A Final Fantasy XIII Primer
Posted by News Fetcher on March 15 '10 at 10:45 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
Kiko and Gabe are here, talking about Final Fantasy XIII, and I am on the absolute periphery of it. Did they receive a different version? The game they're playing sounds pretty good. There's a lot to keep track of, the worlds of Cocoon and Pulse have a unique cosmology, which is why we have offered up today's strip - to help anchor you in that unique context. And you may need anchors, desperately, because you might find your attention beginning to wander. Imagine my surprise when discovering that the dude with a chocobo literally roosting - roosting, sir - in ...

The Bar Mitzvah
Posted by News Fetcher on March 12 '10 at 12:15 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
I've been trying to write this post forever, forever, but my cohort has been taking a "Blur Break" now that has gone on for the better part of an hour, and it's almost impossible not to look at the screen while these things occur. Furthermore, it's difficult not to stand to one's feet once the final lap has begun. And then, at this lap's culmination, it takes every ounce of my reserve power not to hoist a defiant fist. Bizarre Creations only makes great games, so it should not surprise us that Blur follows tradition. Their UI is a marvel ...

Applied Scheduling
Posted by News Fetcher on March 10 '10 at 12:15 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
Now that I've finally got a dependable crew in the new Battlefield: Bad Company - and a bandolier stuffed with the fruits of my progress - it's time to let everyone who relies upon me down. Again. If there is a decision matrix that determines what game is going to be played, Final Fantasy exists at a point somewhat beyond that machinery. The fact that I wasn't able to fully enjoy Twelve still haunts me to this day, because the story behind all that stuff I couldn't choke down really worked when someone else was playing it. Good taste has ...

The Straub Factor
Posted by News Fetcher on March 08 '10 at 12:15 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
I can't say enough nice things about Kris Straub. I know this because I once attempted to do so, to reach that theorized limit, and after almost fourteen solid hours of compliments I think we both felt a little weird about the entire process. He had begun texting openly at that point, and I had been reduced to effusion about a mutinous stitch in his garment which jutting - "capriciously," I sugested - just above his left sleeve. He has decided to live near to us now, blessedly near, and even works out of the office some days. Without telling ...

PATV

By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
There is a new episode of the PA series available today. This one kicks off a two parter in which we explore the hiring process here at Penny Arcade. We recently brought on a new associate designer and we had the camera guys here for the entire ordeal. I'll admit that this episode is a lot more serious than some of the previous ones. I think it's sort of tense and even uncomfortable but it's honest and I really like that. Oh, and before you start emailing me, no I will not tell you "the joke". -Gabe out

The Opposite of Poker Face
Posted by News Fetcher on March 05 '10 at 12:30 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
I feel good! I saw a some hummingbirds courting earlier, and it assured me of life's essential continuity. Gabriel - yes, our Gabriel! - has been playing Pandemic, entirely unbidden by me, and wanted to know where else he could go with cooperative mechanics. I recommended Shadows Over Camelot, a game which he seems to enjoy though most devoted tabletop gamers have long-since discarded it. He wasn't a Battlestar Fan, or I might have recommended that; Fury Of Dracula is more symmetrical, and isn't quite as devoted to the co-operative thesis. I considered recommending Arkham Horror, but... Actually, I did ...

The Name Of The Wind
Posted by News Fetcher on March 03 '10 at 12:15 PM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
Tycho told me to read a book the other day and I told him to tear out all of the pages and shove each one individually up his butt-hole. He didn't do that. Instead he opened the book to chapter near the beginning and told me to read just that chapter, only about four pages. I flipped the book over and read the back. “THE NAME OF THE WIND won't just impress longtime fantasy fans; it will absolutely blow them away -- an unprecedented, utterly breathtaking storytelling tour de force.” I kept reading things like the greatest story told in ...

The Next Chapter
Posted by News Fetcher on March 03 '10 at 12:15 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
Heavy Rain is really the thing at this point, right? Let's get up on some of that. I know Gabe craves that shit. I'd be playing Heavy Rain too, if it were actually possible for me to do so. I'm not entirely convinced it is. After trying three shops for the game upon our return, I finally tracked one down with copies to spare. I came home to an empty house, family out for the weekend, with nothing to do but play it. I want to stress the extent to which this is something that never happens. I dumped an ...

Heavy Rain and stuff
Posted by News Fetcher on March 02 '10 at 10:30 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
I've spent a couple nights with Heavy Rain now and I think it's really special. If you're a parent, (especially a Dad) this game can be pretty difficult to play at times. In fact I'm curious if people who don't have kids will end up getting as much out of it. I don't know if its an 89.85%, or a 9.7 out of 10. What I do know is that after a late night playing it, I sneak into my son's room and hug him before I go to bed. I think Heavy Rain is probably one of the most ...

Except not. Please don't kill anyone! Also, more Dragon Age: Awakening (singular): revealing inner monologue in three, two... (CW)TB

The Valley Of The Shadow of Death
Posted by News Fetcher on March 01 '10 at 11:45 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
March? Already? That's horrifying. When the first leg of the book tour was concluded, I slept a full thirteen hours in a black sleep which was beyond dreaming. That's how long it took for my skin to excrete our experience with Jesse Thorn, thereby returning my body to normal function. The schedule we were given commanded us to be a part of a program entitled "Jordan, Jesse, Go," and grudgingly we obeyed the document. Already, we were put out; the next episode of Maury promised to feature searing video of cheaters confronted literally in mid-cheat. When we arrived at the ...

Contrition
Posted by News Fetcher on February 26 '10 at 12:15 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
Sometimes I am exposed to the larger culture. I'm rarely improved by the process. It had been my intention to eat a hamburger, as is so often the case, and while doing so the restaurant's televisor felt it was important that I know Tiger Woods was very sorry. Then some other people came on and talked for awhile about whether or not he had been sufficiently sorry, but the people wondering this weren't handsome young men, and they didn't really seem like they were the best in the world at anything, and frankly they seemed kind of angry that they ...
