News - New Shirt!
Posted by News Fetcher on July 31 '15 at 01:31 PM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
Dabe has delivered a new shirt design that I find hits a bit too close to home.

I remember very vividly when I broke my Pokemon card game addiction. I was free and clear until my son Gabe got hooked. Now I’m right back in!

By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
I have three pieces of PAX related news to share with you.

1. If you are attending PAX Dev and you would like to know when all the cool stuff that is happening there is happening then check out this schedule.

2. The Dates for PAX South are January 29,30,31.

3. We are “planning” on launching ticket sales for PAX South on September 16th 2015.

4. I hate when I’m trying to get to the World’s Grave but I get turned around at the Circle of Bones and I end up in the Skull Orchard. One of those places is not actually in Destiny.

News - Nightlight and my Dad
Posted by News Fetcher on July 31 '15 at 11:02 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
Nightlight is wrapped up now and for those who have no idea what’s going on, I posted a breakdown in the forum.

When my Dad and I were at the Child’s Play golf tournament he saw me have a conversation with Kiko and Dabe about Nightlight. It was before I left for my vacation and I was really struggling to figure out what the monsters in this world would be like. The three of us were bouncing around ideas and my Dad just sat there and listened. We talked about the particular child’s fears informing each monster design. Dabe had the idea of getting real kids to draw monsters and then using those as reference. We talked about the color pallette and what the color choices should mean. When my Dad and I got back in the car he told me that he thought our conversation had been really interesting to listen to. We were talking about “make believe” stuff but we were doing it very seriously. He had never really seen anything like that.

My Dad worked for the Sears service department for pretty much his entire working life. By the time he retired he was managing multiple service centers all over the northwest and Alaska. He went to an office every day and they fixed things. People brought them their broken shit and my Dad (or eventually the people who worked for my Dad) fixed it and gave it back. In contrast I spend my days playing in imaginary worlds. I work very very hard on things that I think for most of his life he would have called a waste of time.

News - Grace, Part Six
Posted by News Fetcher on July 30 '15 at 11:15 PM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
Grace, Part Six can be found here.

I knew David Edery when he worked at Microsoft, what seems like a thousand years ago, under circumstances you will absorb here in a moment. I think he was more or less driven insane by it. Now he works at Spry Fox with an incredibly small crew, making all kinds of weird shit and getting incredibly bad business advice from ME. I think he does what I do for Mike, which is to say, his primary goal over there is to help other people do what they do best, and it would be hard to put an exact label on it.
Hey, thank you for authorizing On The Rain-Slick Precipice Of Darkness a thousand years ago on Xbox 360. Making games was terrifying, but it was a weird kind of terrifying that I would do again in a heartbeat. I don’t know. Maybe it’s like a runner’s high. My experience had this profound component of trying to outrun a ghostly assailant.

We’ve spoken at length over many, many empty glasses about the fortunes of Spry Fox - you guys have made a lot of games, and we end up talking before each one comes out like “maybe this will be the one” that will blow up and give you some room to do really crazy shit you want to do. But crazy shit is what you guys like best - these angular, intimidating games - and aggressively “monetizing mobile” is something that gives you the hives. It should be said, I love this about your games. I’m always giving you bad advice about what constitutes legibility in design and gameplay. What is it like to make games that designers love, and praise, but the wider audience struggles with? Does that mean you’re close to break-out success, or far away?

News - POOPING IS LOGICAL!
Posted by News Fetcher on July 30 '15 at 09:31 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
For some reason I have a bunch of writer friends. In fact now that I think about it, I probably know more writers than I do visual artists. I like writers because they always get very excited when they see drawings based on their stories. Taking the ideas they have in their heads and turning them into pictures is like a magic trick to many writers. Maybe that’s why I like them so much. When I hang out with writers I’m the best artist in the room!

Gary Whitta is one of these writer friends and a few months ago he came to me with an idea. He wanted to make a book for geek parents and their kids called Pooping is Logical. He asked if I’d help him out with some drawings. A potty-training book based on the tenets of Vulcan philosophy? Hell yeah I was interested!

Getting the Star Trek license is tricky though and Gary needs some help convincing the folks in charge that Pooping is Logical is a fun idea. Head over to his page for more details on the project and see what he has to say about getting the word out.

Here’s some of the sketches I did when I was working on the cover:

News - Grace, Part Five
Posted by News Fetcher on July 28 '15 at 11:15 PM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
Grace, Part Five can be found here.

Erik Wolpaw, from Old Man Murray to Portal and Portal 2, you must certainly be considered the world’s foremost writer of gaming humor - both inside and outside games themselves. And your last name is just pronounced regular old Wolpaw, which is way easier to pronounce than Chmielarz. It’s a much more considerate name. But, back to the other thing: why is the best in the Goddamn business writing Team Fortress comics exclusively, and only those, forever?

Jesus, Jerry, you’re making it sound like I don’t do anything at work. I doubt Gabe Newell reads your (stupid) website, but somebody might tell him about your website and say “you better read this website,” and the first article he’d read is all about Wolpaw not doing any work at work. So to answer your question: I am doing a lot of work. I come in every day and think about how I can add value to Valve and its customers. I don’t always just think about it, either. My writing partner Jay Pinkerton and I are writing a novel. Don’t believe me? Well, I guess I’m screwed then oh no wait how do you explain this:

News - Automata Kickstarter!
Posted by News Fetcher on July 28 '15 at 09:15 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
Our Automata Kickstarter is just about funded and we have just posted a new update over on the site. We’ve added another pin design as an optional ADD-ON. Here’s the design:

This is going to a be a really slick pin. We’re gonna do it in two layers so that Carl’s mask sits on top of his face. Similar to the 15 year anniversary pin.

