The Opposite Of Riches
Posted by News Fetcher on April 08 '11 at 10:15 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
Gabriel just returned from something called a "Great Wolf Lodge," which sounds like a half-way house for troubled young lycanthropes. But it's not! And apparently there are many things there, things both wolven and lodgy, but the big takeaway is apparently MagiQuest which is like if they had RFID at Hogwarts.

If you want to play it correctly, and that's obviously what we should be shooting for as a free people, you can apparently run up a pretty good tab. Correctly in this case means a cloak. For starters.

Dragon Age II is firmly, deeply situated "in the bag" at this point, completion time thirty six hours or so, and the experience has been completely bizarre. As the resident Lore Hound, and indeed, for any person who knows what a Thedas is, there is a substantial quantity of aged narrative beef present. Cultural stuff barely hinted at by Origins' inclusion of Sten takes center stage, bolstered by ecstatic writing (that's ecstatic, definition 2) that has an entire alien culture as its payload.

I don't know how successful the original Dragon Age was, but given its interminable development cycle "success" as humans perceive this phenomenon may not have been possible. I don't think the climate at EA allows for that kind of build anymore, I don't think even BioWare can get away with something like that when it isn't attached to an ongoing payment structure. Something had to give, somewhere, and it's not hard to see where.

Baste Me With Your Corrosive Saliva
Posted by News Fetcher on April 01 '11 at 07:30 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
The dialogue that surrounds Dragon Age 2 is at least as interesting as the dialogue contained within it. It's ongoing, and you can't lose anywhere you plug yourself in, really, unless you're lead DA2 writer David Gaider. How many people does that apply to, though? One or two, at most. Anyway, there are concerns about the game's erotic menu, concerns which are wholly valid.

For example, David Gaider is being called on the carpet for not catering to "straight male gamers," but there is also a petition going around to get him sacked for having the temerity to write gay characters who are interested in sex. You really need to read that first link, there - it's incredible. This is why you don't piss off a writer on the Internet. In a medium defined by text, a writer is the closest analog we have to a sorcerer. But there is really no victory for him, is there? He made an imaginary world, but it either doesn't conform with enough specificity to people's baggage, or it conforms too well.

I've made it pretty clear that I tend to play women in Bioware games - Shepherd is not now, nor has ever been, a man. I don't know who the dude traipsing around in the commercials is; a jerk, most likely. That's why I never picked up on either of the above criticisms, because that whole band of data isn't likely to (for lack of a better word) penetrate. I often don't know what to do with these persistent, unwelcome proclamations of affection from others. And having sex with them would involve taking off my armor, and I don't know if you've played Dragon Age 2, but it's a dragon a minute around here. Place is lousy with fucking dragons.

Awesome Lookouts News!
Posted by News Fetcher on March 30 '11 at 10:00 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
Pretty much since the day it came out people have been begging us for more Lookouts stuff. It is without a doubt the most popular side project we have ever created. Fans have been begging for more comics, toys, and especially a tabletop RPG. Meanwhile Tycho and I have been secretly working behind the scenes to make all this stuff happen.

I am beyond proud to announce that we have partnered with Cryptozoic Entertainment to deliver a deluxe hybrid role playing and board game experience. You and your friends will be able to customize your very own Lookouts characters. You’ll jump into the magical Eyrewood, with all of its challenges, traps, monsters and characters. Each player will gain abilities and skills based on the merit badges they earn, becoming more powerful as they cross difficult terrain, face menacing creatures and encounter other hardships. Tycho and I have played this game and we begged them not to take the prototype back home with them.

Before the game hits, we will be wetting your appetites with even more Lookouts stories though. This fall we will be launching a digital Lookouts comic book! Follow along as the Lookouts go on adventures, learning the ways of the Eyrewood forest and how to live alongside it and then create your own adventures when the game launches early next year!

The Evernight
Posted by News Fetcher on March 28 '11 at 07:45 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
The side of the 3DS box really does have a frightening harangue on it. I would go so far as to say that it stops just shy of being Dark Prophecy, roosting tastefully near Omen. The DS, I may say with clarity, is my Favorite System Of All Time. I'm referring explicitly to gaming appliances, it should be said; the sort of device I would type something like this on isn't in that continuum. Things did not start out that way: I begrudged the ill-starred thing its flip-flop nonsense, did not truck with its shim-sham, refused to hold court with ...

Compare And Contrast

By from Penny Arcade:
We continue to be shocked by the increasingly ridiculous, often ingenious purposes human beings are putting the Kinect sensor toward. I don't understand why this is happening, other than the Internet is rad, and it's put a lot of fascinating, comitted people in contact with one another who have subsequently merged to become Amalgama, she who is The All-God. Too much? You don't have to wait for any other site to link you to what's happening, now, you can just go to Kinect Hacks they way they themselves do and (in effect) peer into the future. I don't just mean ...

One Of Many Possible Responses
Posted by News Fetcher on March 22 '11 at 11:15 PM
By from Penny Arcade:
Duke Nukem is no doubt, and no argument, an organism which is guaranteed (indeed, engineered) to be offensive. So, if we get offended... does he win, somehow? Is that how it works? These days Duke remembered as the game with boobs in it, or is the game about boobs, or is executed by running boobs.exe, or is the one about a dumb jerk. The terrible thing is that, yeah, a lot of it was dumb. Is dumb. But while 3D Realms was doing away with taste and chivalry, they also did away with a bunch of other cruft that ...

Punching Down
Posted by News Fetcher on March 21 '11 at 10:00 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
Having rolled from fever to fever all weekend to find myself deposited here, before a blank editor, is startling to say the least. The last true memory I have is writing the last post, which was about getting the shit beaten out of you, a fact which almost invariably leads to beating the shit out of. Here's the strip, additional Pokemania, which has jabbed its thirsting roots into many of my companions. But yes, you go back and forth in this game, terrorizing young persons and doing serious harm to their pets. And that's the hero! That's the kind of ...

Dragon Age2 (in case you missed it)
Posted by News Fetcher on March 18 '11 at 02:30 PM
By from Penny Arcade:
I posted this yesterday but it was way down at the bottom of the page so you might not have seen it. All Three pages of our Dragon Age 2 comic are now live right here. You can also see the motion comic we did as well as get the in game item we created, "Hindsight". I mentioned a while back that I was using a lot of reference for these pages and I thought you might get a kick out of seeing one of them. After struggling all afternnon to draw Isabela throwing a dagger I finally asked ...

By from Penny Arcade:
It won't be terribly hard for you to find the video, if you haven't already seen it; the strip contains all the pertinent details. I wish his experience were less common. Certainly, I allowed myself to be beaten up on more than one occasion. Fighting more than one person at a time isn't good math. Certainly I had more than one opportunity to respond as this young man did, though without such a prodigious display of upper body strength. Ultimately I decided that if I was going to stay as weird as I obviously was, I was going to need ...
