New Strip Search

Contracts. yuck.

It’s no secret that Tycho and I have a bad history when it comes to contracts. The most famous one is probably when we thought we were signing a deal with a company called EFront for hosting and advertising, but actually signed away all the rights to the comic strip. We also lost our book rights after signing an especially bad contract. We spent a lot of time and a lot of money getting ourselves out of those deals and now we have Robert our personal business asshole to make sure we never do it again.

The reality is that there are a lot of people who are more than happy to take advantage of artists and you need to be on your guard. This challenge had some funny moments in it and we tried to make it entertaining but it’s actually a super important lesson. I wish we had learned it when we were just starting out.

The Law Of The Jungle

By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
My co-conspirator suggested that he had been up until midnight playing videogames, the way a young person might do, which was amusing to me because we were independently engaged in a similar (if not identical) enterprise.

It turns out that the perfect antidote to content-free angst regarding the precise dimensions of a next-generation console’s “rights shredder” peripheral is to play actual games on devices which are out and available. I know! Perhaps they’ll describe the precise contours of their dystopia at E3: the origin of the nutritive fluids we’ll absorb, or what will happen to those whose bodies reject the IMPERATOR implant. It might even be the same thing! But I’m finished for the time being with the void-worship, scrying pool ultrapopulism. That’s time I could be investing in banana acquisition.
As a very young boy, I had an Odyssey², an early American console that had a keyboard for some reason, which is why I suspect my mother tolerated such a thing in the house: it had, somewhere within itself, the possiblity of education. I had a Commodore, then an Amiga, so the consoles my friends owned were interesting but not a source of any true envy. I had Warlords II, for fuck’s sake. It’s like… man, get out of here.

Gabeart
Posted by News Fetcher on May 30 '13 at 09:00 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
Thursday is new Gabeart day. Watch me draw last Thursday’s comic strip:

You can see I had a really hard time with the third panel. Struggling with a drawing is one thing but doing it while a camera is watching is a bit more stressful. I think it’s interesting though and it let’s you see just how anal I am about expressions. You can’t see it in the video but behind the camera I’m acting out the comic and saying the lines over and over again trying to figure out the right face. Eventually I nailed it though and I got a lot of great compliments on that strip specifically calling out the third panel. So that made me feel pretty damn good.

In other art related news, here’s my sketch and the raw inks from the new Daughters art I posted yesterday.

DLC Update
Posted by News Fetcher on May 29 '13 at 11:45 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
We are nearing the finish line with our DLC podcast Kickstarter and we’ve added one final stretch goal to the mix. If we manage to crack the 200k mark we will deliver a podcast for a game session of Lost Lands. That’s right the tabletop RPG created by my 8yo son. He will GM a game for me and a few of my friends and we will record the entire thing for you.

I’ve played Lost Lands a few times now and it’s great. It’s goofy and ridiculous but also surprisingly cool in a few ways. That’s not just me being a Dad either. He ran his game for Scott a few weeks ago and after hearing the basic mechanics Scott turned to me and said “wow I might actually use that idea in my game.” It’s pretty amazing what kids can come up with when they don’t know what they are “supposed” to do. Needless to say I am incredibly proud.

The update to the Kickstarter includes a few other bits of info including the image for the poster that backers will receive.

Thanks to everyone who has supported us via the Kickstarter. It’s because of you guys that we can keep making stuff.

By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
LEAGUE JUDGMENT: MARSHFELLOW, THE SWEET PRINCE

Candidate: Marshfellow Ser Pufflin
Date: 33 March, 24 CLE

OBSERVATION

As a mount, clouds make for slow travel. A cloudling, even slower. And Cirrus was a cloudling with ADHD. You do the math.
Every minute it seemed there was a fascinating lichen, or a new plant, or a rock - a fucking rock - that necessitated intense concentration until such time as it was forgotten absolutely in search of the next wholly useless stimuli. This is how Marshfellow Ser Pufflin came to arrive at the Institute of War almost twenty years after his departure from the Moistlands.
He thought of this as he thoughtfully knotted the cloudling’s mist-reins on the mountrod.
“Stay here, Cirrus,” His Deliciousness warbled, like a penguin encased in gelatin. “Where I go, I go alone.”

