The Field Of Battle
Posted by News Fetcher on November 11 '16 at 11:14 AM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
The thing that must be contended with in any discussion of Battlefield is this: Battlefield is very Battlefieldy. You can’t say I’m wrong. I turned the word itself into an adjective that describes itself, a kind of lexical judo that puts would-be challengers on the fucking mat. This is precisely the type of jelly one can’t prepare for. But it’s also just, like, true. There are games like Call of Duty, but I don’t think there are games “like” Battlefield. What it trades for its scale and spectacle is an infantry experience…

The Cubes Win
Posted by News Fetcher on November 09 '16 at 01:02 PM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
We posit an artifact in today’s strip, one of great power for the writer. Because I am who I am, of course I know the rest of the sides on the Writer’s Dice. One dice goes: Fish, Bird, Wizard, Robot, Dragon, and Bug, while the other one goes Guys, Ladies, Kids, Lizards, Ghosts, and Plants. It was mostly nonsense, like the lion’s share of what we get up to, but now that I think about it these devices are surprisingly robust. For example, it’s hard not to think that James Patterson‘s Maximum Ride might have been generated by a roll of the dice…

The Wagers Of Sin
Posted by News Fetcher on November 07 '16 at 02:41 PM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
Here’s the strip we did for Wednesday’s Make-A-Strip panel, concerning Gabriel’s legitimately weird gambling prowess. It seems like you couldn’t really have gambling “prowess.” It seems like a game with a very specific outcome and what he does in these places shouldn’t be happening. If he gets anywhere near a computer, the machine ceases to be a computer at all; but when he gets near a table, pit bosses start to sweat from their necks and they don’t know why. I used to think I was good at Blackjack, but after this…

I’m completely obsessed with Westworld. There are a lot of articles about Westworld, but I don’t read them; I only talk to my friends about it. I know enough from the headlines out barking for their wares inside that HBO has essentially weaponized the thinkpiece as a modus of self-promotion. But how could you not write about it, is my question. We’re constantly hearing about the eternal, whirling dangers of games aping cinema, or not being willing to accept that they exist in the continuum of storytelling and thus have much to learn from it, or being…

PAX Aus Merch Banner
Posted by News Fetcher on November 03 '16 at 09:21 AM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
Why am I awake at 2:43 in the morning, when I SHOULD be asleep? Ask fucking Firaxis, they’ll tell you. They’ll tell you that, in collaboration with Satan the Devil, they made an electronic prison for the mind. But I managed to escape long enough to deliver unto you a vision of incredible merchandise, all of which can be clicked to see larger versions: (CW)TB (but please, call me The Thunderbolt Of The North)

I fly enough now that anything below five hours or so I don’t even feel. There are flights I like less than others. Flying down into the desert bowl of Las Vegas is generally more exciting than I’d like. “Exciting” in this case meaning that it’s easy to imagine the plane becoming two smaller, useless un-planes by virtue of whatever forces are making the plane behave in what Jane Austen might have called an “ungentleman-like manner.” Gabriel wasn’t able to make the trip to Australia last year because a doctor said “I…

Stitches on Kickstarter

By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
Halloween seems like the right day to push a game where you make monsters out of other monster parts and then use those monsters to fight another, weirder monster. I know these guys, but don’t let that put you off: they’re very reasonable, possibly even good people. (CW)TB

Prioritas
Posted by News Fetcher on October 31 '16 at 11:41 AM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
Civilization VI is out, which you might know already, because you have become fused with your computer over the last week or so and are reading this post as data shunted directly into your visual cortex. We had a Scout par excellence that eventually met his end in the northeast, at the hands of Gilgamesh if I recall correctly, and we discovered Drama and Poetry close enough to his death that we made his demise the impetus for the creation of these art forms. The societal grief was too great to be contained and so art was required. This is one reason to play Civilization, all by…

Pinny Arcade: PAX Aus Pin Quest!
Posted by News Fetcher on October 28 '16 at 01:32 PM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
I usually don’t get to put up the Pin Quest, but Gabe is drawing like two weeks of comics to get ready for PAX Aus so I’ve got the tiller. I’m cranked, though, because this year is a bumper crop for Aus pins, alongside what might be the coolest show set yet, care of Camp Weedonwantcha‘s Katie Rice! Alright, let’s get down to business. PARTNER PINS Alienware 20th Anniversary [Alienware] “Giving out pins at the booth (Stand 1730) via on-stand competitions and through the Alienware Live Twitch channel.” Albert and Hackernet…

Child’s Play Charity Dinner & Auction
Posted by News Fetcher on October 28 '16 at 01:32 PM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
It’s a great time, as always; individual tickets for the event can be secured here, while full table sponsorships can be investigated here. For auction items, I just put myself in to be someone’s person Coffee Roaster for a year. I have every intention of including legitimately insufferable coffee facts with each delivery. Do you have anything to offer up for the auction, something we might transform into healing light for somebody? Let us know at the form here; the last day for such offers is November 30th. (CW)TB

I don’t know much about Titanfall 2 yet, other than the fact that it is clearly a romance. In my travels I often encounter subcultures or representatives of subcultures with unique avenues of titillation. I don’t have the receptors for this, I literally feel nothing when I picture it, but I have to imagine that being enveloped inside a steel man is probably doin’ something for somebody. I’m sure for them it’s like, “God damn. Finally.” And then they press and hold the Square or X button over and over and over. Stephen…

By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
2:00pm is becoming the usual time, it seems like; let’s stick with it. We’ll be in the air for Australia next Wednesday, so this’ll be the last regular one for a bit. After Aus, let’s get this streaming thing codified into a fully operational battlestation. (CW)TB
