Childish Gambito
Posted by News Fetcher on September 07 '18 at 11:21 AM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
Most of the levels I’ve gained since the Forsaken expansion are from Gambit. It’s early days for the mode, which is the part I like generally for new systems, where the continents have not yet cooled and it’s possible to succeed with great communication as opposed to Raid-like mechanical rigor. I came around to Crucible in D2, and I may be completely alone in thinking that four players per side makes for a far more legible, more skill based, less swingy battle. But that’s not what I’m here to talk about - I only mention it because it is very, very…

Bring The Heat

By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
I don’t know if he actually brought it home or not. I do know that he is a different person when he’s wearing it. There’s something about him raising up his left hand to tuck back an errant hair that is so out of place it doesn’t even get filed like extra stimuli; it just coats the top of my brain unabsorbed. I have lots of memories that are still condensing out of the show; one that I think is particularly fascinating is that even though so, so many games are there and so, so many people are there, and these two abstract entities commingle in a…

Bring The Heat
Posted by News Fetcher on September 03 '18 at 10:01 AM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
It’s always a novel experience to wake up on Monday and remember that a news post is required. A lot has happened! Holy shit. Uh… Let’s see. We announced our Magic: The Gathering show, The Magic Hour in the fleeting moments before last night’s Acquisitions Incorporated game. That felt novel, also. It’s gonna be a real weird show and I hope that’s alright. I’ll get the trailer up for you when it hits the channel; I think this one made it to the show on a jump drive. If you’re looking to catch last…

The Whirlwind
Posted by News Fetcher on August 31 '18 at 10:00 AM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
It’s day one of PAX Prime as I tip-tap this post on the bed, get some kissy pins on my Lanyard, and make my way down to Benaroya Hall which is much, much too nice a place to have someone like me in it. Our kids are now at a point where they can attend PAX and actually enjoy it, but even beyond that, Noah actually wanted to cosplay the event which Gabriel did his absolute best to enable. We’ve worked with our friend Dani Hartel on a heap of really sophisticated props and costumes, but even an off the shelf 3D printer puts some real power in the hands of the…

The Pre-Post-Game
Posted by News Fetcher on August 29 '18 at 12:40 PM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
It’s hard to project oneself beyond the dense, high wall of experiential variables PAX West represents, but we can try; maybe we can establish a conceptual base camp on the other side and work our way toward it. The form that is currently taking is the list. My list deviates somewhat from his - Spider-Man is a game I would gladly watch him play, I think Insomniac is gonna get the melee to a good spot, but if I’m gonna lose myself in the music, the moment, it’s probably gonna be in Dragon Quest. I have precisely no Dragon Quest pedigree. I have played a couple…

Craniomeganumerophilia

By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
I was talking to JP the other day about Path of Exile, because I knew that was one of his many fascinations and I wanted to get some advice from someone who was maybe a little nuts about this shit. I’d been playing a bit and having a good time, but when you see PoE’s Skill Tree - which you might recognize instinctively as something like Final Fantasy’s sphere grid - you might start to feel a little light headed. He responded to my earnest queries as though I were considering taking up crack. He told me about a site called poe.ninja - clearly these new TLDs…

Cleansing Fire
Posted by News Fetcher on August 28 '18 at 11:20 AM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
When Grickle and I were at Mox Boarding House last week, the Bellevue one, I saw a copy of Disney’s Villainous and felt that familiar shudder that accompanies surprise exposure to a pathogen. We’ve all been subject to this kind of product, or, perhaps I should say, “this kind of product,” by which I mean the hasty, gauche application of a branded lacquer onto an otherwise languid design. You get burned by something like this a couple times and then you institute a policy to protect yourself from this kind of excess. You dig a moat around your heart. …

Royalties
Posted by News Fetcher on August 28 '18 at 11:20 AM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
Gabriel was asking me about a game called Legend of Soulgard, not anything to do with the game proper, but a word he saw constantly in the lexical mist that surrounds the launch of any modern product. He wanted to know what they meant by “mid-core.” I will tell you what I told him: “mid-core” means “a videogame.” The one concession I will make toward Legend of Soulgard is that they did not put two As in Soulgard. That’s to their credit. I would have, even though it’s immoral. This is why I can’t be trusted…

The Undernet

By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
I was following some of the stuff around #DeactiDay, which is a hashtag you would see on Twitter about quitting Twitter. I liked that. I liked that the concept was so nested, so dense. That you needed Twitter, needed there to be such a Thing as Twitter, in order to mount a campaign against Twitter. I’m laughing right now. Gabriel is laughing over on the couch because I just read that sentence to him. But it’s true. I use it for what I use it for. I feel like it’s incumbent on me to make myself available to the people who have made…
