Foxconn International Removed From Hang Seng Index
Posted by News Fetcher on June 07 '11 at 07:00 AM
By timothy from Slashdot's see-fellas-there's-this-thing-called-goodwill department:
Tasha26 writes "After the suicides and fatal explosion, the Taiwanese company Foxconn now faces losing its blue-chip status. Falling prices for smartphones, laptops, tablets and other gadgets and rising wages in China have undermined Foxconn's financial performance. The company lost $220m (£135m) in 2010. Foxconn International will be removed from Hong Kong's benchmark Hang Seng index and be replaced by insurer AIA and nappy maker Hengan. The two new entrants use China both as a source of cheap labour and as a market for their product, a switch which Foxconn is now considering."

Patented Gestures Detailed
Posted by News Fetcher on June 07 '11 at 06:15 AM
By CmdrTaco from Slashdot's all-hail-the-listicle department:
An anonymous reader writes "Annalee Newitz wrote a fresh/interesting/informative piece on the io9 site about 10 Gestures that are already patented; unsurprisingly by the likes of Apple, Microsoft and Nintendo. But it's the other patent holders on the list that seem more interesting to me: Xerox, Lucent, Palm and lesser known Gesturetek have very broad patents for this tech."

iOS 5 Jailbroken
Posted by News Fetcher on June 07 '11 at 05:45 AM
By CmdrTaco from Slashdot's ahead-of-the-curve department:
Mightee writes "MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev Team has posted some pictures on his twitter account, confirming the jailbreak works fine on iOS 5, but of course it is limited to tethered boot only, which means you will have to connect it to your computer on every reboot. According to his initial testing, Cydia appears to be working just fine on his jailbroken 4th-geniPod touch, he managed to install SSHing utility app called iSSH successfully, which can be seen in one of the screenshots below."

RSA Admits SecurID Tokens Have Been Compromised
Posted by News Fetcher on June 07 '11 at 05:15 AM
By CmdrTaco from Slashdot's hey-i-have-one-of-those department:
A few months ago, RSA Servers were hacked, and a few weeks ago Duped tokens were used to hack Lockheed-Martin. Well today
Orome1 writes "RSA has finally admitted publicly that the March breach into its systems has resulted in the compromise of their SecurID two-factor authentication tokens. The admission comes in the wake of cyber intrusions into the networks of three US military contractors: Lockheed Martin, L-3 Communications and Northrop Grumman — one of them confirmed by the company, others hinted at by internal warnings and unusual domain name and password reset process."

Siemens SCADA Flaws To Be Disclosed At Black Hat
Posted by News Fetcher on June 07 '11 at 04:30 AM
By timothy from Slashdot's infra-infrastructure department:
itwbennett writes "In May, NSS Labs Researcher Dillon Beresford pulled out of a Dallas hacking conference at the last minute when Siemens was unable to fix problems he'd found in the firmware of its S7 programmable logic controller. Now NSS Labs CEO Rick Moy says Beresford is rescheduled to deliver his talk at Black Hat, which runs Aug. 2-3. Beresford has discovered six vulnerabilities in the S7 that 'allow an attacker to have complete control of the device,' Moy said. Devices like the S7 do things such as control how fast a turbine spins or open gates on dams."

Russian President: Time To Reform Copyright
Posted by News Fetcher on June 07 '11 at 03:00 AM
By timothy from Slashdot's kalashnikov-mashup department:
An anonymous reader writes "While most of the rest of the world keeps ratcheting up copyright laws by increasing enforcement and terms, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev appears to be going in the other direction. He's now proposing that Russia build Creative Commons-style open and free licenses directly into Russian copyright law. This comes just a few days after he also chided other G8 leaders for their antiquated views on copyright."

By timothy from Slashdot's to-those-who-wait department:
azop writes "Almost a year ago Slashdot covered the story of a MPEG-4 multiple input capture card with a GPL Video4Linux licensed driver. Earlier this year, Ben Collins added H.264 support into the solo6x10 Video4Linux2 GPL driver. The H.264 PCIe cards are finally released and shipping to customers. The new cards support faster frame rates and sport a PCIe interface. The driver is available for forkin' on Github."