REFLECTION

Steel. And heat. And hot, white blood.

He felt himself squozen through the twin fallopias, pressure beyond measure, as his consciousness fired into the mold. It gave him eyes, to witness his making. It gave him arms, to gouge out the eyes. It gave him a mouth, to catalogue every moment of his terror.

In the midst of these horrors, a tiny cloud bobbed. The cloud was looking at nothing in particular, as hard as it could.
“Cirrus, for Fuck’s sake!” cried His Expansiveness. “I told you stay out-fucking-side!”

“You’re a marshmallow, man,” said Cirrus. “I mean, you’re a marshmallow-man.”
“That’s a machine that makes marshmallows, and it made you, and now you’re a marshmallow man. This is the least complicated, least majestic origin imaginable. You came out of a machine that makes an infinite number of dudes exactly like you. That’s what’s up.”

Overwatch

By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
I understood why you couldn’t turn an Xbox 360 off with voice - that made sense, particularly when the Goddamn thing decides it heard something nobody in the room actually said. I didn’t really understand why you shouldn’t be able to turn it on with voice, though, other than it not being possible with that hardware. The Xbox One can do it, which is nice I guess, though it does mean it has to be listening absolutely all the time, because… that’s how. It’s not clear whether or not it will judge you at launch, but if the previous system is any indicator, they’re always prepared to add functionality.
If you were to have this conversation with someone from Microsoft, say, Aaron Greenberg, they probably wouldn’t understand what you were talking about when you used terms like “privacy concerns” or whatever. He would ask you why you ever turned it off in the first place.

Ben beat me to it, “it” being discussing the alien realm we’re entering vis a vis “Used Digital Gamez(?!?),” but even then I can’t just let it sit.

Strip Search!
Posted by News Fetcher on May 24 '13 at 09:00 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
I have never laughed this hard at an elimination comic strip.

Fun behind the scenes fact:

It took me something like two dozen takes to tell Abby that Katie thought her hair smelled like shit. We decided to stop even pretending to suggest why the artists were there and just make shit up. I don’t know if it’s just because I was so tired after all the days of filming or what but I could not say it without laughing. So there’s something to look forward to on the DVD.

It was an incredible elimination. Be sure and share your thoughts in the comments or using the #stripsearch tag on Twitter.

Monaco Prints
Posted by News Fetcher on May 24 '13 at 08:30 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
If you’re not playing Monaco you should be. You can grab it for the PC or XBL and it’s awesome no matter where you play it.

It’s an Ocean’s 11 style heist game that has you building a four person team from a selection of eight awesome archetypes. You can play as characters like the Locksmith, the Hacker or the Red Head. Each character has special abilities that you’ll need in order to pull off the games many capers. The game is a blast and a big part of it for me at least are the beautiful retro graphics. Each of the eight characters is represented by a simple little sprite figure of a specific color.

As soon as I started playing I wanted to take those sprites and turn them into full blown cartoon characters.

It started off as a fun little art challenge that I was just doing for myself. Going off nothing but how they behaved in game and what was communicated via the sprites I tried to imagine what each character really looked like. As soon as I had done two of them I knew that I had to do the entire set.

I posted them on Twitter and a few people asked about buying prints of the designs. They aren’t our characters though and so we we reached out to Andy Schatz the creator of Monaco and asked if we could make them and then send him money. He was cool with that.

They’re all done, and they look great. If you’ve enjoyed seeing my associate’s take on the individual characters, high quality prints are available either as a set, or individually. Kiko’s new “Scorestreak” shirt just came back from our shirt printer, and we have it for the ladies and also for manz.

