Bayonetta Contest
Posted by News Fetcher on January 07 '10 at 02:00 PM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
I used to love looking in game magazines for those photos people used to send in, pictures of the screen itself or the player in front of the screen, showing off a newly minted high score in the way our primitive forebears might have displayed some horned carcass. Of course, such images may be altered now: it is a grotesque fact of the modern world that we literally cannot believe our eyes. We can retain the elegance and beauty of the old ritual, though, by verifying the truth of it via Achievements and Trophies. The contest is thus: upon defeating ...

DnD Sandbox
Posted by News Fetcher on January 06 '10 at 11:45 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
The overarching story-line of my D&D game involves my players traveling the world thwarting the machinations of Tiamat's many heads. I treat each head as a sort of self contained "season" with a beginning, middle and end. I also try and make each season different in terms of game play and storytelling. When it came time to move on to the Green Head I wanted to do something very different. Up until now my game has been on rails. I don't think that's a bad thing, in fact it has allowed me to plan out some really cinematic encounters. I was ...

A Review Of The Preview
Posted by News Fetcher on January 06 '10 at 12:45 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
You can actually play MAG now, most of the time I'd say, but it can be a harsh-ass motherfucking mistress. The vaunted 256 player modes aren't available to new players - you could be forgiven for thinking that 256 was a kind of default, since the title and these mystic numerals have been made inextricable, but there you have it. The level requirement for entry into such realms is 10, which I haven't yet secured. I estimate that it would take most people perhaps three, three and a half hours to get there, "there" being the game they thought it ...

Best Punchlines Of 2009
Posted by News Fetcher on January 04 '10 at 12:00 PM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
Last week, when every blog took the opportunity to regurgitate a rancid, reeking mess of the year's "best" every Goddamned day, I wondered why we weren't partaking in this ritual. Those articles were barely worth reading the first time, and now they're shambling back, blind and grasping, like some headless groundskeeper? That seems like a strong play, and preferable to actual work. So,here they are: the most incisive, most poignant assertions made by the site in two-thousand and nine. If you don't remember them, maybe you were drunk. As you so often are. Drunkard. I'm as excited ...

The 4th Panel
Posted by News Fetcher on January 01 '10 at 07:00 PM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
The very first episode of our 4th Panel show went up today on PATV. This show is focused on Tycho and I writing the strip. It's much more like our Podcasts, only trimmed down quite a bit. I've already heard from lots of people asking about all the footage that gets cut from a show like this, the sort of stuff that would have been in the podcast. We have a lot of that, and I think the plan is to pack all that stuff onto the DVD when it comes out. -Gabe out

The Bright Side
Posted by News Fetcher on January 01 '10 at 11:15 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
Holidays where people exchange thoughtful objects (or those which sport a pronounced turkey component) get a pass, but "enforced revelry" as a general concept is one I abhor. I have an especial loathing for chronofetishism. My prediction for 2010 is that we'll spend the entire Goddamn thing spitting blood and teeth into the sink. Happy New Year. I guess this is a World of Warcraft strip, based as it is on this weird news story, but the weirdness factor extends it somewhat beyond the normal constraints. Essentially, police tracked their quarry in the real word via his avatar, which is ...

By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
This is the kind of conversation we have after we've been separated for a week. The throughput gets redlined with a thorough, almost reptilian, probably repulsive masculinity. It's barely coherent, as data; it's more like an extended club mix of caged animal impulses. So, um... enjoy(?). The demo for Army of Two: The 40th Day has a difficult job - the resuscitation of a comatose brand - so if it falters in this task, perhaps it may be forgiven. I had a fairly complex relationship with the original game, as you may recall - one that travelled through a place ...

The Gallery is very NSFW! I've created a gallery with some of my favorite entries from this year. Take a look and see if you recognize any of your friends munching on cookie dicks. Thanks again to everyone who participated. -Gabe out

How The Illithid Stole Lolthmas, Part Four
Posted by News Fetcher on December 28 '09 at 11:30 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
Was the Illithid ultimately able to steal Lolthmas? Can Lolthmas truly be stolen? The final page may contain these answers. We will try, I repeat try, to wait a year before doing that again. I italicized that second "try" to emphasize the difficulty therein. I'm a little afraid to see Sherlock Holmes, not so afraid that I won't see it, certainly, but still: fear. As a palliative, I have taken several doses of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, which stars the incredibly rad Jeremy Brett. If it were not thoroughly impossible, I would say that he was the inspiration for ...

Dickerdoodle Winners!
Posted by News Fetcher on December 28 '09 at 11:00 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
This year's Dickerdoodle contest was awesome. You guys are a sick bunch of fuckers. Choosing a top three was no easy task but I've finally done it. First Place goes to Breanne! I have looked at this image probably a hundred times and I still laugh. Something about the expression on the cat's face just kills me. It's like he's not trying to show off or boast. This is his massive dong and you just need to deal with it. If you can't come to terms with his giant shlong that's your problem not his. Second Place goes to Robert! ...

How The Illithid Stole Lolthmas, Part Three
Posted by News Fetcher on December 25 '09 at 12:15 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
I hope that you are having an unambiguously merry Christmas. Or a hopi Schneikel, or a gurd Nachtouph, or whatever they have where you are. I hope that whatever phenomenon best epitomizes your native winterfest is in plentiful supply. The Illithid continues to Steal him some Lolthmas, as can be plainly seen. I'm still coming to terms with the fact that Gabriel (of all people) suggested we do a Seuss parody that takes place in the Underdark. Oh, I'll take it. Hell yes. I'm no dummy. But sometimes, not every day, but often, I do wonder where this greasy Doppelganger ...
