My D&D game
Posted by News Fetcher on November 05 '09 at 11:45 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
My D&D group is so hungry for content that we actually play via email between games. Sometimes it's just the characters talking amongst themselves, other times it's more of a structured skill challenge. I tweeted an example yesterday of one of our exchanges and I got a lot of feedback as well as questions. I thought I'd respond to some of it here rather than trying to tweet back to everyone individually. First of all, here is the example I posted. -Why do you write so much for your players? As a DM you should never tell your players what ...

PAX East
Posted by News Fetcher on November 05 '09 at 11:30 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
PAX East is coming up quick and we're going to need some new enforcers to help us out. We will be bringing over about 150 of our west coast enforcers but we'd like to supplement that with another 150 new enforcers from the east coast. Enforcers get into the show for free but in return we work you like a dog. If this sounds like a fair arrangement to you then fill out this enforcer application and mail it to klindsay@penny-arcade.com. We'll be accepting applications until November 25th. The east coast show is shaping up incredibly well. You can take ...

The Price Of Loyalty
Posted by News Fetcher on November 04 '09 at 11:45 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
Runic Games is doing the Lord's work, in an robust and unambiguous fashion. Torchlight has the bracing qualities we associate with pure mountain streams. Let's run with that, actually; elemental is the keyword here, and not just because many weapons bear enchantments which confer elemental effects. I'd have said that an action RPG without multiplayer in the year two-thousand and nine was a fever dream before playing Torchlight; with the product in hand, I wonder if other people wouldn't just get in my way. As a design consideration, it was almost certainly the result of the eleven month development cycle ...

Magic: The Gathering Tactics
Posted by News Fetcher on November 03 '09 at 01:45 PM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
Historically, we've had a strange relationship with SOE's John Smedley - though I think it's more or less reached equilibrium now. We received a press release for a new game he's catalyzed over there, namely Magic: The Gathering Tactics, but since we don't run press releases there's no place for that. This being established, I think a lot of their work out of their Tucson and Denver studios is woefully underappreciated, and I want to show some support. I gave him a call yesterday to see if I could find anything out, and while I don't know if I succeeded ...

Some things
Posted by News Fetcher on November 02 '09 at 10:30 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
-My D&D campaign is featured over on the Obsidian Portal site this month. You can check out a little interview with me as well as take a look at a bunch of info from my campaign. If you are not familiar with it, Obsidian Portal is a site full of tools to let you build and manage campaign websites for tabletop games like D&D. The basic stuff is free but they also have a pay option that has a few more features. They call this their ascendant level service and they have been kind enough to give me a coupon ...

Assertion Twelve
Posted by News Fetcher on November 02 '09 at 10:15 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
Gabriel brought to my attention a post in a dungeonmastering board he reads, which detailed the circumlocutions some people go through trying to square their plans for a vibrant scenario and the Received Wisdom of official campaign materials. It might be because we think of every event, action, sentence, or phrase as something to pervert for our use, but I was made genuinely distraught by the notion that those books - which are suggestions, at best - would conspire to dilute your joy. Those things are tools, and what's more they're your tools, which means that they serve you. Our ...

Kick our ass at Tekken 6!
Posted by News Fetcher on October 30 '09 at 11:30 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
Tycho and I will be playing Tekken 6 this Sunday Nov. 1st as a part of the Xbox Live Game with Fame thing. You can get all the details over on the Microsoft community calendar site. You'll need to send a friend request to Tekken6Tycho or Tekken6Gabe and then be ready to kick our ass Sunday night at 7pm Pacific, 10pm Eastern time. And yes the rumors are true, I can do a three hit combo with Paul. That's like three hits...in a row. -Gabe out

In The Seventh House
Posted by News Fetcher on October 30 '09 at 10:00 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
Gabriel installed Windows 7 yesterday on his powerful new laptop, claiming that it "just works," which is a two-word phrase we typically associate with their competitors. He says it is "better," but saying that something is better than Vista is (as a statement) virtually content free. Vista turned a good machine, one capable of running all the latest software, into a reeking shitbox. To see a thing of beauty annihilated thus was genuinely traumatic, and sufficient to make me question the depth of my commitment to the platform in general - particularly when there are many valid routes to personal ...

Ratchet and Clank is so good
Posted by News Fetcher on October 30 '09 at 09:15 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
Tycho said he hasn't been playing Ratchet and Clank, but I sure as hell have. I've been putting a few hours into it every night this week and I love it. Obviously at this point in the series the platforming and combat mechanics have been polished to perfection. The character designs and animation are still inspirational. Once again the story is fun as well as funny. My favorite part of the game though, is the new time puzzles they've introduced with clank. If you've played the demo then you'll know what I'm talking about. Basically these challenges have you creating ...

Twisp & Catsby In: The Visitation
Posted by News Fetcher on October 28 '09 at 11:15 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
It seemed like it was about time for some Twisp and Catsby, which we hope is welcome. We wondered how the season might be interpreted in their strange realm, and now we have some measure of understanding. The site's built-in comic viewer is insufficient to contain the image as created, and though it carries a facsimile of the work, you can find the authentic, absolute version here. The only time playing videogames seems remotely like work is when the industry insists on its annual holiday death march, and since I try my best to avoid responsibility of any kind, I ...

PAX East (And Assorted Etcetera)
Posted by News Fetcher on October 27 '09 at 09:45 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
We opened up preregistration for PAX East last week! Occupying the chronospan March 26-28th, day tickets will run you $25, while the three-day pass goes for $45. What an incredible value! Two new shirts just went up as well: Automata, and Lookouts. In a strange experiment, we've got kids' sizes for the Lookouts shirt, in case you want your progeny to wear a garment emblazoned with dark portents they don't entirely understand. (CW)TB

Babicide
Posted by News Fetcher on October 26 '09 at 10:30 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
Dante's Inferno apparently sports an achievement called "Bad Nanny," so called because in order to secure this achievement one must murder ten million babies. Or some other number of babies. Honestly, I don't know how many babies you have to murder in order to get those points, but it seems to me that the number is not the focus here so much as the babies themselves. And the killing. My cohort's perspective is, as always, unique. I've read so many posts of such a batshit, bugfuck nature about this Modern Warfare Server Thing that it's hard to know where to ...
