The Sound Of A Klaxon

I did my best to warn him, but he's quite certain that The Deck of Many Things has a place in his campaign. On this point, we don't entirely disagree; the only material distinction is that he believes it will "spice things up," and I believe will be its burning, meteor-pocked ruin. I've used the iPhone 4 over the weekend, and since I was upgrading from the 3G the difference is pretty striking performance-wise. With every update, and the last one in particular, that beautiful, classic device has transformed cycle by cycle into a gasping, wheezing creature, unable to tug ...

The Shipment
Posted by News Fetcher on June 24 '10 at 11:30 PM
By from Penny Arcade:
I called an Apple Store, just for kicks, to see how things were going during the launch, and if he thought they might have any phones ever. He described the line to me, the one outside of his store, as something like a human Möbius strip - a warping tendril folded in, a thing without earthly end. "I'm looking at eternity," he said. "I can see the tail of The Beast." I've gone on at length about how waiting in line is a tonic for the soul. For tech and films especially, it's a rare coordinate where you stand a ...

So yeah...how about those poop jokes. I guess at the very least it is not unprecedented. I made a pretty major change to the rules in my D&D campaign that I wanted to share. I'm not sure this is right for every group but it really worked for my guys. I decided to make most checks a minor rather than a standard action. Normally if a player wants to examine a strange fountain or try and pull a statue he needs to make a check. The DM might call for an arcana or a strength check and that is a ...

Redolent With Spices

By from Penny Arcade:
This was an authentic series of text messages sent to me by Gabriel. I would take a picture of it, but I would have to use my own phone to do so, which would sunder the universe. Rest assured that such communiques are not uncommon, and that taken in aggregate they present a wholly unified Aesthetics of Shit. I kept returning to the Transformers: War For Cybertron demo, time and time again - and yes, spell checker, Cybertron is a motherfucking word. Even though I'd hit the level cap, I kept telling myself I "wasn't sure" if I liked it ...

Secreting Digestive Ichor

By from Penny Arcade:
Kinect, being an onyx lozenge bristling with a combination of sensing "eyes" and licking "beams," has an inherent Fear Quotient (FQ). It generates a base amount of human terror simply by being plugged in. And after as little as twenty minutes spent observing human targets, test units are (reportedly) resting in puddles of acrid, burning saliva. I understand that we're supposed to envision Move and Kinect on some kind of Madison Square Garden fight poster, but I'm not entirely sure these are comparable products. Move attempts to split the baby, which is (metaphorically speaking) a noble gesture: one that attempts ...

The Brute Force Method
Posted by News Fetcher on June 17 '10 at 11:30 PM
By from Penny Arcade:
How is possible that I'd never played Words With Friends? I'd heard of it, of course, but it's not quite enough to say that it is Scrabble on the iPhone. You have to emphasize its asynchronous nature: its anytime-ness, its pocket-ness. It has a really weird pedigree, too, not that it comes in much, but a combination of Age of Empires and Scrabble is what I want always. I know that Porkfry prefers UniWar, and I understand completely; I simply prefer to fight with words. At least, I did. That's fairly quick, as personal obsessions go. We talked about how ...

Just as in years past, we submit a distillation of the Big Three Briefings. This E3 has been difficult to observe usefully from afar, because merely watching doesn't convey the data it used to: so much of the offering is directly experiential. People are waving things, or they're waving their arms in front of things, or they're looking at magical screens that shit is popping right out of. It would be like if a person came out and started talking about chocolate, and then ate some chocolate, and then walked off stage. That is not data. There's so much conjecture ...

I just wanted to drop a reminder that I have collected a bunch of my D&D posts on one page. You can also grab my adventure "Dusk" there. This was my first attempt at taking my notes for an adventure and trying to turn them into something another DM could take and run with. So far I've had 14,145 people download the adventure which I am super happy about. What I don't know for sure is if they actually played it and had fun. So if you grabbed "Dusk" and gave it a try please shoot me a mail and ...

I feel bad for the models that work expo halls. Maybe it's better than other kinds of day work, I wouldn't know. I try to avoid making eye contact, on the off chance it's as weird for them as it is for me. It's not their humanity that drives me away, though it's rare to see a person who wouldn't be improved with a few tufts of iridescent plumage. No, it's that I have the run-of-the-mill, God given shame that naturally accompanies interactions with women who are being paid to endure me. I'm ready to hear these E3 press conferences ...

By from Penny Arcade:
The "Mortal Kombat Rebirth" short exists in that continuum that appends gravitas to fundamentally ridiculous subject matter by attempting to reconcile it with the real world. That's something I do as a form of recreation; I'm not trying to say that this isn't a good time investment. Alan Moore takes cultural shrapnel and transforms it, via a similar process, into material that assaults the mind. I'm just not certain that every brand can withstand this kind of analysis. Did any of you check out that Transformers demo, the one that just went up? What do we make of this motherfucker? ...

RvB Community Auctions for Child's Play!
Posted by News Fetcher on June 09 '10 at 12:00 PM
By from Penny Arcade:
Over drinks with some of the staff last night, they wanted to make sure I knew about some incredible auctions the group had put together. Such is the scale of Child's Play, now, that it's almost impossible for me to know everything in real time, ands its scope extends well beyond the main drive. Anyhow, there's a number of really amazing things still available - browse, and be delighted. Of particular note is this shockingly detailed ODST helmet, a video of which you can see here. Trust me, you want to wait around for the end. (CW)TB