New Tool Shows Would-Be Emailers If You're Swamped
Posted by News Fetcher on June 06 '11 at 09:15 PM
By timothy from Slashdot's my-dad-has-400k-messages-in-his-inbox department:
alphadogg writes "A Georgia Tech researcher is taking aim at email overload with a new tool that shows people thinking about messaging you just how swamped your Gmail account is, in real time. Assistant Professor of Computing Eric Gilbert's research project, taking the form of the freely available 'Courteous.ly' service, which does require you to allow access to your email account (initially the service only works with Gmail). 'Courteous.ly helps manage expectations and lets people choose to send mail when it's best for you,' he says." This sounds like an ugly thing to game, though -- it seems like a good way to keep score in a mailbombing.

Has iTunes Been Hacked?
Posted by News Fetcher on June 06 '11 at 06:45 PM
By Soulskill from Slashdot's missony-loves-company department:
An anonymous reader writes "Betanews has a series of articles talking about an apparent hack in iTunes that has resulted in fraudulent charges for some users involving Sega's Kingdom Conquest game. The reports start with a personal account from reporter Ed Oswald, who was a victim of the hack itself. The next story adds reports from readers, and the most recent story adds additional reports, with Oswald saying the number of reports received are in the 'dozens.' Apple has yet to confirm the existence of a hack, although reports have appeared on Sega's own support forums, Apple discussion boards, and through other news outlets."

Schema.org — Google, Microsoft and Yahoo! Agree On Markup Vocabulary
Posted by News Fetcher on June 06 '11 at 04:45 PM
By Soulskill from Slashdot's executive-decision department:
aabelro writes "Google, Microsoft and Yahoo! have decided to propose a common markup vocabulary, Schema.org, based on the Microdata format, simplifying the job of webmasters who want to give meaning to their web pages' content."
Manu Sporny, chair of the W3C group that created RDFa, added his (personal) dissenting opinion about Schema, calling it a 'false choice,' and saying, "The entire Web community should decide which features should be supported – not just Microsoft or Google or Yahoo."

Ask Slashdot: Best Adventure Game To Start With?

By Soulskill from Slashdot's getting-them-hooked-early department:
canolecaptain writes "One of my daughters (10 years old) has become interested in adventure games, and started playing Fate. It's been awhile since I've had time to play this type of game (since the Diablo 2 days), and I'd like to know what Slashdotters thought would be the best set of adventure games to start her on (PC preferred). Nothing too scary yet, so unfortunately, Diablo is out for the time being. I'd prefer one with multi-player so that we could quest together on ocassion."

How To Succeed In IT Without Really Trying
Posted by News Fetcher on June 06 '11 at 03:15 PM
By Soulskill from Slashdot's what-would-you-say-ya-do-here department:
snydeq writes "Deep End's Paul Venezia discusses the two ways to succeed in IT: through proficiency and hard work, a road that often leads to unending servitude, or the other way; with little effort or proficiency at all. 'I hate to say this, but a number of people in IT positions work harder to make it seem like they're busy as beavers than doing actual work. Quite often this dysfunction starts at the top: When an IT manager doesn't know the technology very well, he or she may hire folks who have no idea what their job is other than to show up every day and answer the occasional email, passing questions along to others with more technical abilities, or to their contacts at the various hardware and software vendors. People like these populate many consulting companies. They rely almost completely on contractors to perform the actual work, serving as remote hands in a real crisis and as part of a phone tree for less pressing issues.'"

