We weren’t trying to write a strip about it, but Gabriel has thoughts and feelings about the way I manage my personal space and thus did a strip materialize. I have a couple Kickstarters coming in actually - my copy of EXCEED Season 2, complete with Carl Swangee from Automata, is just a couple hours south of me. It’s not scheduled to get to my house for another ten days, though, close as it may be, and I can never figure out if this state of affairs is tantalizing slash delicious or if it is maddening. I suspect these concepts are entangled at a very deep level. …

By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
Paladins Strike on phones and tablets is fun as hell. I played a few rounds yesterday with Grickle, and while some of the visual effects aren’t where I like and it forgets to stop playing the machine gun sound sometimes, we can cross these bridges when we come to them. How does it feel? Am I hitting when I think I should be? Does the roster have enough characters with enough interesting toys? This all works. Beyond that I will simply offer my services for a naming pass. They call it a Real-Time Hero Shooter, which calls to mind a Table of Elements designed…

Acquisitions Inc. Battle Royale

By Gabe@penny-arcade.com (Gabe) from Penny Arcade:
One of my favorite things to do with D&D is shoehorn video game mechanics into it. When I heard I was going to get to run the game at PAX East this year my first thought was that I had to do something Battle Royale related. Generally when I run these sorts of games I build lots of elaborate props and I actually had a few ideas about how I could do this using poster board and pre-cut circles of green cellophane. I assembled a little team of people here at PA to help me plan and test the game including Mike Buland, Elyssa Grant, Dabe Alan and Kiko Villasenor but as soon as we started…

By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
I mostly fucked with Gabe about his obsession with Destiny for almost the first year of its operation. Then I got the bug from him just before House of Wolves, caught up, and then ended up doing weekly raids - something I haven’t done since World of Warcraft. That’s why when the second one hit, I went in there strong because I had every faith he was going to be in there. I hurled myself into timed events in an effort to secure rare and gleaming face-hats. Here’s an index of how much I played: I played so much that I actually got “not bad”…

Hogwash

By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
In the upper right hand corner of the screen in Hogwarts Mystery you can see the three distinct currencies, the Satanic Anti-Trinity, that indicate we have entered the Arcade of the Damned. Harry Potter is for Ronia whatever Star Wars was for my generation, there’s nothing she would want more than this game. But they’re going to give her a choice between watching her character get choked out by a vine for a couple hours or asking her dad for money, which she will definitely get. I wish there were another way for her to check out this story, but they don’t…

A Pan-Dimensional Shuriken
Posted by News Fetcher on April 27 '18 at 02:20 PM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
It’s possible that I saw it under the worst possible conditions - in the tiny screen on the back of the airplane seat in front of me - but the last Avengers movie is one of my least favorite films of all time. It also mostly annihilated Joss Whedon’s career, apparently, so maybe I’m not alone in that assessment. I felt the same watching it as I do whenever I see somebody post something from Rich Russian Kids or something. You had all this money, and that’s what you did with it? I don’t think the new one will be like that. There’s…

I Have A Mouth And I Can Scream With It
Posted by News Fetcher on April 25 '18 at 10:21 AM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
There is a lot to like about Labo, which is firmly indicated by the amount of pixels emitted in its praise. The thing that excites me the most is that the first two boxes have the subtitle Toy-Con 1 and Toy-Con 2. What I want more than anything is a Toy-Con to be followed by more and more numbers. We have submitted a possible Toy-Con 3 option but we’re easy; it doesn’t have to be exactly like this but it’s one idea and you’re welcome to it. There’s a division of “labo” at my house, and I don’t know if its common. I…

Comet Inducing

By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
I’m good on comet shit, thanks. I’m a position to know what the margins are like on enthusiast media properties, and so I know that it’s incumbent on them to beat the shit out of whatever is getting views, but it’s lead to a state of affairs where the stats are functionally writing the content and it looks it. The only upside I can think of it is that maybe the algorithm is sentient and is consciously manipulating humanity toward some end we can’t project. That’s how far out I have to get to validate this reality. Nintendo Labo dominated our…

The Net Serpent
Posted by News Fetcher on April 20 '18 at 10:21 AM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
People often talk about the “dadification” of games, which I suspect is at least partially a function of a workforce that is aging and a medium that is aging with it. I mean aging in the sense of a casked liquor. I don’t mean aging in demonstrable progression of decrepitude sense, but know this: the grave awaits us all. Purely in terms of time spent there, it’s not even a contest; the tomb is the truest home of man. Along with this dadification comes various representations of young people, which is a very tough business. It’s not…

Fortuitous

By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
We actually wrote this comic before it was announced that the guided missile was being shelved indefinitely. They have a pretty aggressive schedule over there. I was talking to Jeff Kalles, who you might remember as Jeff No-Magic from Acquisitions Incorporated, about it yesterday. The man is a Project Manager just, like, in his blood, and to hear him tell it managing the kind of seismic success a game like Fortnite is experiencing is an incredibly sophisticated challenge. There’s always gonna be the “Good problem to have,” wink-nudge contingent, and…
