Cyber Monday Update
Posted by News Fetcher on December 01 '09 at 11:00 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
I will usually mention new items when they pop up in the store but I try not to make big buy our stuff posts more than once or twice a year. I made my big Cyber Monday post yesterday and forgot to point out the promotion we had going on. So if you hit the store yesterday you were able to take advantage of our buy 2 shirts get a third shirt free deal. As of midnight last night we changed that. If you check it out today you can try our new promotion. A purchase of $50 or more ...

By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
There is a build in Modern Warfare 2 - Tactical Knife, Commando, Marathon, and Lightweight - that we have taken to calling the Witch. They are so called because this nefarious combination results in half-human abominations that can a) run faster than normal, forever, b) fall without damage, and c) teleport to targets killing them instantly. If you're wondering what something like this is doing in a "shooter," whose name ostensibly delineates the standard mode of interaction, well, let us know what you come up with. We're thinking about starting a support group. Looking at the rest of the game, ...

Maybe you preferred the fairy-tale world of the Lookouts. Well we've got you covered. What about Jim Darkmagic i hear you shouting. Don't worry, we've got him too! Need something for the PA ...

First Party
Posted by News Fetcher on November 28 '09 at 11:30 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
We've been talking about First Party for a long time and yesterday the site finally went live. We love making T-shirts and we have no intention of stopping, but not everyone can, or wants to wear T-shirts all the time. Some of you might work in an office during the day or maybe you just want something a little classier in the closet. Honestly First Party isn't going to be for everyone. My guess is that some of you guys are gonna hit the site and scratch your heads. If that's the case it's just not for you and that's ...

Retales, Part Two
Posted by News Fetcher on November 27 '09 at 02:45 PM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
Here's the second (and final) strip retelling Gabriel's harrowing past as a retail aggressor. I hope the writing process for this strip makes it into the show at some point, or at any rate that it is at the very least revealed, because he lays the whole scenario bare. These dark visions may even bring him here, to the front page, to relate some measure of his crystallized fear. By hour one hundred and thirty-five, Desert Bus had gathered well over a hundred thousand dollars. As in, dollars. Outside of the occasional link - and a donation every now and ...

Child's Play Update!
Posted by News Fetcher on November 27 '09 at 02:30 PM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
If my life was a newspaper you could say that these two comics were "ripped from the headlines". I still have flash backs about my time at Toys R Us and Circuit City. I saw grown women get into fist fights over Tickle Me Elmo. I was cursed out on Christmas Eve for not having Holiday Barbie when the stupid thing had been sold out since June, and just like the comic I've been told a million times to "check in the back." It was my job to take the things that were in the back and put them in ...

Posted by News Fetcher on November 25 '09 at 10:30 PM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
The Child's Play charity dinner and auction is coming up on December 8th and we only have 45 tickets left. If you'd like to attend you should hit the Child's Play site right away and pick up your tickets. This is always and amazing night and obviously it's for a very good cause. We'll start the evening with some mingling and hours-devours. There will be a silent auction during this phase so you can walk around and bid on all kinds of great stuff. Then we'll move to the dinner and live auction. Tycho and will be your MC's as ...

Posted by News Fetcher on November 25 '09 at 03:45 PM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
I tend not to reveal my deepest hopes, lest they be stolen from me by the universe. Now, on the cusp of its realization, perhaps I am allowed: I do indulge in the occasional fantasy. Let me show you them. It was my hope that, this year, the Desert Bus crew would be able to top their combined take for their first two years in operation. Five days in, we're only a couple thousand away from that frightful sum. This is shocking, invigorating, et cetera. What is the endgame here, people? A drive in 2013, where you donate a million ...

Retales, Part One
Posted by News Fetcher on November 25 '09 at 11:15 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
Gabriel still gets the shivers when entering the Holiday Retail environment, as shellshocked memories begin to leach from his brain. He is gripped by a kind of solidarity with the drudges who stock the infinite shelves, in whose ears splendid carols are warped into the crushed and tenebrous mulch of a funeral march. There's two strips total on this theme, one for today and another for Friday. It's something we could do for weeks if necessary, so numerous are the tales of his abuse at the hands of the consumer, but this should be sufficient for now. There was a ...

PA Reality Show!
Posted by News Fetcher on November 23 '09 at 12:30 PM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
I have exciting news to share! A while back we talked about a reality show based on life here at Penny Arcade. It was just something we kicked around during a podcast but the idea stuck with us. We kept getting mail from people saying that this was actually something they'd be interested in. Eventually we decided to partner with 2 Player Productions and actually do it. So now we have camera guys here in the office filming us make strips, play game and eat lunch. They also followed us around during PAX and they will be at the CP ...

Delicioso

By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
In the same way that professional skateboarders can approach Tony Hawk Ride and extract something resembling a game, people who are Italian are in a position to discern the dialogue and plot of Assassin's Creed II without resorting to deep menus or taking copious notes. This is what something like ninety percent of the game sounds like to a non-speaker: an amalgamation of intercepted food court communiques. Because Modern Warfare 2 is "controversial," for a variety of reasons, the only manner in which serious writers may refer to it is by analyzing "that level" or by raising one's voice in ...

Child's Play & Dbus
Posted by News Fetcher on November 21 '09 at 08:15 PM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
The exact total is$542,107.01 - a jump of just over eighty-six thousand over last week's figure. We'll take it, certainly. But I warn you: my palm is poised over the knob labeled Stirring Rhetoric. I can crank this mode like you would not believe. Act Accordingly. Desert Bus 2009 is currently underway, and even though they've got over twenty-five thousand in donations and a mind-shredding one hundred and tenhoursof that awful thing to play, they pegged it at over seventy thousand last year - so we've got some work to do. I did mine earlier, swinging ...

The Fullness Of Time
Posted by News Fetcher on November 20 '09 at 11:15 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
New Super Mario Brothers Wii is marriage poison. I wouldn't play this game with any person you want to see again. In its multiplayer interpretation, which I suggest be referred to as "Divorce Mode," choreographing your platform jumps in a way that does not interfere with another person's basic game interactions can be quite difficult - particularly in portions where player movement itself can kill teammates while you progress the level, or when the natural scroll of the camera can kill those who lag behind. One of these two things is almost always happening, though. So hm. That is ...

Gyromancer
Posted by News Fetcher on November 18 '09 at 08:15 PM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
I was very excited about Gyromancer and I decided to grab it on the PC since I saw it right there in Steam when I went to play Torchlight. I remember now why I quit playing games on the PC. I installed the game game but when I tried to launch it would fail. I got some ambiguous error report about how the program encountered an error. I tried deleting and re installing the game a few times to see if that did anything. When that didn't work I went and checked all my updates and drivers. My machine was ...

By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
I have to say that we found DJ Hero quite interesting, actually. I understand that it didn't sell particularly well, but that's never been an especially valid barometer of aesthetics. It's significant to me that the music you're playing in the game is new, purpose-built material. I've heard that the track list is one of the main problems with this experiment, but I'm prepared to call that perspective devilry - I don't see any value in equivocation. Some songs are mixed more than once, and this results in diminished satisfaction, but if after a few half-hearted scratches you've determined that ...
