Fruit Ninja
Posted by News Fetcher on August 08 '11 at 10:16 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
My friend Brian over at Kotaku posted a nice preview of Fruit Ninja for Kinect. In it he mentions the fact that the game will notify you when someone has beaten your score. Since he had the game early and so did I, he says he was competing with me. I hate to break it to you Brian but you were competing with my son. Lil’ Gabe is the Fruit Ninja in our house.

Brian seems to like the game but it was not a huge hit at my house. Even Lil’ Gabe got tired of it after only a few games. Fruit comes up on the screen and then you try and cut it by waving your arms. That’s pretty much all that happens. once you’ve sliced a couple hundred bananas the novelty goes away. Especially if you’ve already sliced said bananas on your phone or tablet. From my point of view there’s just not much there.

Now, From Dust on the other hand is an incredible Arcade title. I’ve been puzzling my way through this game for a couple weeks now and I still love coming back to it. They do an incredible job of mixing in new mechanics as you progress so that the puzzles stay fresh. I highly recommend grabbing the trial at the very least.

August Tenth - so, Wednesday? - is the last day to buy your ticket and have it sent to you. Otherwise, you'll have to pick it up at the door. Which is also fine! Up to you.

Sound And Fury
Posted by News Fetcher on August 07 '11 at 11:30 PM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
What is true, absolutely true, is that Blizzard does not allow people to play Diablo III while they are not connected live to their servers. It is at this point that interpretation, reason, and cynicism create a drifting mobile of warring, caustic realities.

To put things diplomatically, this is a matter about which Gabriel and I do not agree. The growing ubiquity of Internet access keeps him from feeling any tremendous sympathy for the increasingly thin band of edge cases. Plus, and this may be applied as a generality, he is unfond of hippies and this type of complaint is situated in the continuum of Hippie-Type Shit, like how James tipped your bong after a monster rip and the whole fucking thing is seriously like whatever.

For my part, and I’m not, like, The Lord or anything, but the gulf between able to install a Spawn copy of the game and not being able to play offline at all seems pretty deep. Don’t really know what else to tell you. I saw that Blizzard came out with a response response, expressing their surprise at the consumer reaction, when this is more or less how consumers react every single time they learn the precise circumference of their golden leash.

Kickball, Sport Of Kings
Posted by News Fetcher on August 05 '11 at 09:00 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
We held a bachelor party for Levin night before last, a bachelor party that began with drunken kickball and culminated in drunken drinking. Gabriel attended the former, and I tagged in for the latter, each playing to our respective strengths. The drinking portion involved a Whisky Tasting, and I offered a series of tasting notes for the flight via Twitter, like so:

Humble Indie Bundle

bundlin' bundlin' bundlin' WHA

That's my evocative intro groove; I pray that you have been sufficiently tantalized. The HIB is back for a third outing, and Child's Play is honored to be in the mix. There's some hot, hot shit in there this time around - and when you pay over the current average, you get the second bundle as well. It's pretty twisted all told, might be somethng you want to get in on.

The Only Way To Be Sure
Posted by News Fetcher on August 02 '11 at 11:15 PM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
When I was tooling around the ‘Con a couple weeks ago, I managed to scam my way into a BioWare thingy where (much to my surprise) six massive Shepards stood vigil. The female Shepard that is, colloquially referred to as FemShep. It was all part of a contest designed to play up the distaff side of the equation, chosen by just under a fifth of the playerbase. You could go online and choose which one would be the default. Employees of the company were very excited about it, and all had their favorites; none of the ones I spoke to would have chosen the Shepard now known ignominiously as Shepard 5.

It’s one of these online shitstorms in certain quarters now, people don’t like how it shook out, or who might have shaken it out. That’s the trouble with democracy, huh? The wrong people are always voting.

The idea that this tousled, interstellar bad-ass with a sidearm, an assault rifle, and some kind of hard-light holoblade represents some kind of wilting star princess is beyond comprehension. This is the same Shepherd, Commander Shepard, whose exploits have cut this way and that across an entire galaxy; the one who parleyed with Reavers, and released the Rachni. The one who died and was reborn, the one who laid low a writhing and larval world-eater.

Acquisitions Inc.
Posted by News Fetcher on August 01 '11 at 02:00 PM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
Are you ready for more Acquisitions Inc.? I certainly hope so because we are getting the band back together for PAX prime. That’s right Jim, Omen, Binwin and Al will be going up against Dungeon Master extraordinaire Chris Perkins in another incredible adventure! Was that too much?

On Saturday August 27th from 3:30 to 5:30 we will be playing live on stage in the main theatre. This new game will be filmed by WOTC and then chopped up and delivered online a few weeks after the show. You can watch last year’s live game right here. I don’t want to say too much but trust me when I say we’re kicking the theatrics up a notch this time. So if you’re a D&D fan don’t miss it!

The Fire

By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
I’ve made no secret of my struggles to integrate the Nintendo 3DS into the contours of an entire life. The machine is literally my son’s Pokedex - that’s all it gets used for. It’s very good at being that; I don’t want to seem like that’s nothing. But, considering the lineage, it’s starting to look like the blanged-out wastrel heir of a once great house.

We could say that they cut the price of the device, or that they are cutting it, when what they have done in actual fact is to butcher it, hacking madly until the blade meets the board. The cut is comically large, verging on the bulbous. It doesn’t look strategic; it looks like they’re throwing treasure overboard in an attempt to keep the ship above water. Maybe they've got a "media story" that makes all of this look like a real plan, but who knows. Their online store is a nightmare: it’s like the nightmare an actual online store would have, it’s like if an online store were looking into a mirror while its fucking face melted away and the only thing that could staunch this horror was the eventual liquefaction of its optic nerve.

I honestly don’t know what it means for the Vita - it depends largely on why you think the 3DS is having trouble. Certainly, games on the Vita look more expensive than their 3DS counterparts, and we can be confident that there’ll be a premium attached. The reality for me is that even as a “gamer,” an enthusiast, a true adherent, my phone is enough even on a trip. Period. The premium cache associated with Portability capital-P has been obliterated, being portable is insufficient as a motivator when I have multipurpose computational sliver perpetually en pocké.

We’ve posted another of my live drawing sessions on PATV. We listened to the feedback we got last time and now you can watch it in real time or sped up. You can check out wither version right here.

I’ve switched from Ustream to JustinTV for these streams. I’m able to deliver a much higher res stream and I have control over if/when you see ads. If you’re interested in catching one of these shows live you should follow me on twitter. I don’t do them on any real schedule but most of the time they’ll be around 1:00pm pacific time on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I’ll always announce a show via my twitter a few hours before I start though.

Accountability
Posted by News Fetcher on July 29 '11 at 10:00 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
The nasty bit about Summer of Arcade is its density; I’m in no way finished with Bastion, and now they want me to play Lord for some nomadic dudesmen. They aren’t finished with their claims on my time, either, with stuff from Signal Studios waiting in the wings and Robot Entertainment’s Orcs Must Die(!) outside the blast radius of the promotion yet still colonizing my forebrain. I understand being able to purchase them all, like they want you to, but play them? Who can do this? Goro?

I don’t think that absolutely every game has to be co-operative, but it would help; as I am absolutely certain I’ve told you before, having to decide between being social and being solitary creates psychological jitter. That is to say, I wobble; I become a creature of superposition, and I never really coalesce. I’m as likely to watch Farscape reruns or edgy Korean thrillers a I am to play a game at that point. But I will sometimes stop playing a game because I would enjoy it more cooperatively, that is to say, I would enjoy it more as a game which does not exist.
