More Thornwatch Art
Posted by News Fetcher on September 29 '16 at 03:01 PM
By Gabe@penny-arcade.com (Gabe) from Penny Arcade:
The big bad monster in the Thornwatch print and play is the Swamp Choir. I thought I’d share some of the progress pics I took while I was drawing it. Rodney said he was looking for a monster with multiple heads. So I went to work on the art side of it. I did a few different sketched but this is the one I really liked. I cooked up this crazy four headed turtle and sent it over to Tycho. He came back with the name Swamp Choir and went to work on the lore while I started inking. As I was inking Tycho kept sending me info about this thing. How the different heads sing songs to lure…

Want to work on PAX?
Posted by News Fetcher on September 28 '16 at 02:01 PM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
There are a couple opportunities to PAX it up with our partner ReedPOP. Here are two jobs in Norwalk, Connecticut, which you should absolutely check out: PAX Content Manager PAX Content Coordinator What is the difference between a Content Manager and a Content Coordinator? Good question; it’s all in the links. This next job is not in Norwalk, CT. In fact it is very far away from there, because it is for PAX Aus (which is fast approaching and you should buy tickets!): PAX Aus Sales Manager (Sydney) Let’s make some shows. (CW)TB

Success And Its Opposite
Posted by News Fetcher on September 28 '16 at 10:01 AM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
Gabe is playing an Xbox game at home, alone, and without compulsion - specifically, Forza Horizon 3. I don’t know what caused this to happen, but it’s happening and we have to deal with that. Specifically, I have to deal with that. I grabbed a copy after being coated in his effusions, and with a jaunty spirit, named my international racing mogul Sloth. In my mind I can see his business card, and underneath where it says Sloth is a curl of italicized cursive that says “It’s Ironic.” I want to know way, way more before I talk about it, but the…

Call For PAX South Enforcers!
Posted by News Fetcher on September 26 '16 at 04:30 PM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
PAX Aus fast approaches, but there is another. As one of the ancient pillars of PAX, the Enforcers are one of the mystic elements that separate it from other shows - and you can literally embody this difference. Check out the Enforcer page for South and, thus inspired, take a moment to fill out the application. Here’s some Qs, with the As placed in close proximity: Q: Do Enforcers get a free pass? A: Yes! Also a neat staff shirt. Q: Do Enforcers get paid? A: Yes! Q: How many days/hours would I have to work? A: Enforcers must commit to working a minimum of one one 5-6…

The Problem Palace
Posted by News Fetcher on September 26 '16 at 09:40 AM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
I never waver on whether a computer is the best place to play games; that’s a given for me. Consoles will always be like a weird friend of Gabriel’s I am forced to endure. Where I do occasionally wander, where my position does occasionally vibrate ever so slightly, is how much I like engaging in Satanic rituals as a prefix to my leisure activities. It’s never going to be zero. I’m always going to exhort Satan and his Demonic Lieutenants to inhabit the Ritual Box. And Gabriel wants to give me shit or whatever because he just pushes a button and…

I had fun with my Xbox!
Posted by News Fetcher on September 26 '16 at 09:40 AM
By Gabe@penny-arcade.com (Gabe) from Penny Arcade:
I like to give Tycho a hard time about PC games but I actually spent some time this weekend playing on mine. I do not have a dedicated place to play PC games and I think that’s part of the problem. I spent some time this weekend working on resolving this problem. For my birthday on Sunday I got a Razer Turret. It’s a little wireless keyboard that is built into a lap desk. It also comes with a mouse to use along with it and both of them fit into a slick charging station when not in use. I hooked my laptop up to the TV and sat back with the keyboard and mouse on the couch. I played…

Part Of This Complete Breakfast
Posted by News Fetcher on September 23 '16 at 11:31 AM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
I’m working through Destiny’s Rise of Iron campaign, as one does, shoveling savory collectibles directly into my craw. I saw Gabe in orbit last night and thought it might be nice to wrap things up with another human; what wasn’t immediately clear at the time was that he was upstairs watching Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping and not actually there. Our ships wobbled in intimate proximity for a long while; no words were said. I feel like there’s a metaphor here. Or maybe a literal? I’m in that dangerous, restless period between games, what we…

Pals
Posted by News Fetcher on September 21 '16 at 12:12 PM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
I had played Paladins at an earlier point in its development, a couple months ago I believe, and while Overwatch was definitely front of mind as a character shooter for some reason I pulled something else out of it - like a mad sommelier warbling about “catcher’s mitts” and “seafoam,” I was catching hints of WoW Battlegrounds, Tribes, and peppercorn. Because of my sophisticated palate, you see. Grob Grob has another position, the position of people generally, which is that Paladins is Overwatch not with the serial numbers filed off, but with the…

I’ve been making lots of stuff
Posted by News Fetcher on September 21 '16 at 10:53 AM
By Gabe@penny-arcade.com (Gabe) from Penny Arcade:
I don’t know about you all, but my family had a blast playing Rise of Iron last night. I had to make Kara promise not to do anymore story missions until I get home from work. My son Gabe was worried and asked if his Mom and I planned on doing quests after he went to bed. It was clear he thought this would be unfair. I smiled, messed up his hair and said “of course we are son.” One of the best parts of my job is getting to work with developers on games I love. Before PAX I designed a set of Destiny Pinny Arcade pins and they were for sale during the show at the Bungie…

Minimalism
Posted by News Fetcher on September 19 '16 at 11:05 AM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
I feel like there has to be a voice for that position; mine will suffice for now, even if it is a fragmentary enunciation of my coordinate. Sorry; if I haven’t written all weekend, my initial paragraphs come out like this. It’s like a clearing of the throat. I’ve mentioned something Warren Spector said at a PAX keynote many times - that art forms are either embraced by the mainstream, or they are annihilated. I don’t think it’s wrong, necessarily, but this is a phrase which creates the opposing battle lines and arrays them for war. …

Gabz was talking to his dadz the other day, and it goes like this a lot. At root, his father was party to the manufacture of a creature whose most ordinary mode of operation is completely alien to a person like himself, one who excelled in the doing of useful things. It reminds me of when I had the incredible opportunity to talk with Amy Hennig at PAX - and by “talk with” I mean “bask in the radiance of.” We are, at root, people who hear voices. When I write, and when she writes, because we’ve talked about this exact thing, we are hearing and…

Thornwatch art update
Posted by News Fetcher on September 16 '16 at 09:43 AM
By Gabe@penny-arcade.com (Gabe) from Penny Arcade:
It was important to us that we get a print and play out so that folks could check out the game. I was nervous about this because while I felt like the mechanics were solid, the art still had a long way to go. I’m glad that people have been downloading the print and play and enjoying the game but it’s also important to me that you all get an idea of what I intend for the final game to actually look like. Thornwatch is designed to feel like you’re playing through a graphic novel and so obviously the artwork is going to be a huge part of the experience. With that in mind I wanted to show…
