The Universal Analogy
Posted by News Fetcher on June 04 '10 at 09:00 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
I'm fairly certain that playing videogames has given me unrealistic expectations when it comes to solving real problems. Independent of the scenario - a race of ravenous sentient robots, a wife lost in the folds of a parenthetical metanarrative, and so on - I can be expected to deliver a satisfactory resolution in twenty hours or less. More than satisfactory, in fact. I will recalibrate your entire concept of success as it relates to human endeavor. I might leave a crack somewhere in the proceedings, something to allow for a sequel, sure - Navajo rugs, and so forth. But this ...

D&D and Drawing
Posted by News Fetcher on June 03 '10 at 10:00 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
On Memorial Day I ran a D&D game with my friend Alex. It was a special game for the wives of my players and Kurtz. The girls tend to like funny stuff and a so we cooked up a little adventure based on the Twilight phenomenon. It was a fun night with lots of inside jokes for the girls and a cool set piece encounter at the end. I'm curious if you guys would be interested in the ability to download this adventure so that you could run it yourself. My notes are pretty loose but if there was interest ...

Your Definition Headquarters

By from Penny Arcade:
I tend to like a little wiggle room in my narratives. I don't like to know absolutely everything, and often what I come up with on my own I like better than what is offered, so for me the best kinds of stories feature defined regions of white space. There isn't much I like more than the feeling of "collaborating" with the creator of a work I enjoy, and the margins of the defined account are where I tend to engage them. I like all the elements in a kind of superposition, hung in some whirling system, and this whirling ...

Hot With Heat
Posted by News Fetcher on May 31 '10 at 10:30 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
Split/Second - I will honor them by maintaining the slash - is an incredibly solid product. You can play the demo as many times as I did, which (between you and me) could well be described as a fuck-ton, and emerge from it with a sense that you have a firm handle on its bombast and can therefore skip the final release. It will be more of this, you might say to yourself. You'd be wrong; I certainly was. Would you be surprised to learn that the demo map might be the least ridiculous one on offer? Or that its ...

Everything You Need To Know About Blur
Posted by News Fetcher on May 27 '10 at 11:15 PM
By from Penny Arcade:
Blur is marvelous, even though these might as well be real power-ups. IGN delivered as much savagery as the game is likely to receive in review form, and if absolute dominion over your opponents is the only way you're able to experience pleasure, you might find yourself writing a similar piece. I don't blame him at all for it. People play games for different reasons - this is part of the reason we have done this strip. Can you come to terms with bullshit? How about luck? Do you recognize it as a distinct form of energy that sometimes informs ...

Some things you can buy if you want
Posted by News Fetcher on May 26 '10 at 09:30 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
If you have not checked out the Penny Arcade store recently you should. I say that because, when you buy things from the store we get the money and we use it to buy stuff. Here are a few items of interest: -A new shirt based on this comic. -Our anniversary book. -The Move Minor Standard shirt. -The Lookouts print pack If you want to keep buying things after you're done in our store you can always pick up a copy of the D&D Player's Strategy guide. I drew the cover for this book and its got a ton of ...

We've Got To Get To The Jamba Juice
Posted by News Fetcher on May 25 '10 at 11:15 PM
By from Penny Arcade:
I played through Alan Wake prior to the actual release, before much was made of its fairly vigorous "promotional consideration." I've already said that as a writer in the Northwest, liking a game about a writer in the Northwest was probably a foregone conclusion. I never got tired of the way their technology manipulates light, and there are discussions to be had about the narrative itself that are worth having. I didn't notice the brands, or didn't care, because I was trying to keep my entire body contiguous, or I was busy looking at something else - but God damn, ...

Gabriel thinks that he might be done with Red Dead Redemption already, and it won't be the first time I've taken a save we've created together and dragged it to completion. We pulled a very solid night of multi out of it, though; I should have recognized just how bright that candle was, and reverse-engineered the saying. Gabriel (more or less) feels as though he's seen "the loop." He suspects, and not without evidence, that he will be riding a horse from hell to breakfast and shootin' them what needs it, and on 'til morning. That's what happened in the ...

The Wince Of Persia
Posted by News Fetcher on May 21 '10 at 10:00 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
I just put Forgotten Sands to bed, last night around nine or so. It's strange, in a way, but maybe we shouldn't wonder when a series about time travel literally travels, itself, through time. We loved the last Prince of Persia, which was entitled "Prince of Persia," without the gentle comforts a subtitle might provide. These affections placed us in the minority, though, and the franchise was routed - sent careening backward through the catalogue, regaining consciousness at a place just after the one everybody claims to like but hardly anyone bought. What you get with The Forgotten Sands is ...

Here some quick thoughts about the games I've been playing recently: Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands: I've devoted the last two nights to Prince and each night it has been almost impossible for me to put the controller down and go to bed. The puzzles are clever, the level design is inspired and the gameplay is a fucking blast. It simply does not get much better in my book. Prince is like a Roller Coaster. It's not super long but the entire time you're on it your having fun. Red Dead Redemption: If Prince is a roller coaster then ...

Mailbag
Posted by News Fetcher on May 19 '10 at 09:00 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
A PA reader and medic stationed just outside Baghdad sent me a mail this week asking about how I run my D&D games via Email. It just so happens that with the new baby I have not had time to run a proper game for my crew. What I decided to do instead is take them through a little adventure via Email until I'm able to get back to the table. Email can be a great way to focus on story elements in your game rather than combat. Personally I like to make my Email adventures more about decisions and ...
