Skullkickers
Posted by News Fetcher on August 27 '10 at 09:00 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
We've known Jim Zubkavich for a long time, and in a way, you probably know him too - his art is everywhere. He's a webcomics pioneer, he did the art for that online Zork, and he works for UDON, so he's literally up to his ass in iconic works for Capcom. He's taking some time to kick out a pulpy, dungeon crawler type comic called Skullkickers, so if you have enjoyed his other work (or if you just hate skulls) you should avail yourself of the prequel issue, which is free online through that Comixology thingy. Room 418
Posted by News Fetcher on August 27 '10 at 12:45 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
We saw an incredible Craigslist ad when we were getting ready to write the strip, an ad which quickly became the strip we were trying to make. Another ad went up shortly thereafter, in response. Also good! This sort of thing happens in the margins of any con; the first of those, anyway. The second is more likely to be a PAX-specific phenomenon. In the periphery of any social gathering, tiny conventions are created and dissolved continuously. When my anonymity was better preserved, I could wander the halls of the attached hotels and bear witness to the full Venn Diagram ...

Meet Your Omeganauts

By from Penny Arcade:
The wardrums have already begun to pound, and if you are able to interpret the message encoded deep in their rhythm, you'll hear a tale of warriors - and their terrible battlegrounds. The warriors I was referring to are: 1.Will Atkinson 2.Noah Callaway 3.Richard Pastrick 4.Joseph Berg 5.Kellyn Wolff 6.Matthew Senne 7.Stephen Schneider 8.Andrew Thivyanathan 9.Kirsten Mitchell 10.Andrei Krotkov 11.David Levin 12.Bryce Patten 13.Michael Bower 14.Tom Loughead 15.Eric Chon 16.Deborah Davis 17.Brandon Caroll 18.Christopher McMahon 19.Alan Dobler 20.??????????? And the blood-soaked battlegrounds being: Round 1: Zombie Dice Round 2: Bomberman Live Round 3: Beautiful Katamari Round 4: A MUSIC GAME ...

Let's go to the phones!

I have gotten almost 300 responses so far! There is simply no way I can post all the great mails I am getting. Here is are a few that echo what a lot of people seem to be saying. I this interesting? Do you want me to post some more? "While I try my best to buy video games when they come out, and pay the full $60, sometimes I miss one and end up getting it later, for cheaper, used. It's not so much the "buy new" aspect of this conversation that others me, but instead the characterization of ...

Let's talk about this...

By from Penny Arcade:
My Twitter and my email are both exploding today. People on both sides of the used game debate arer crazy passionate about this. If Penny Arcade was a talk radio show this would be a perfect time to “go to the phones”. Since we can’t do that I’d like to do the next best thing. If you are a developer or a gamer or both I’d like to hear your thoughts. Shoot me a mail and let me know how you feel about this but try and do it in a paragraph or so if you can, that way I ...

Words And Their Meanings
Posted by News Fetcher on August 24 '10 at 11:15 PM
By from Penny Arcade:
I had a different reaction to the "fightin' words" of THQ's Cory Ledesma than most. But then, I probably have a different perspective than most. About a lot of things, probably. But this in particular. The idea that THQ is somehow "disrespecting customers" with this kind of rhetoric misunderstands the situation as completely as it is possible to do so. In a literal way, when you purchase a game used, you are not a customer of theirs. If I am purchasing games in order to reward their creators, and to ensure that more of these ingenious contraptions are produced, I ...

D&D Essentials
Posted by News Fetcher on August 24 '10 at 03:00 PM
By from Penny Arcade:
I received an early copy of the new Dungeons and Dragons Red Box last week and quickly wrangled a group of friends for a trial run. The game consisted of my wife Kara who has only played 4e a handful of times. My friend Alex who has played in my Monday night game for nearly two years now (Holy shit has it really been that long!). The dashing Kris Straub of Chainsaw Suit fame with his months of 4e experience and his lady friend Marlo who had never played a game of D&D in her life. I want to mention ...

Traditional Values

By from Penny Arcade:
You might have heard of D&D Essentials already; I don't really know what to think of it yet. Billed as a streamlined yet compatible version of Dungeons & Dragons, it makes a virtue of speed at every level of play. It's not hard to find thoughts out there on it, but I couldn't contextualize them because I don't know what's true. I wondered when this day would come, to be sure. In the same way that you don't broach the subject of inevitable death at the register of the pet store, Gabriel was taking to this type of play so ...

Creationism
Posted by News Fetcher on August 20 '10 at 09:00 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
Nobody likes artists, and who can blame them? When they aren't challenging your preconceptions or whatever, or renouncing the boundary between being and nonbeing, they're beating you at games with their nigh mystical bullshit. It's been our intention to capture MNC in a strip, but this has to be something like food writing: trying to communicate what is noteworthy about it has a profoundly appetizing effect. We had the same fantasy about Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, and a similar thing occurred. These are simply games which are Good, their Gs firmly capitalized. Their virtue hangs directly from ...

Precipice
Posted by News Fetcher on August 17 '10 at 12:15 PM
By from Penny Arcade:
Colloquially, people either refer to it as Precipice or Rainslick. Does that mean something, I wonder? Is one of these types of people from Venus? It's impossible to know. in any event, there's new Precipice (or Rainslick, if you prefer) available here. (CW)TB

Something Which Actually Happens
Posted by News Fetcher on August 16 '10 at 10:30 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
Attempting to experience as broad a swath of the medium as I can - to maximize my usefulness to you, but also, you know, video games - it's still entirely possible for me to miss things. The worst part is that if I actually like any of the games I'm playing, which is a nice outcome, another game must inexorably lose. That's how it was with the original Mafia, considered something of a holy text by many PC enthusiasts, and something I skimmed at best. I don't intend to miss it on the second go 'round. Short of, say, something ...

Lego Creationary
Posted by News Fetcher on August 16 '10 at 09:30 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
My son is a convicted Lego Maniac. This weekend we were at Toys R Us and saw a game called Creationary which looked pretty much like Pictionary but with Lego. We played it a few times this weekend and I still think that’s a good way to describe it. The box comes with a selection of Lego from basic bricks to wheels and even some people. You roll a die to determine a category and then pick a card. The categories are what you’d expect, Nature, Things, buildings, vehicles and a wild. The cards are separated into easy medium and ...
