The Sixth Extinction
Posted by News Fetcher on December 28 '16 at 11:13 AM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
When I woke up this morning, someone asked me on the Tweetzor if today’s strip was based on this story, where police think what an Amazon Echo may or may not have recorded might be the key to solving a murder. It wasn’t; it really was that Kara got one for Christmas and, in fact, really does like it and does play George Michael songs on it. But the strip could also be referencing Cayla, and how she is your best friend, but she is also best friends with companies that do voiceprint analysis for the law enforcement, military, and intelligence communities. I typically…

Presents!

By Gabe@penny-arcade.com (Gabe) from Penny Arcade:
This was the Christmas of A.I. at my house. Pretty much everyone got some kind of thinking machine primed to kill. My youngest son Noah asked for and received from Santa a Hatchimal. This was a little robot creature that literally birthed itself from an egg in our living room. I have to admit to not being especially impressed with the Hatchimal. It makes some goofy noises and scoots around on the floor but overall I’m not too concerned with this thing taking over the planet. Cozmo on the other hand, is the kind of Artificial Intelligence we were warned about. My oldest son Gabe asked…

Twenty Sixteen
Posted by News Fetcher on December 26 '16 at 12:11 PM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
2016 is fucking trash, and continues to be so. Every PAX, I talk to at least a fifty people personally about mental illness, and thousands more in panels or via the streams. It goes back to back; someone says hearing us talk about it made them think what they were experiencing had an intensity and duration well out of the ordinary, and it goes right into conversation with someone else about the fact that they started on a medication, so fingers crossed. Mike has a different problem than I do, maybe in the same big “family” of brain stuff but second cousin tier at…

Ignition
Posted by News Fetcher on December 23 '16 at 11:31 AM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
There is a podcast where Mr. Gribs and I are trying to decide if we’re going to go hard on this FF, and my counterpart confesses that he doesn’t really understand the setting at all. We go into some of that confusion in a comic, actually: are these odd angles and juxtapositions intentional, or are they just a fucking mess, or are they the result of an interminable and troubled development cycle, or what. Final Fantasy has certain norms that exist between games, shared themes, iconography, a bestiary, touchstones that exist in an unbroken chain even as the mechanics have spun…

PAX South Indie Showcase!
Posted by News Fetcher on December 21 '16 at 04:41 PM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
Every PAX has things that give it a unique texture; The PAX South Indie Showcase - their version of the PAX 10 - is all tabletop stuff. It’s a part of the show I definitely do not miss, and you shouldn’t either. Here’s a list of your favorite games, circa 2017: Dice Throne by Mind Bottling Games Fantastic Factories by Joseph Z Chen Pirates of Praedonia by Big Kid Games Random Encounters by Regular People Gaming Wicked Apples by Almost a Game Word Domination by Uproarious Games Wrathborne Champions by Randover Games Yukon Salon by David Fooden Also: Omeganaut…

Rogue Nation
Posted by News Fetcher on December 21 '16 at 12:31 PM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
Well, I was doing shit. I still am! But I felt strongly compelled to see the movie before this strip was released, just to head a motherfucker off at the pass. Technically, I could have headed them off elsewhere. That’s true. But the pass is a very traditional venue. It’s my instinct to say I would refuse a job like that - the expansion into movie length detail an anecdote from a previous movie. An out of season adjacency, the twilight realm of fan fiction. That’s what I would say by way of donning a suit of ironic plate mail. In…

Twitchcraft
Posted by News Fetcher on December 19 '16 at 10:22 AM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
We watched some Twitch IRL and then immediately - as in, like, a minute later - wrote this comic. What is Twitch IRL? Twitch IRL is not the other channels. That’s what I was able to derive from the FAQ. I just play games on there, man; this shit is all new to me. I watched a stream where a silent woman ate soup for about fifteen minutes. There’s a channel for it. But apparently if you were there, alone, and you didn’t have soup, then you’re the Mayor of Trouble Town. I’m still learning how to writhe in public; roll…

PAX South Deadline & Call For Enforcers
Posted by News Fetcher on December 16 '16 at 02:01 PM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
I would be remiss not to mention that if you purchase your PAX South Tickets by December 18th - this Sunday - said Tickets will be mailed straight to your house. This is a profound convenience, and you can rest in the pillowed softness that is not picking up your tickets at Will Call. Also! We still have need of skilled allies to undergo the ritual and become Enforcers at PAX South. Will you heed the call? (CW)TB

By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
You know what? I think I DO like Final Fantasy XV. Enough to solicit aid from the Internet, which went more or less like a Web “It’s Cancer” M.D. search generally does. I’m being uncharitable. In truth, their advice made me a thousand times fucking better at Final Fantasy, which I was playing one hundred percent wrong. I would like to pause here, briefly, and say that it’s pretty cool that if I need tech support on my Magical Prince I can get that from a metathrong of experts, somehow abstract and discrete simultaneously. In the…

New Sweatshirt & New Year’s Pin
Posted by News Fetcher on December 15 '16 at 03:32 PM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
Our merchandise manager Lidija is always trying to get me to wear our stuff on the stream, but I never know what the official policy is on that. I don’t mean our official policy, which is apparently “wear it,” but the policy in general: is that like wearing a band shirt, if you are, yourself, in that band? But it was super fucking cold in the studio so I wore the Video Games sweatshirt and then I didn’t take it off for two days. Its premium fit and maternal warmth made me come to believe it was my own skin, and I was thus loathe to remove it. …

What Happens In The Evertomb
Posted by News Fetcher on December 14 '16 at 01:21 PM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
You’ve probably seen the video, but maybe you didn’t know it was called Cozmo. In any case this is a Robot from the Anki Drive people and it’s possible to get one but you have to buy it in more or less the same way and for more or less the same price as an equivalent weight of cocaine. I don’t comport myself in the way character does in the strip; I can only be made happy in a convoluted way, by creating the preconditions for happiness in others. It’s a huge pain in the ass. It looks prosocial, and as a practical matter that is its payload, but…

Pet Class

By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
Our Gabriel got hooked on The Last Guardian, and whatever its faults it’s still something you have to see. I’m glad they waited for the PS4 on it, though even that box is working pretty hard to contain it; this is another place the PS4 Pro is poised to deliver a better experience. If you were wondering how the game could have taken a decade to develop, though, this is why: because they created a living digital animal that behaves more or less like the real thing. I am about to tell you something I have never told another living soul, and I pray you will keep my…
