The Gods Of Modernity
Posted by News Fetcher on February 24 '10 at 01:31 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
It was a lot of fun watching this story mutate as the day progressed, warping in its essential shape, culminating in something like justice. A brigand has tasted his own medicine, and it is bitter. His Twitteris a hoot - he taunts Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling about the ability to alter game behavior at will, and in the very next message attempts to seek the developer's sympathy. It's like, wow, douche. Is lion taunting statistically correlated with lion attacks? Do some math, motherfucker. He's an utterly unrepentant hacker, yet he wonders what strange force keps gets his boxes banned. It ...

Book Tour Starts Tomorrow!
Posted by News Fetcher on February 22 '10 at 09:30 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
Our book tour kicks off tomorrow here in Seattle at the University Book Store. From there we make our way to California. You'll be able to purchase our new Anniversary book at any of oursignings (And we hope that you will) or you can just come say hi. This is our first book with our new publisher Random House and they are the ones that set up this book tour. This is also the first time we've done something like this and we really don't want to look like jack asses. So if you could come out to these signings ...

The Game
Posted by News Fetcher on February 22 '10 at 12:30 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
We have invented an incredible new game. It is called, simply, The Game. The rules are concise, which lets you bore directly into its core of boiling molasses. It is a game you play via Chat Roulette, which (as names go) is utterly complete as a descriptor. Chat Roulette connects you, your webcam, and your microphone to another random stranger's all-of-the-above. Also, in many cases, their all-of-the-below. This second one happens a lot, out of nowhere you're watching a man you don't know and can only partially see furiously engaged in what might be called a "gripping single player experience." ...

In The Post Above
Posted by News Fetcher on February 20 '10 at 01:15 PM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
I called the expansion "Awakenings," as opposed to Awakening, which is the actual name. It seems to me like they're missing an opportunity to give greater value to the customer, but if they're content (for whatever reason) to deliver a single awakening when they could have offered more that's between them and their conscience. Dragon Age: Awakenings Comic
Posted by News Fetcher on February 19 '10 at 04:00 PM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
I loved Dragon Age, and I loved making a comic for Dragon Age. When they started to spin up talk of an expansion, I was glad to see that it as something substantial nature instead of the more a la carte offerings, playsets really, hors d'oeuvres when what I was looking for was a hanging side of beef. A bit after Dragon Age: Awakenings was announced, they dropped us a line to see if we wanted another crack at the fiction. Man, what do you think? It's about a character who's still locked on the info page, but he'll be ...

A Cyclical Argument With A Literal Strawman
Posted by News Fetcher on February 19 '10 at 12:45 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
Alright. So, Ubisoft's new DRM. Supports unlimited installs and Cloud-based save data. Requires absolutely unbroken access to their master servers, or the product ceases to function. I can boil it right down for you: Nobody wins. Well, except pirates. Pirates always win, on a long enough timeline. Honestly, the timeline doesn't even need to be that long. Visit any thread regarding the topic, and I mean any thread, and it won't be three posts until someone raises the Goddamned Jolly Roger and says they'll pirate the game as a gesture consistent with some comprehensive ur-morality they've ginned up, one where ...

A Funny Dad Story
Posted by News Fetcher on February 17 '10 at 10:30 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
I don't mean to turn PA into an episode of Kids say the darnedest things but some of you might appreciate this. I was playing Star Wars with my son the other night when he said something funny. Little Gabe is obsessed with Star Wars and so much of our play time involves reenacting the movies. On this particular occasion he was playing the role of the emperor while I was Luke Skywalker. He had seated himself in my computer chair and when he spun around to face me I saw that he had placed a toy Lightsaber on the ...

Let Your Imagination Run Wild
Posted by News Fetcher on February 17 '10 at 12:30 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
An old friend. The last time Sony said supplies of the Playstation 3 were low, the results were hilarious - to say nothing of profitable. When I saw that sales had again dipped below the 360 in the U.S., there was never any question that this information would need to be contextualized somehow. It's not possible that people simply bought less of one than the other, because that's outside the narrative - the narrative of the returning king, the hooves of his swift steed red with the blood of the interloper. When I was young, my mother owned a book ...

The Corruption Of Our Youth
Posted by News Fetcher on February 15 '10 at 09:45 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
This is something that was brought to me as a legitimate avenue of concern. When I was straining the X10 stuff for nourishment, in receipt primarily of husks, I eventually found a reassertion of the quasi-exclusive Modern Warfare 2 DLC - a game whose iron scepter once made such inviolable edicts. I felt nothing. I felt less than nothing, actually, because the part of me that would have felt those things is gone. It really can't be overstated the extent to which Infinity Ward has destroyed that franchise for me. The most garish junior high peechee poem could not fully ...

Literalus
Posted by News Fetcher on February 12 '10 at 12:15 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
Gabe and I are beginning our descent into Rapture more or less simultaneously, so there's plenty to discuss. I'm still feeling my way around, seeking out the game's throughline. Gabriel loves it whenever there isn't shooting, and there is really quite a lot of shooting, which complicates things. What we both agree on is that Bioshock - and Rapture itself - are much, much broader subjects than the "gonzo shooters" which have thus far defined its chronology. Right from the install, though, Bioshock 2 deals in subversive, incredibly sophisticated humor. A glance at my task manager reveals that, while running, ...

Why Aren't We Coming To Your Town?
Posted by News Fetcher on February 10 '10 at 12:30 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
Ever since Gabriel posted the destinations for our book tour, there has been a steady stream of aggression amassing in his inbox regarding perceived slights towards specific cities o even broad regions. We don't harbor animosity of any kind for particular geographies, we are not thus constructed; these decisions have everything to do with the limitations of your physical universe and your unrelenting temporal schema. For me, every new place is a broad matrix of unmet people and unhad snacks, two quantities for which I have an endless enthusiasm. I won't presume to speak for Gabriel, who is more reticent ...
