A Medically Recognized Condition
Posted by News Fetcher on October 15 '10 at 12:00 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
Having sons means (among other things) that we can buy things "for" those sons that we might not purchase for ourselves. I think Invizimals probably fits somewhere into that scheme. It's an Augmented Reality game, like EyePet let's say, but it's distinctly unlike EyePet in that is actually Pokemon. This is pretty crafty shit, and if I were the right age (which I'd say was 5-8) it would be ridiculously, almost dangerously compelling. In Pokemon, you make a dude and he runs around and collects dangerous animals. In Invizimals, you literally are the person who catches monsters, invisible ones, with ...

What A Weird Day

DOTA's Icefrog is a bastard? The terrible, true story of Mythic's dissolution? This is the dawning of the age of the blog confessional, apparently. (CW)TB

Precipice Chapter Nine
Posted by News Fetcher on October 13 '10 at 12:45 PM
By from Penny Arcade:
More Precipice, and I'm sorry it's late. I usually write these at night, which feels appropriate, but my son, my daughter, and my wife are all sick, and when my daughter cries over the monitor it's like I've been electrocuted. I can't put any kind of thought together, let alone two thoughts, and this installment has many thoughts in sequence. (CW)TB

Gamma World
Posted by News Fetcher on October 13 '10 at 10:15 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
I was able to purchase a copy of Gamma World from a “Premiere Store” near my house last weekend and I ran the game on Monday for my normal group. We have been playing the same campaign now with the same characters for nearly two years so this was sort of a break. I’ve spoken to all of them and we’re playing Gamma World again next Monday as well. Defeating Tiamat may have to wait a few weeks while we stomp Badders and dig through ancient junk. I had them all create characters at the table before the game and ...

More Things Than Are Dreamt Of
Posted by News Fetcher on October 13 '10 at 09:00 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
This one hardly needs a preface. Sometimes, the comic is word for word true. The core story in Gabe's regular Monday game is pretty heady stuff. Characters die, are reborn, mortals are an aberration, their planet is a prison, not metaphorically but physically, that kind of thing. They've been playing for two full years this Christmas, and the things they do and the forces they must contend with have tremendous heft. At what point does narrative gravity become mere weight? As a manufacturer of Narrative Gravity, it's a question I don't actually want an answer to. Every table has its ...

What's Not To Like
Posted by News Fetcher on October 11 '10 at 10:45 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
Gabe really does have a bat! A real bat, just hangin' up in the eaves and devourin' thousands of insects every night. You might be surprised to learn how codified the process is for keeping and encouraging bats, I wasn't aware this is something one did, but I'm overjoyed to live in a world more interesting than I previously thought. There are those who find their impish faces and split noses vile, but that's not my demo. Bats are my favorite mammals by a wide margin, and yes, I'm aware that humans are mammals. I have a high opinion of ...

The Apex
Posted by News Fetcher on October 08 '10 at 09:30 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
Cold Stone is generally a dessert, but it can also be a meal - the one by us will fold forest mushrooms, prosciutto, or Black Forest ham into gravy ice cream into a savory mass. This kind of versatility is what makes it so core to our Identity as a people. 4 Heroes Of Light has been pretty bizarre thus far. Earning, owning, and wearing hats has been just as satisfying as I imagined it would be, but you can make assumptions about the game based on its inviting art and young protagonists that are not borne out by the ...

Our Store Is Back!
Posted by News Fetcher on October 06 '10 at 11:45 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
Brian has essentially killed himself getting things going, but it's ready for you now. A few noteworthy additions, since it's been away: 1. The Matchmaker shirt. 2. Dickwolves shirt. 3. Book Bundle now includes all six compilations. Most importantly, though, we've started pre-orders for the Penny Arcade: The Series DVD. The DVD, assembled by 2 Player, has every episode of the show in addition to four unreleased 4th Panel episodes. As if that weren't enough, it includes over three hours of deleted scenes, and two commentary tracks for every episode of the main series along with English subtitles. It is, ...

Dungeons and Dragons
Posted by News Fetcher on October 06 '10 at 10:15 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
(Trigger Warning for attempts to coerce laughter through foul language, Dungeons, Dice rolling, contempt for Hydra’s bodily autonomy,Dragons,) One of my favorite events at PAX Prime this year was our live D&D game. I sat down with Tycho, Scott Kurtz, Wil Wheaton and our DM Chris Perkins for one of the best games of D&D I’ve ever played. If you missed it at PAX, you can now watch the entire game over on the WOTC site. Oh and we all dressed up like our characters. Seriously, you gotta see these videos. -Gabe out

Warmachine, Precipice
Posted by News Fetcher on October 06 '10 at 10:00 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
As I mentioned after PAX, it was my great honor to write lyrics and a vocal melody about Warmachine, the thunderous tabletop wargame from Privateer Press. Well, that track is now available to download on the Xbox if you're keen, with a PSN version to follow shortly. Privateer Press is also donating all proceeds from the track to Child's Play, which is compounds the honor I felt in serving them previously. Since they won the song at the Child's Play Charity Dinner and Auction to begin with, donating the earnings off the track is incredibly generous. They've created something like ...

Full Of Twists And Turns
Posted by News Fetcher on October 04 '10 at 09:30 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
New rumblings about a Myst movie were more or less irresistible as strip material. Now, though, as the most deeply Myst obsessed human being affixed to this planet, I must spend the rest of the post walking it back. It's simply a misnomer that Myst has no story. It has the very oldest kind of story in fact, one about fathers and sons. If it had been less spellbinding visually, maybe somebody would remember it. As it stands, Myst - for most people, on whatever platform they find it - is a game about a lighthouse. Is that still better ...
