Dusk City Outlaws
Posted by News Fetcher on February 27 '17 at 12:51 PM
By Gabe@penny-arcade.com (Gabe) from Penny Arcade:
I have a whole new appreciation for the art of game design after watching Rodney Thompson and Mike Selinker inspect and construct Thornwatch. I knew I had a cool idea and some genuinely new mechanics but I had hit a wall. Rodney came in and looked at what I had done and saw all the little problems, but more importantly he saw what I wanted the game to do. He cut out old rules that only hurt that game and built new rules to support the Thornwatch I wanted. When Rodney isn’t working at Bungie or helping me design Thornwatch, it turns out he is making his own game! Tycho and I…

Unlucky

By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
You’ll be playing Horizon: Zero Dawn soon enough here, but since you need to manufacture practically every shot you fire from your weapons, it might be worth keeping an eye on what you’re putting out. Sony’s had fairly strenuous limitations on streaming the product, much more strenuous than you might think for a game whose reviews came out a week ago and are all incredible. I asked them, actually, because I wanted to stream it last Wednesday with Mr. Gribbz. Alas; there are authentic mysteries here, most people still don’t know much about the game,…

The Banner Saga 3 Promotion Thingy
Posted by News Fetcher on February 24 '17 at 02:43 PM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
Hey! I backed Banner Saga hard, like, so hard that I got to write a Godstone for the sequel and create an item and stuff. I was asked to help with a promotion for The Banner Saga 3, and I know the second one was a rough ride for the studio so I said yes several times in rapid succession. They said that I could make three to five items for Banner Saga 3, but if I could make five items instead of three, why wouldn’t I do that? So let’s go with five. Also: Twitch Prime is setting up a thing where members can download the original Banner Saga for free through…

Horizon: Zero Dawn comes out on the 28th here in the States, and March 1st in Europe. My feeling is that you should buy it. The introduction has a few very interesting moments, and my daughter Ronia was there for all of them; when the game begins, there any many games it could be. I like the one that it chooses, but they take their time to let things breathe in this unformed space. They allow the center to bake through. Horizon is clung-to by incredibly strange ideas; Ronia doesn’t know much about the game, other than the fact that the protagonist looks like…

Update On That Stolen PS4 in New Zealand
Posted by News Fetcher on February 22 '17 at 02:47 PM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
A torrent of generosity from the Internet washed the whole situation away, essentially - but there was an opportunity to make a lasting improvement to their Play Therapy department by supporting the playrooms and stock a new teen room they’d planned. Travis over at Child’s Play did a write up that includes the overwhelemed response from the hospital; you can find it all here. (CW)TB

Return Of The Jeed
Posted by News Fetcher on February 22 '17 at 11:34 AM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
I like Star Wars, not as much as some but I do like it; there’s always new words in there for me to learn. “The Last Jedi,” as a piece of nomenclature in English, has a lot of potential weight and finality to it because of how “the” works. “The” abuts singular or plural nouns, and Jedi can refer to one or more completely mad star wizards. It is ambiguity adorned with uncertain, enigmatic fixin’s; you’re getting it coming and going. When versions of the movie’s title came out translated into other languages,…

A Big, Big Love
Posted by News Fetcher on February 20 '17 at 12:30 PM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
I know that it totally looks like something we already have a mental construct for, one hundred percent, but it’s not actually that. The official description for Gigantic calls it a MOBA, which, I mean… hm. I don’t think that’s what this is. I’m not just being fastidious. That is to say, I’m definitely being fastidious, but it’s not the only thing. This came up with Overwatch: if the “classes” you can play as are different characters, that’s not sufficient. Gigantic is closer to the traditional model, with…

GTFOOH

By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
He’s up to his ass in Thornwatch shit, watchin’ them thornz, but I was able to get him over to watch me lose a few times, which is really all I wanted. All I needed! Then he can go. I think my timing on this one was just wrong; I need to remember that he is like the MCP. In many ways, obviously, but chiefly in that he is surrounded by a whirling shield, and cultural projectiles must be carefully timed to pass through. A thousand years ago, when webcomic was written as two words, there was a style of comic called “Two Guys On A Couch.” This…

The Latest Fissure

By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
I’m always telling him to check out my shit, and he’s always telling me to check out his; the joke is that we don’t really do that. But I think I’m gonna look at his “whatever it is” this time and actually try to understand it. My thing right now is Duelyst again, which he played a ways back and then bounced off of it, which I don’t think is actually evidence of a personal failing because it was a different game back then. Also, I messed up during that crucial initial phase; I came on too strong, I pushed him into it. I know…

Acquisitions Incorporated Shirts + Valentine Available Now!
Posted by News Fetcher on February 14 '17 at 10:42 AM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
Hey! The shirts I was telling you about just hit. The Omin and Jim ones! Plus, if you order today - Valentine’s Day, The Day of Love - you’ll also get a special valentine from the person on the shirt you just bought. What? You heard right. We’re innovators. While we’re talking AI, I’ve always been fond of Gavin’s Wizard Cop shirt as well, drawn from Acquisitions Incorporated: The Series. I doubt it’s just me. Okay, I know there’s a lot of stuff. But there’s also something else special:…

The Dickballs’ Advocate
Posted by News Fetcher on February 13 '17 at 12:31 PM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
Beat-the-shit-out-of-players survival games are a thing, an entrenched thing, and making players naked and terrified is just an outward manifestation of the mechanical goal, I suppose. I played through the customary first fifteen of Nioh when we were Twitching First 15s, and I hope it’s not a spoiler to say that the first fifteen minutes of Nioh - maybe as much as the first hour - aren’t representative of the game in any way. To the extent that, like, I don’t even know what it’s doing there. Maybe it’s one of these things where it bubbles up later or…

Astrometer
Posted by News Fetcher on February 10 '17 at 12:31 PM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
The ritual one undertakes unlocking heroes in Fire Emblem Heroes creates a kind of dangerous, addictive momentum. Each time you go to expend your Orbs and summon stalwart allies, you draw an initial hand of five “stones” that you can choose from to become a character. But. Each new stone you turn over is cheaper than the last one, so not turning over all five is as difficult as not eating an entire cylinder of Pringles. For me. Maybe you can do that: maybe it’s possible for you to pop, and then, having popped, stop. I’ve never been…
