Just as in years past, we submit a distillation of the Big Three Briefings. This E3 has been difficult to observe usefully from afar, because merely watching doesn't convey the data it used to: so much of the offering is directly experiential. People are waving things, or they're waving their arms in front of things, or they're looking at magical screens that shit is popping right out of. It would be like if a person came out and started talking about chocolate, and then ate some chocolate, and then walked off stage. That is not data. There's so much conjecture ...

I just wanted to drop a reminder that I have collected a bunch of my D&D posts on one page. You can also grab my adventure "Dusk" there. This was my first attempt at taking my notes for an adventure and trying to turn them into something another DM could take and run with. So far I've had 14,145 people download the adventure which I am super happy about. What I don't know for sure is if they actually played it and had fun. So if you grabbed "Dusk" and gave it a try please shoot me a mail and ...

I feel bad for the models that work expo halls. Maybe it's better than other kinds of day work, I wouldn't know. I try to avoid making eye contact, on the off chance it's as weird for them as it is for me. It's not their humanity that drives me away, though it's rare to see a person who wouldn't be improved with a few tufts of iridescent plumage. No, it's that I have the run-of-the-mill, God given shame that naturally accompanies interactions with women who are being paid to endure me. I'm ready to hear these E3 press conferences ...

Project Hatesphere

By from Penny Arcade:
The "Mortal Kombat Rebirth" short exists in that continuum that appends gravitas to fundamentally ridiculous subject matter by attempting to reconcile it with the real world. That's something I do as a form of recreation; I'm not trying to say that this isn't a good time investment. Alan Moore takes cultural shrapnel and transforms it, via a similar process, into material that assaults the mind. I'm just not certain that every brand can withstand this kind of analysis. Did any of you check out that Transformers demo, the one that just went up? What do we make of this motherfucker? ...

RvB Community Auctions for Child's Play!
Posted by News Fetcher on June 09 '10 at 12:00 PM
By from Penny Arcade:
Over drinks with some of the staff last night, they wanted to make sure I knew about some incredible auctions the group had put together. Such is the scale of Child's Play, now, that it's almost impossible for me to know everything in real time, ands its scope extends well beyond the main drive. Anyhow, there's a number of really amazing things still available - browse, and be delighted. Of particular note is this shockingly detailed ODST helmet, a video of which you can see here. Trust me, you want to wait around for the end. (CW)TB

An Inside Job
Posted by News Fetcher on June 08 '10 at 11:15 PM
By from Penny Arcade:
We were trying to imagine what it looks like backstage when there is a Technology Problem - capital T, capital P - during an iPhone announcement. We don't think it matters who you are, or if you are responsible for the problem, if you just now got there, or even if you work for Apple. It is core to our assertion that in the unassuming frame of Steve Jobs there roils a dark power, and that there are moments when this malevolent force must find release. More than one time in the past week, and this was a surprise to ...

While I was feeding the baby this morning at five a.m. I had an idea. What if Coruscant had a newspaper? What would their stupid political cartoons look like? I had fun doing this. I may do some more. -Gabe out

Faire Thee Well
Posted by News Fetcher on June 07 '10 at 09:45 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
In the manner of today's hottest reality programs, I need to inform you that the story you are about to read is entirely true. Historically in cases such as this the names have been changed to protect the innocent. In this case, the names have been retained specifically to amplify their shame. Lore Sjoberg's classic hierarchy is an invaluable tool, but at this late hour could do with an increase in resolution. Even so, Version 2.0 does firmly delineate the gulf between people who play role-playing games and those who play live-action role playing games, though I doubt that Faire ...

The Universal Analogy
Posted by News Fetcher on June 04 '10 at 09:00 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
I'm fairly certain that playing videogames has given me unrealistic expectations when it comes to solving real problems. Independent of the scenario - a race of ravenous sentient robots, a wife lost in the folds of a parenthetical metanarrative, and so on - I can be expected to deliver a satisfactory resolution in twenty hours or less. More than satisfactory, in fact. I will recalibrate your entire concept of success as it relates to human endeavor. I might leave a crack somewhere in the proceedings, something to allow for a sequel, sure - Navajo rugs, and so forth. But this ...

D&D and Drawing
Posted by News Fetcher on June 03 '10 at 10:00 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
On Memorial Day I ran a D&D game with my friend Alex. It was a special game for the wives of my players and Kurtz. The girls tend to like funny stuff and a so we cooked up a little adventure based on the Twilight phenomenon. It was a fun night with lots of inside jokes for the girls and a cool set piece encounter at the end. I'm curious if you guys would be interested in the ability to download this adventure so that you could run it yourself. My notes are pretty loose but if there was interest ...

Your Definition Headquarters
Posted by News Fetcher on June 01 '10 at 11:15 PM
By from Penny Arcade:
I tend to like a little wiggle room in my narratives. I don't like to know absolutely everything, and often what I come up with on my own I like better than what is offered, so for me the best kinds of stories feature defined regions of white space. There isn't much I like more than the feeling of "collaborating" with the creator of a work I enjoy, and the margins of the defined account are where I tend to engage them. I like all the elements in a kind of superposition, hung in some whirling system, and this whirling ...
