News - The Sticky-Out Part Of A Boat
Posted by News Fetcher on June 19 '15 at 09:01 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
I felt bad. Usually, Microsoft brings Rare up it’s to show something that I don’t want. There’s always a sinister aspect to it; a Winston Smith aspect, as they’re forced to tell us the Kinect is great a second time. I am not in the market for a collection of old games from them, I can barely play the new games I’m obsessed with. And then they showed Sea of Thieves, and I felt like an asshole.

Watching a trailer like this has an element of divination, of course. But even the things we know for certain are thoroughly welcome. They keep making new Assassin’s Creed Games in different eras when what everyone I know wants is to crew multiplayer pirate ships. It happens - Guns of Icarus, of course, and I would say Puzzle Pirates - but it is vanishingly rare. I’m getting a strong survival game vibe, with the addition of yo ho ho and and a pronounced booty suffix. Divination, right? Haruspicy. But that’s what a good trailer with a good idea makes you do. My great fear is that they will offer DLC prows and I will be made a pauper.

I have a bunch of habits, built over years, that form my interactions with hardware. They aren’t always sensible; they have that thoroughly organic seeking and grasping quality, like a pea vine. “I watch video on the Xbox,” was one of them. Even if I’m not playing on the Xbox, I used to switch machines to use Netflix or whatever because I “watch video on the Xbox.” When I started spending as much time with the PS4 as I did, I knew this was incredibly bad news for the other machine. When that rule ceased to be currency, the Xbox stayed off. It divorced me almost completely from the ecosystem.

News - Brief Destiny Comics Suffix
Posted by News Fetcher on June 17 '15 at 01:30 PM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
With the original comic we did, correctly entitled “Fan Fiction,” I only polished up what Gabriel had written. What I call polishing up might not be what you call polishing up. I would never say what I wrote and what he did, because it would diminish the honor which should rightly accrue to him. It wouldn’t exist at all if he hadn’t been the crazypants Destiny addict that he is; I just wanted to help. When I wrote the new ones, I did it for him.

I am still a very new fan, but the Grimoire cards are the main way I hook into the game and I made them my psychic diet. My primary goal was to make people feel like their class is cool. But I also wanted to poke around in the lore and see if there was anything I could put in that would stick. Like Master Rahool palming your engrams, let’s say. Or - and this might be my favorite - that a Titan, even in that armor, gets the shit kicked out of them in there. You take off the armor and it’s like you were in a bar fight. It was a tremendous pleasure to write these and I hope they are of use to you when you’re playing.

By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
What was Black Tusk and is now The Coalition has a mandate to return Gears of War to its horror roots, which I’m okay with; something was definitely lost there. Horror games have a tendency to become Action Games once numbers start getting bolted to the end of the title. Part of the reason is that horror is a niche. Horror is also hard. It may even be at conceptual variance with the core interaction of a shooter, which tends to coalesce around shooting. They’re also hard to write. Lots of reasons to focus on the gun and not the person holding it. Totally get it. Still.

The demo of Gears of War 4 was, in my opinion, the only off note in the Microsoft press thing. That’s not an indicator of a bad product or anything like that, there’s no way to know. I’m saying that was a bad part to show and the whole thing just needs to bake. Gears is, like Warmachine or Doctor Who, one of my things. This means that I extend it some sympathy, because it does something uncommon, something I can’t get elsewhere. Even then, with an optimal audience, I couldn’t find much to hold onto.
I’m grabbing the Beta for the Remaster though, believe it. My code for the beta arrived while I was typing the previous paragraph, so… I had to put it in. Actually, that was the second of two codes; the first let me have a game I couldn’t play, and the second authorized me to play a game I might not even have installed. They are like the two keys you might turn to annihilate a distant nation.

News - New DLC Podcast Show
Posted by News Fetcher on June 17 '15 at 09:30 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
Today is Wednesday so here is your new DLC Podcast Show.

