The GOG Whisperer

There’s another universe where XCOM2 is how they brought the franchise back; the long fallow period of XCOM’s defeat bookended by the oral history of an underground war. I understand why they didn’t, though - nobody save for a select few lorekeeper, weirdo cultists would even get why these subversions were novel or cool. They had to establish the form before they could reinterpret it. But I do wonder if they had this idea first. I have a lot of time to think about things like this because the actual game no rn so good. It’s been a very long time…

Gabriel put out the call, and I answered, but not after giving him a bunch of shit. If someone is your second choice, you need to make them feel as though they were your actual first choice and the other person is garbage can full rancid cottage cheese and weeping cantaloupe rinds. Which, you know… given the people involved… might have been a difficult position. I’m not an especially big fan of Crucible, which is what Destiny calls it when you shoot each other. It’s cool that it’s tied into the rest of their dark manipulators, but I play PVP…

Everything Old Is New Again
Posted by News Fetcher on February 10 '16 at 11:57 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
In Australia, men’s urinals are devices of unique and perhaps even baroque construction. I say men’s urinals, because even though I have never been in a women’s restroom in Australia I doubt very seriously they are constructed in this way. I don’t really see any way to use this device collaboratively that doesn’t result in a huge pile of women drenched in pee. Which is fine if that’s what you’re into, but I suspect that’s something of a gourmet taste. In any event, using these “grate urinals” is a little like Donkey…

My Timeline
Posted by News Fetcher on February 10 '16 at 10:26 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
I like to take photos on my phone as I work. I do this to keep a sort of digital sketchbook I guess. I like to be able to swipe back through my photos and see the work I was doing mixed in with pics of my kids and stuff. I thought I’d drop a bunch of it here and see if you guys found it interesting. So here’s a quick dump of the last couple months…minus my kids and some secret projects:) This starts with a comic drawn back on December 10th Christmas Present for Jerry First crack at the bear from Nightlight More Nightlight Another strip! First attempt at the…

Decrepitude

By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
I wanted to watch a video about the Skills in The Division, and it asked me my age. I entered “40,” which is apparently a number, and it was the first time I had even considered that I might be forty years old. That’s really the only time I get a sense of how old I am anymore, is when a game trailer wants me to choose the year of my birth. Except I usually don’t go all the way down to my year, because it’s too far. I usually choose the first year that will be a valid entry, and that year is always getting closer. I’m like a Goddamn…

Guardian, Definition 3
Posted by News Fetcher on February 05 '16 at 10:34 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
When Gabriel told me the story, it was at once completely silly and eminently sensible. It reminded me a little of The Mancraft Saga, insofar as they both map cyberverse and regular ‘verse at a one to one ratio. Videogames are definitely simulations and not “real” in terms of being constructed out of the typical materials we surround ourselves with. But the virtual worlds and the people that populate them still bear all our human metadata; our brains are ridiculously compatible with these places. Maybe it’s not weird at all that they can do…

Speculative Diction
Posted by News Fetcher on February 03 '16 at 10:42 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
There is probably someone who likes Dick more than me, but I don’t know them. Where I am typing this now, at home on my primary machine, I have no less than four Philip K. Dick books within reach - and this isn’t even where I keep my books. I’ve been trying to push Gabriel into this lifestyle for ages, they’re just very meaningful, formative materials, and as long as you don’t mind occasionally wondering if the toast you are eating is real toast you’ll probably be fine. But I tried to get him into a book a long time ago which he should have…

Macerator Syndrome
Posted by News Fetcher on February 01 '16 at 11:01 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
As the newest show, PAX South has such a cool energy. And its still so young that people are always asking me if we think it’s gonna be back next year. I don’t know a hundred percent of everything that happens, or is going to happen, but PAX South is a real show. We made a logo, and everything! I love coming down there, I love being handed huge bags of beef jerky, and I love getting radically different and profoundly contradictory barbecue advice. I also like being reminded, on occasion, that people actually like what we do. I do it because I like…

Reportage
Posted by News Fetcher on January 29 '16 at 08:52 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
I changed the person’s handle a very, very small amount, not enough to change the pronunciation, but this is almost the exact conversation we had re: that evening’s Randrew Jackson. Even if I can’t parse somebody’s handle in an explicitly rude way, I always assume it’s super bad and wrong, I just don’t know exactly how. I assume that most of the words in those dense bricks are different things it’s possible, though not entirely legal, for people to do to moms? Gabriel saw, like, a “Bill Murray 430” type handle, and got excited…

Potential Thingness

By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
The Witness! I don’t know, man. As a young person, by which I mean a much younger person, I wondered what adventure games would look like when fidelity crossed a certain threshold, and the “pixel hunts” of that era were replaced by something more like finding an actual needle in a real, non-metaphorical haystack. And maybe we’re there, now. I am playing a game where I don’t authentically know where the “game” begins and ends. I don’t know what pertains to me. Which I think might be the underlying point? I’ll…

Thornwatch at PAX South
Posted by News Fetcher on January 25 '16 at 03:01 PM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
We will be bringing a brand new version of Thornwatch to PAX South this week and I’m really excited for you all to see it. You might remember that at PAX Prime last year we announced a collaboration with the folks over at Lone Shark Games. The scope of the game immediately changed from a single game focusing on the Thornwatch, to a series of games based on Thornwatch, Lookouts and the Daughters of the Eyrewood. We revealed the new Eyrewood Adventures plan during a panel and you can watch the entire thing right here if you like: In the months since that panel we’ve all been hard at work…