MIT Develops Fast Charging Liquid Flow Batteries
Posted by News Fetcher on June 06 '11 at 02:30 PM
By Soulskill from Slashdot's now-if-only-we-could-run-it-on-oil department:
An anonymous reader sends this from the MIT News office:
"A radically new approach to the design of batteries, developed by researchers at MIT, could provide a lightweight and inexpensive alternative to existing batteries for electric vehicles and the power grid. The technology could even make 'refueling' such batteries as quick and easy as pumping gas into a conventional car (abstract). The new battery relies on an innovative architecture called a semi-solid flow cell, in which solid particles are suspended in a carrier liquid and pumped through the system. In this design, the battery’s active components — the positive and negative electrodes, or cathodes and anodes — are composed of particles suspended in a liquid electrolyte. These two different suspensions are pumped through systems separated by a filter, such as a thin porous membrane."

25% of US Hackers Are FBI/CIA Informers
Posted by News Fetcher on June 06 '11 at 02:00 PM
By Soulskill from Slashdot's trading-hats department:
An anonymous reader writes "The Guardian reports that the FBI and CIA have 'persuaded' up to 25% of US hackers to 'work' for them. 'In some cases, popular illegal forums used by cyber criminals as marketplaces for stolen identities and credit card numbers have been run by hacker turncoats acting as FBI moles. In others, undercover FBI agents posing as "carders" – hackers specialising in ID theft – have themselves taken over the management of crime forums, using the intelligence gathered to put dozens of people behind bars. ... The best-known example of the phenomenon is Adrian Lamo, a convicted hacker who turned informant on Bradley Manning, who is suspected of passing secret documents to WikiLeaks.' What implications does this hold for privacy? Or is it just good work by the authorities?"
As you may have guessed, the estimate appears to be based only on the number of black hats, rather than all hackers.

Chinese Paper Warns Google May Pay Price For Hacking Claims
Posted by News Fetcher on June 06 '11 at 12:30 PM
By Soulskill from Slashdot's i-bet-google-has-a-better-military-than-china department:
suraj.sun writes with this excerpt from a Reuters report:
"Google has become a 'political tool' vilifying the Chinese government, an official Beijing newspaper said on Monday, warning that the US internet giant's statements about hacking attacks traced to China could hurt its business. The tough warning appeared in the overseas edition of the People's Daily, the leading newspaper of China's ruling Communist Party, indicating that political tensions between the United States and China over Internet security could linger. Last week, Google said it had broken up an effort to steal the passwords of hundreds of Google email account holders, including US government officials, Chinese human rights advocates and journalists. It said the attacks appeared to come from China."

Microsoft Announces Halo 4, TV For Xbox Live, Kinect Star Wars
Posted by News Fetcher on June 06 '11 at 11:45 AM
By Soulskill from Slashdot's better-than-last-year department:
Today Microsoft held their E3 press conference, announcing a number of major new games and services for the Xbox 360 platform. Halo 4 was briefly revealed, and is currently planned for a holiday 2012 launch. In addition, the original Halo is getting an HD remake. Smash indie hit Minecraft will be coming to the 360 this winter, with support for Kinect. In fact, there is a huge push from many game-makers to bring Kinect integration to the next level — from a new Fable game where you can use your hands to cast spells, to EA Sports titles, to Kinect Star Wars. Topping it off is an update to Xbox Live which will bring live TV to the console (including DVR functions), controllable by voice through Kinect. YouTube and voice search through Bing are coming as well. The update is planned for this fall. Those interested can catch a video of the press conference, which includes all the relevant game trailers, at G4TV.

New Projects Use Phone Data To Track Big Cities' Mass Transit Use
Posted by News Fetcher on June 06 '11 at 10:45 AM
By timothy from Slashdot's carry-on-citizens department:
An anonymous reader points out a New York Times article about a traffic analysis program that
"'works by taking note of which cellphone tower a phone is communicating with. It then looks for disruptions in service followed by significant changes in location. If a phone located near Times Square suddenly loses service and reconnects at Prince Street and Broadway 15 minutes later, then it has almost certainly traveled there using the N or R trains.' In another interesting twist, the article briefly notes, 'The system will also include an experiment that uses phones' microphones to sense when riders are on buses.'" The article also mentions a similar project to track buses and trains in Los Angeles. .