I’m still not 100% comfortable drawing with the camera on but I think the result is pretty cool. I like that you all can see the comic strip come together visually while you listen to us write it. I think it’s a really cool format and I’m sure eventually I’ll forget the camera is even on. I remember the podcasts were difficult at first as well. Trying to have a normal conversation while you’re being recorded is tricky. Now I don’t even notice the microphone. Anyway, check out the new format and don’t forget Club PA members get this show and the First 15 two weeks early.

News - New Destiny Comics!
Posted by News Fetcher on June 15 '15 at 07:00 PM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
So it turns out some of the folks over at Bungie were fans of the Destiny Fan Fiction comic I did a while back. They reached out a few months ago and asked if Tycho and I would like to work with them on something. This was just before House of Wolves was scheduled to drop and I thought maybe they wanted some comics focusing on the expansion. That wasn’t the case though. What they showed us when we visited their studio was the Taken King. They let us play with the three new subclasses and then asked us if we wanted to create a comic (similar to the fan fiction piece) about each one.

As I am sure you can imagine, that sounded pretty rad to us.

Sunbreaker

Nightstalker

Stormcaller

It’s no secret I love Destiny. The chance to do a series of official comics set in that world was just too good to pass up. Tycho and I cooked up what we think are a set of cool introductions to these new Subclasses and you can see them over on the Bungie site. I had a lot of fun drawing these and I’m super proud of them. I know I missed posting two sketchdumps in a row but that’s because all the stuff I was sketching was secret and I couldn’t exactly show it off. So here’s a look at a bunch of my doodles from the entire project.

By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
I was once on the Time 100, alongside Taylor Swift, but I’m still just me and now she’s TAYLOR SWIFT in all caps, diamond-hard global goddess. When she was playing her guitar at the event, suggesting into the microphone that a song was “just poetry put to music,” I said, “You know what, this kid’s alright.” It’s much the same here. I think learning to yield, in the Tai Chi sense, is the only medicine for something like this. I have been given many opportunities to observe my annihilation, many remote cameras are cataloging the process. Soon, I will just be a bleached femur a few hyenas are listlessly fighting over.

I can hear a violin.
Watching the Xbox press thing was a very interesting experience. If Microsoft ever had a device called the Kinect, if it had ever been bundled directly with the platform, if it had ever been considered an inextricable piece of hardware, you couldn’t know that from the presentation today. I never hated it as much as my cohort, always hoped it would have some appropriate slash not shoehorned scenario - Kinect plus Oculus seems like the most obvious one. I’m not even sure it’s a thing anymore. I’m going to look under my television when I get home, just to see if I made the whole thing up.
It was strong, though. The only down note was the Gears of War reveal, because it’s Gears of War 4, and they didn’t have a treatment of the logo that said “Gears of Four.” For real. It’s like, these fuckin’ guys. Get with the Goddamn program.

News - New First 15
Posted by News Fetcher on June 15 '15 at 08:30 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
It’s Monday and that means there is a new First 15. In this one Tycho and I take a crack at a co-op puzzle game called Kalimba.

This game was hard as hell but very cool. As someone in the comments pointed out, I think the hardest part of Kalimba might be finding someone to play Kalimba with.

News - The Possibilities
Posted by News Fetcher on June 12 '15 at 10:00 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
It turns out that running a press conference for a virtual reality thing is very hard when you can’t actually communicate what makes it special in a normal video. It’s similar to a few E3s ago, when the Playstation 3 was poised to herald an era of 3D. I can’t remember: did that end up happening? It seems like it didn’t end up happening. But the problem was the same: it would be like trying to tell someone about what it’s like to be drunk, and then showing pictures of drunk people. It’s incoherent.

I knew they were in trouble when they kept showing pictures of the same dinosaur from different angles, and saying, “Fucking imagine how scary this dinosaur would be if it were real. If it were a real dinosaur, right, and you were there. It’s just you and this giant dinosaur, and you’re like, fuckin’, get out of here man!!!” It don’t work, fellas. I understand that you have to do stuff like this, even if it doesn’t work. I feel bad for you. Not ironically, but for real. It sucks.
Still interesting though, and still worth watching.

News - Balmy Ballads
Posted by News Fetcher on June 10 '15 at 10:49 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
I use Spotify for the same reason people used to use Xbox Live; their friends had it. Right? How much multiplayer do you want to play, and how much of that would you like to consists of you being ground into a powder by abusive strangers? It doesn’t describe a truly authentic choice. Likewise, if I want to make sure I’m hearing a sufficient quota of weird-ass shit from the people I know, Spotify trivializes the “here is my playlist” process. Then I can split this playlist from the bottom to the top and throw out the garbage.

There’s very little music that falls into that category for me, though. I have whatever the musical version of pica is. I have to stuff it all deep in my craw-zone. I’m always afraid, in any cultural context, that I’m missing this or that vital nutrient. The nutrient in question may not exist. Indeed, it might actually be poison. Only one way to find out, bottoms up, etc.
I wish I hadn’t gotten out of this practice of exposure; then again, I’m already keeping tight tabs on one exploding medium, and carrying PAX from nation to nation like a reliquary and trying to establish what will one day be The Old Ways. I used to decry the explosion of genres, and they haven’t stopped expanding, but I think we actually need this technology. We need crabcore. Well, maybe we don’t need crabcore. But you know what I mean.
I can’t say that I one hundred percent know what the difference between “Metal Mutilation” and “Deep-Bore Anal Metal” might be, but, you know. The Spotify havem the musics on there. I can push the play and then the musics can to be hearing them.

News - Legendary

By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
We decided that we had to commemorate this bizarre crew somehow, and what better way to do it than to publicly shame my lack of everything that is required for valor. See if you can recognize any of the members of my incredibly high profile squad. The upper left and lower right are, in the manner of Bingo, free squares.

The reality is that there are only two raids for Destiny, which makes my ignorance in this matter even more shameful; that said, there are definitely some tricks you had better learn for some of these scenarios that don’t map to some of the standard raid “dances.” Monday night is the night we get together to do stuff like this, at varying degrees of sobriety, and there’s a jumping puzzle in Vault of Glass that is essentially a test of the “you are too fucked up to ride this ride” variety. Those who manage to get over to the other side can spend as many as ten minutes watching their fellows fall fast into an infinitely deep hole. It is the polar opposite of watching fireworks.
It’s been fun to put up our video stuff and watch people react to it. We’ve been filming forever basically, just messing around, so we have a lot of weird stuff piled up; Josh’s office looks like the kitchens they show on Hoarder type shows. Whatever the video equivalent of forty cans half filled with various unknown greases would be is what he have here. Apparently Dabe knows how to do animated titles for shit; he’s made my captured writhings seem very professional, somehow.

By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
On Friday we launched a bunch of new shows on our YouTube channel and laid out a new schedule. Today is Monday which means there is a new First 15 available. This time Tycho and I sit down and play some Motorcycle club. Check it out!

I’ve seen some discussion about the First 15 show being edited down. There’s been some discussion about that here at PA as well as we try and figure out the best way to do all this stuff. Personally I’d rather play fifteen minutes of a game and then just give you the good stuff. I feel like watching us navigate menus or just sit there silently is boring. I’d rather just give you the jokes but I understand some folks want to see the entire thing, warts and all. All I can say is that all these shows are just getting started and we’ll be listening to what you guys tell us and adjusting them as needed.

We uploaded a bunch of stuff on Friday but this is our first real week of new shows. We’ll drop a new DLC Podcast show on Wednesday and then one of our let’s play style shows on Friday. Don’t forget Club PA members get the First 15 and the DLC Show 2 weeks early.
