The Ides Of Harsh
Posted by News Fetcher on April 12 '10 at 12:00 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
I've been asked before why we haven't "weighed in" on the Infinity Ward/Activision lawsuit, and the main reason (I would say) is that it is exceedingly difficult to tell what is true. Know that I have a thunderhead of dark crows situated in the vicinity of every word spoken in regards to the industry, raw, jag-beaked birds, rough specimens that perch and hear - but without the documents everyone is fighting over, the whole thing is pretty maury. It became clear almost immediately that the blogs were being leveraged as forward positions in some kind of Public Relations war, ...

A Matter Of When

By from Penny Arcade:
It's likely situated at a point somewhere below your comment threshold, but there is a kind of holy war occurring in Star Wars canon. With the Clone Wars cartoon in its second season, and the fan-favored Mandalorians making a debut, it's important to understand that there are multiple levels of continuity - and itsdelineations are more codified than you might have thought. You might imagine of them as levels of reality, which become more pure as they ascend: C-canon refers to the Expanded Universe, where books and most games dwell. It occupies a more debased sphere than T-canon, to which ...

OD&D
Posted by News Fetcher on April 07 '10 at 10:15 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
Many of you approached me during PAX East to thank me for the D&D news posts I make. As a DM I know how hard it can be to find inspiration some times. As long as I'm running a game I'll keep posting the crazy stuff I throw at my players. In fact, here is the latest experiment I ran on them. As so often happens in fantasy worlds, their characters stumbled across a magic artifact. This particular item when used, sent them all back in time. Here is an excerpt of the email I sent out to all of ...

By from Penny Arcade:
One deficit an electronic reader has over printed media, and this is only a factor if you've been in the air as much as we have lately, is that there are portions of the flight where you can't read. Your "book," as it were, now belongs in the same criminal class of devices which includes laptops and missile transponders. The other deficit, I suppose, is that when the device runs out of power your "book" ceases to exist. It retains the gaudy and absurd physicality so common with objects, but all the purpose has leaked out. The unbook you have ...

JJGO SHOW
Posted by News Fetcher on April 06 '10 at 03:00 PM
By from Penny Arcade:
So You might remember a while back we talked about our disastrous appearance on the Jordan Jesse Go Show. It was a real clusterfuck of misunderstandings, misguided expectations and just bad chemistry. I think I could probably get along with Jordan alone but the addition of Jesse was toxic. Personally I think the obvious contention makes for a pretty funny show. Jesse is not proud of it though which is not surprising. He kicks off the podcast with a disclaimer warning new listeners that this particular show is not indicative of the rest of their work. You can listen to ...

PAX Preregistration Is Open
Posted by News Fetcher on April 05 '10 at 12:45 PM
By from Penny Arcade:
We just opened it up for the west coast PAX, which we call PAX Prime internally, because we think it evokes a gigantic robot. Maybe we'll change it at some point! Maybe robots will recede from fashion, and we'll have to hitch our wagon to some new destructive force. I should emphasize that the last two shows sold out before they even opened, so if you would like to attend PAX, this might be something you want to square away. Also, Robert wanted me to tell you that the next episode of Penny Arcade: The Series went up. It is ...

Penny Arcade (by Kate Beaton)
Posted by News Fetcher on April 05 '10 at 10:30 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
Kate Beaton is, among other things, an organism - and she's good at it. That is to say, she's good at being. She's got a ton of autonomous processes that regulate her operation, and this leaves the higher order functions free to pursue her noble endeavors. She may also be a PERVERT. It's rare that I have the kind of time it takes to wait in a gadget line anymore, but with both sets of parents in town we were able to negotiate some leave. I'm of the opinion that these lines are their own form of good, I am ...

My day off
Posted by News Fetcher on April 02 '10 at 07:45 PM
By from Penny Arcade:
I am taking the day off to recover from PAX East and the book tour. So far I've played a lot of Lego Star Wars with my son and worked on my D&D campaign. It's been a good day. I did want to post two things real quick though. 1. Here is some awesome video of the PAX East witch. 2. You can vote for us in the Time Magazine 100 most influential people of the year poll. -Gabe out

Penny Arcade (by Erika Moen)

By from Penny Arcade:
There was a point after PAX East had come to a close and the second leg of our book tour was underway that we began to understand we had fucked up. There were not many opportunities for this sensation to exert itself, our heads only rarely bobbed above the surface of our responsibilities, and every loose moment was invested in readers of the site. We were glad of the opportunity, certainly. But after being away from our families for longer that we have ever been, at some point we ran out of whatever material we construct these things from. I ...

Friends, Romans, Countrymen
Posted by News Fetcher on March 30 '10 at 11:15 PM
By from Penny Arcade:
We spent a substantial amount of time discussing GameCrush this week, trying to discern exactly what was going on there, and I'm not certain we managed to pierce the shell. Their site suggests that they are still down on account of ten thousand requests in five minutes, something which happens on a daily basis here at Penny Arcade, even though we don't rent women from our digital storefront. I want to think this is a thing that will wither and fall, dry and crisp, dying on the stalk. Am I wrong? Kontiki's Störvald Tortilla invested his time well in ...

DM 101
Posted by News Fetcher on March 29 '10 at 06:00 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
The content itself is imprecise - the greatest danger Gabriel's characters are likely to face is literally drowning in their platinum wealth - but it is entirely true that during PAX East, when a DVD of The Dungeon Masters went missing for a panel, my cohort did create a new panel on the spot and then operate said panel for its duration. To the extent that one man can be proud of another man without shaming the other, I am incredibly proud of him. Proudmax; pride which abuts against the theoretical limits of pride. Our theory regarding PAX is that ...

PAXination
Posted by News Fetcher on March 25 '10 at 11:15 PM
By from Penny Arcade:
We had a problem with viruses at the last PAX - specifically, they were multiplying inside people's bodies - something this comic attempts to rectify. Whatever. Listen: have you heard about EA's new devilry?!? This is what digital delivery was supposed to result in, before it had materialized, and some of it even came true: inexpensive games, smaller games, games a la carte. Do you remember the original Gran Turismo 5, which sported a completely fragmentary version of the typical experience? That's just what people thought was inevitable back then. It turns out that the people who actually buy games ...
