I Try To Tell Heem
Posted by News Fetcher on April 22 '10 at 11:30 PM
By from Penny Arcade:
Is he actually listening to me when I say things? I'm perpetually trying to enrich that motherfucker, but it's like he ain't want to be enriched. And by the time he does get around to my choice selections, he doesn't remember that it was I who chose them, so that when he trundles up two years hence with this or that, and "have I seen it," it is like he is offering me glistening morsels of my own heart. Many, many years ago, while we were still doing a sporadic feature called Land of the Rising Fun, we imported a ...

Games are art
Posted by News Fetcher on April 21 '10 at 09:45 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
I get mail every day asking us to weigh in on this Roger Ebert thing. It's really not worth getting worked up about in my opinion. Of course video games are art. They are nothing but art. They are art piled on top of more art. As Tycho mentioned, Ebert is simply filling a role played out by art critics throughout history. There was the newspaper headline back in 1959 with regards to Jackson Pollock's work that said "This is not art — it's a joke in bad taste." It's a funny line but time has proven it was also ...

Again With The Art Stuff

There are many, many replies to Roger Ebert's reeking ejaculate, from measured Judo-inspired reversals of momentum to primal shrieks which communicate rage in a harrowing, proto-linguistic state. Thatgamecompany's Kellee Santiago chose to respond to him, which gave the whole thing a kind of symmetry, seeing as it was her TED speech that drove that wretched, ancient warlock into his original spasm. That was very polite of her, behaving as though she were one side of a conversation. For what it's worth. Which isn't much, honestly, because this weren't never a dialogue. He is not talking to you, he is just ...

Machinations
Posted by News Fetcher on April 19 '10 at 09:45 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
The story in the new Splinter Cell is of the International Intrigue variety, and by the time events have reached their culmination, every serpentine bend of the quintuple cross has been revealed. It's very much a genre, with its own peculiar texture, and Conviction scrupulously charts a more personal course through those events - but there's still plenty of New World Order Shadow Conspiracy boogita-boogita to go around. I have described the role of the enthusiast community as regards the development process as curatorial, which sounds nice, and feels at least partially true. There's husbandry, also, but then you have ...

By from Penny Arcade:
Splinter Cell: Conviction has virtues, and we may even get around to discussing them, but "incessant guard dialogue" is not among them. These people never shut their Goddamned mouths. Ever. Until you shoot them. The new game's emphasis on brutal murder has been decried in some corners, but players will appreciate the ability shut four of these douchebags up simultaneously. Coverage of the game has been fascinating, though it was always going to be. They boiled the flesh off of a beloved brand, suspending strange new textures and flavors in its thematic broth. The breadth of opinion is precisely where ...

Purgatory
Posted by News Fetcher on April 13 '10 at 11:15 PM
By from Penny Arcade:
I don't think I'll ever get back to Final Fantasy, now. Typically when I crush a game between my molars, making it a vessel for my rage, I eventually come to believe I have not served you to the utmost. It becomes something akin to exposure therapy, where placing myself close proximity to the hated thing results in a kind of psychological inoculation. Shortly thereafter, I tend to identify with my tormentor, "discovering" or manufacturing a series of "hidden virtues" which were previously "unvisible." When asked at PAX, I always assumed that my return was inevitable. Not only because it ...

The Ides Of Harsh

By from Penny Arcade:
I've been asked before why we haven't "weighed in" on the Infinity Ward/Activision lawsuit, and the main reason (I would say) is that it is exceedingly difficult to tell what is true. Know that I have a thunderhead of dark crows situated in the vicinity of every word spoken in regards to the industry, raw, jag-beaked birds, rough specimens that perch and hear - but without the documents everyone is fighting over, the whole thing is pretty maury. It became clear almost immediately that the blogs were being leveraged as forward positions in some kind of Public Relations war, ...

A Matter Of When
Posted by News Fetcher on April 09 '10 at 10:00 AM
By from Penny Arcade:
It's likely situated at a point somewhere below your comment threshold, but there is a kind of holy war occurring in Star Wars canon. With the Clone Wars cartoon in its second season, and the fan-favored Mandalorians making a debut, it's important to understand that there are multiple levels of continuity - and itsdelineations are more codified than you might have thought. You might imagine of them as levels of reality, which become more pure as they ascend: C-canon refers to the Expanded Universe, where books and most games dwell. It occupies a more debased sphere than T-canon, to which ...