Thanks so much for your support of this Kickstarter. We’ve just got a little bit more to go!

News - PAX Australia!
Posted by News Fetcher on July 27 '15 at 09:32 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
This Friday is the last day to get the early bird discount on your PAX Aus tickets. Three day badges are 100% sold out now but you can still pick up individual day badges. I’ve flown to Australia twice now and I have to say, 20 hours in the air is not my favorite thing in the world. With that said, I absolutely love Melbourne. If you have any tips for making the flight more humane I’d love to hear them. Right now I pass the time by alternating between trying unsuccessfully to sleep and watching movies I didn’t want to watch when they were in theaters.

News - Monday Sketchdump!
Posted by News Fetcher on July 27 '15 at 09:16 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
I’m back from almost two weeks of vacation and I feel great. we spent a few days camping here in Washington and then drove over to Idaho and spent another week at a lake cabin in Coeur D’Alene. I drew the first three Nightlight strips before I left but left the fourth for when I got home. I was struggling with the fourth comic because I wasn’t sure what I wanted the monsters in this world to look like. I knew I wanted them to come in all shapes and sizes but I was looking for some theme to tie them all together. When I left for my vacation I had no clue what that theme would be.

Our cabin in Coeur D’Alene had a little dock behind it and the kids loved jumping off it and swimming in the lake. I was sitting on the edge of the dock one day fishing while the kids swam around. I ended up pulling a fish right out from under the dock. I explained that the fish like to hide under the dock and the kids got a little spooked. All of a sudden they were wondering what lived in the darkness under this dock. Then I started to think…beds are kind of like docks. I ran inside and grabbed my sketchbook.

The monsters I started doodling had scales and gills. We caught a catfish that night and the boys thought it was the most disgusting thing they’d ever seen. We pulled out something with sharp fins like thorns on its back. Everything we reeled in just gave me more ideas. I decided the shadows under the bed were like dark, still water and I let that inform my monster designs.

News - Grace, Part Four
Posted by News Fetcher on July 26 '15 at 11:15 PM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
Grace, Part 4 can be found here.

I don’t KNOW know Adrian Chmielarz, partly because he lives super far away in Poland. I’ve just played his games - mainly Painkiller, Bulletstorm, and The Vanishing of Ethan Carter - and liked all three of them. The last one there - the Vanishing one - just came out on PS4. But you already beat it when came out on PC months ago, like a cool person. Right? Here we go.
Adrian, before we continue, I have always wanted to know how to pronounce Chmielarz. I’m going to write out how I think it would sound, just so you can laugh at me: Cha-mee-larz. I assume that’s incorrect.

Yes, that’s incorrect ;) Do this:

1. Go to https://translate.google.pl/#en/pl/Chmielarz

2. (Right side translation should be set to Polish)

3. Click on the speaker icon to listen to the voice.

4. (Should be something like Hmye-lash)

5. (Yes it’s weird, but in Polish “Ch” and “H” are the same)

I don’t know if it’s still traumatic to talk about, but can we talk about Bulletstorm? I’ll go, and then you. Bulletstorm is one of my favorite games of all time, and one of the reasons I still have a 360 plugged in is just in case I want to play Bulletstorm. I feel like I’m the only one who understands this game. I want to call out the Anarchy multiplayer in particular, as there’s simply nothing else like it. Years later, I still think about it. I try to get people to plug their own 360s back in. I offer to buy them a copy. It’s like that.

News - Nightlight Art
Posted by News Fetcher on July 24 '15 at 08:15 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
I’m pushing myself with this Nightlight story and I’m really proud of how it’s turning out. I really wanted thyis family to feel real and so I’m packing in lots of little details. Some of them are things you can catch if you look closely but others are more personal.

This panel from the first comic for example is favorite of mine because it’s right out of my life. The way Grace’s Mom pulls her into that little side hug is something I see Kara do with Gabe all the time while she is cooking. It’s a little moment from my life that I gave this family. I also love the Dad’s studio door. He let the kids paint on it and you can see at the bottom it’s just a mess. As the kids grow up you see shapes and stick figures. Then some hand prints and I like to think the hearts are from his wife. The blue hand print belongs to the Dad. It’s just a door but I think it tells a little story about this family. I won’t call out any of the other little secrets but I’ve checked the form and I can see that folks are finding some of them.

Click on any of these for a large version.

News - Grace, Part Three
Posted by News Fetcher on July 23 '15 at 11:15 PM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
Just as it says on the tin, it’s Grace: Part Three. It’s not the sequel! It’s the threequil? Treequil? Triquil. It’s the third one.

I wrote all this a couple weeks ago, and I usually don’t really remember things after I write them: that’s the whole reason I wrote them down. If someone tells me the morning a strip goes up that they liked a comic, I have to look it up, or say, “Thank you very much; I am, as ever, your servant. Which strip was that again?” There isn’t room to keep them.

But I remember all this stuff. In fact, I very specifically remember today’s comic. Not just because of the obvious reasons you might remember it, but because it very nearly didn’t look like this. It used to just be the bottom three panels. And maybe I’m telling too much, here, but here is the text message Kiko sent when he saw what Gabe had done:

So you have to understand that Groob has a very special relationship with Kiko, one that extends into realms I have no access to. Not that realm, but you’re welcome to mentally embroider that scenario on your own time. He uses Kiko like a dowsing rod, which doesn’t really move things in a less erotic direction. But Kiko’s eye is invaluable to him, and Keek delivers penetrating (God dammit!) insights with unmatched word economy. The only other person he trusts like that is Katie Rice, from Camp Weedonwantcha. Now, get a load of Gabe’s response:
