Thornwatch Update!

By Gabe@penny-arcade.com (Gabe) from Penny Arcade:
Making a tabletop game is a lot of work you guys. Thankfully I am surrounded by some ridiculously talented folks at Lone Shark and Penny Arcade. Kiko has been working on finalizing the layout for our cards and they are looking really cool. For a long time our cards have gotten the job done, but now it’s time to turn this stuff: Into something I’m proud to put in a box. Here’s a sneak peek at some of the work Kiko has been doing: While Kiko hammers out the graphic design I still have lots to illustrate. Specifically I am working on our Judges right now. If you’ve…

I was very, very late to the game on Destiny. As someone whose primary axis of engagement with Bungie was via their lore, please act surprised, Destiny as a launch experience was missing the nanoscale furrows that would give me entre. Or, it sort of was. Things definitely happen in the game, but they occur in a kind of dream logic which might have been caused by any number of things. As the anchor for a “ten year game,” you don’t really want to paint yourself into a corner too early. There was also significant creative turmoil at the time that caused…

Chirurgery

I haven’t had a chance to play The Surge yet, so I don’t 100% know what’s going on with it. Gabriel doesn’t seem to like it, so I assume that means it’s great. Being like Dark Souls without being Dark Souls is, to my mind, an argument for whatever it is. Bloodborne, made by the same fucking crew, proves it better than anybody: there’s a hard, shiny marble at the center of this loop and narrative experience that is a basecamp for other expressions of it. Nioh proves out some concepts related to ARPG loot grinds and technical gameplay that I…

The Surge!
Posted by News Fetcher on May 22 '17 at 09:31 AM
By Gabe@penny-arcade.com (Gabe) from Penny Arcade:
I picked up The Surge not really knowing what to expect. I heard it had some cool combat mechanics and figured it was worth a try. It only took a few minutes of playing to realize it was Bloodborne but you can chop off body parts. Honestly that probably would have been enough for me if it didn’t look so stupid. Bloodborne is a game that oozes character and style and I think that’s why I was able to get so into it. On the other hand, The Surge reminds me of and 80’s cartoon. I am serious! Here’s the main guy from The Surge. I think his name is Bob Surge. And here are the…

Right Round

By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
Something I’ve never been able to understand is how you could forget what it’s like to be young. I haven’t, but I have a weird memory where if I remember something I experience it and generally shudder or make a sound. God only knows; maybe not forgetting it is itself evidence of some spiritual malnourishment. It could also be empathy! That’s another thing it could be. The types of content I’ve seen produced about Fidget Spinners, ranging from them being representations of Illuminati tampering with the youth to existential treatises on the…

Coda

By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
Of course, we’re only goofing around with Pat Rothfuss, who is also Viari. We are inveterate goofers. I have every faith that the book will come out and what’s more that it will be really good. He should make a deal with me that he’ll release his book when I release mine; that would provide the necessary impetus. The web-borne pressure would build up behind my mind, and the book would be launched like a cannonball. I found the television show for Game of Thrones vastly more enjoyable than the books, past the first one at least, which I…

Supply And Demand
Posted by News Fetcher on May 15 '17 at 10:53 AM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
We read a fascinating article on Krontiqi called “I Paid Women To Play Overwatch With Me, And It Was Fantastic” and that headline is so robust that I don’t feel any compulsion to explain it. I don’t know. I feel like this sort of thing would attract fucking weirdos and I am scared by proxy. I already know I exact a profound cost from those who spend time with me; if I could enumerate it thus, with an actual dollar amount, I would feel even worse about it than I already do. We wanted to try some D&D at home, I have a cool D&D enabling table that…

Metagame

By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
Oh, man. We’ve got it super bad for Has Been heroes, both of us now. What’s weird is that I told him specifically, “Hey, this is a mechanic I think you’ll find interesting, but please do not take this as a recommendation.” He was playing it when I came in the next morning, and he was in the part of the game where you are hitting your head against it so hard, so very hard, and you are wondering why you would hit your head against it even one more time, when suddenly a crack appears. We’re gonna play it on the stream today at 3:30pm…

Skin In The Game
Posted by News Fetcher on May 10 '17 at 12:01 PM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
Gabe and Kara entered the Skin Mines to… actually, let me generate another metaphor. I don’t want the mental image of a “Skin Mine” sloshing around in my skull-zone. Gabe and Kara undertook the necessary rituals to get the Officer D.Va skin, enduring long. I like everything about Heroes of the Storm except actually playing it. It’s incredibly beautiful; I’ve executed the program just to look at skins. I think of it like a nice shelf which contains a collection. I really enjoyed Cho’gall conceptually and liked that this…

New Things Are Bad

By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
Once you have been alive long enough, you begin to see the superstructure. Everyone is trying to build the board from Mouse Trap but nobody has the instructions. This is true as a figurative, but also as a literal. There might be pieces missing but nobody knows for sure. People older than you are always saying that they built it just fine, they didn’t have any problems, but it’s impossible to believe them because you can just look around and see they didn’t know fuck about shit. My cadre were supposedly “bleak, cynical, and disaffected,” which…

The Re-Riser
Posted by News Fetcher on May 05 '17 at 11:51 AM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
It sort of goes back to the podcast for this week, entitled “Medley.” For me, games are novel models of phenomena, keyhole glimpses into a manifold and incomprehensible reality. For my longtime friend and ally Gurpy Grops, videogames are a visual medium, a novel way to experience art. I start at the abstract and work down, he does the opposite. In truth, I need never get to to the art. He need never get to the underlying system (although if we’re maintaining the previous metaphor, it is an “overarching” system). It is very strange to…