Child’s Play Tournament Results
Posted by News Fetcher on May 22 '13 at 02:45 PM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
So before the tournament we let everyone place side bets on who among the PA staff would have the best score. All the money went right to Child’s Play and those who backed the right horse so to speak would get their names posted on the site. Well I am sad to say that Robert Khoo and his team took the honors with a score of -4. My team played hard but we only managed a -1. So here are the names of Robert’s supporters:

Amber Armstrong

Ben Wallis

Brandi Murphy

David Hanson

Dwayne McDonald

eric lee

Jacob Rogers

Jon Bankard

Jonathan Serna

Jordan Parker

Kevin Dent

Kyle Lichtenberg

Liam Hesketh-Jost

Matthew Dannevik

Paul Ference

Richard Amtower

Ryan Furlong

Thomas Barbour

Trevin Forkert

Wil Shipley

Xavier Velasquez

A score of four under par is pretty good and it was enough to beat me, but it didn’t come close to winning the tournament. Here are the real winners from Monday’s game:

1st Place with a score of 62:

EricKnapp

DavidMann

JJRichards

DanElenbaas

2nd Place with a score of 64:

GeneChoi

DavidHanson

AaronMcDonald

BrianKostol

3rd Place with a score of 67:

AlexBenson

EdBolt

JamesGillooly

PhilippeOnetto

Longest Drive: Brian Kostol, 340 yards

Closest to Pin: Gene Choi, 5’5”

Thank you very much to everyone who supported us with the side bet donations and everyone who came out and played. We had an awesome day and together we raised just over 30,000.00 for Child’s Play! Now I call that…a hole in one.

By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
With Gabriel’s adoption of the Surface Pro (and thus, a gaming capable PC) as a lifestyle totem, we have penetrated so far into weirdo territory that I will hear beepboops of unknown provenance over there and wonder where they’re from. We played Sanctum back in “the day,” liked it, and then interred it for some reason I don’t entirely recall. I knew the sequel was coming out, and I was gonna say we should play it, but he beat me to it. Get your head around that shit.
We haven’t been able to play it for the last couple days because of the Child’s Play Invitational and the Xbox Thing, but man oh man. I like Tower Defense games that are also Action Games, of which I find Orcs Must Die 2 to manifest the gold standard. We’ll see where this goes, though: Sanctum 2 offers up to four players and an interesting progression mechanic, so I think there’s a lot left here for us to find.
As regards the Xbox Unveilination, Gabriel has described it as “a massive fuckup.” He did that just now, a few seconds ago, and I was surprised to learn upon leaving the event yesterday that most people appear to agree.
I expected to languish there during an extended treatise on how mothafuckas are gonna be watching teevee in the future, when the TV stuff was more interesting than almost anything else. It’s the kind of daily use technology that isn’t sexy to most people. It’s why I’ll sift a hundred shots until I find the one with a clear picture of the current UI. I am a fetishist; I’m into kinky shit like “prices” and what I perceive to be “live game footage” and “implementation.” I strongly suspect that Galabriel is allergic to the Kinect, you can’t make him use it. But they want to. So, there’s that.

MS stuff
Posted by News Fetcher on May 22 '13 at 10:30 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
I was at the Xbox One reveal yesterday morning and overall I found it pretty disappointing. I feel like I wasn’t the target demographic for the presentation. I like to watch TV but what I like more is playing video games. I don’t care about sports games and EA has taught me over the years not to believe any of their pre-release bullshot videos. I also hate the Kinect. Every time I try to use it for playing a game or navigating the Xbox, the result is unreliable and frustrating. I like Call of Duty but their high resolution, motion captured dog and hyper intelligent fish didn’t get me too excited. The box itself looks cool in a retro sort of way and I dig the new controller but I need to see some games. I guess that will have to wait until E3.

There is a Microsoft product that I do love though and that’s my Surface Pro. I use it for drawing comics when I’m not at the office, for playing games, and just as my general purpose computer. You can see in today’s strip I’m playing Sanctum 2 on it and I’m sure some people will think that’s some sort of paid product placement. I want to assure you that’s not something we do here at PA. You can’t actually buy that from us. The best you can do is give us something and hope we like it enough to integrate it into our lives. That’s exactly what happened with the Surface Pro. I’ve had a lot of people ask me what games I play on it and I thought I’d put together a little list.
