Reportage
Posted by News Fetcher on January 29 '16 at 08:52 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
I changed the person’s handle a very, very small amount, not enough to change the pronunciation, but this is almost the exact conversation we had re: that evening’s Randrew Jackson. Even if I can’t parse somebody’s handle in an explicitly rude way, I always assume it’s super bad and wrong, I just don’t know exactly how. I assume that most of the words in those dense bricks are different things it’s possible, though not entirely legal, for people to do to moms? Gabriel saw, like, a “Bill Murray 430” type handle, and got excited…

Potential Thingness
Posted by News Fetcher on January 26 '16 at 08:51 PM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
The Witness! I don’t know, man. As a young person, by which I mean a much younger person, I wondered what adventure games would look like when fidelity crossed a certain threshold, and the “pixel hunts” of that era were replaced by something more like finding an actual needle in a real, non-metaphorical haystack. And maybe we’re there, now. I am playing a game where I don’t authentically know where the “game” begins and ends. I don’t know what pertains to me. Which I think might be the underlying point? I’ll…

Our PAX Schedule
Posted by News Fetcher on January 26 '16 at 06:11 PM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
If you’d like to interact with us in some way during PAX you are more than welcome. Here’s a quick look at where we’ll be each day to make our rendezvous more likely. Friday Tycho and I will have a Q&A in the morning from 11:30 to 12:45 in the Main theater. Tycho and I will have an autograph signing session in the Queue room 1:30 to 3:00. You can find me later that day on the Thornwatch panel in Cactus theater from 4:00 to 5:00. Saturday The two of us will be doing the Make a Strip panel in the Main Theater from 10:30 to 12:00. Tycho and I will be at the Pinny…

Thornwatch at PAX South
Posted by News Fetcher on January 25 '16 at 03:01 PM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
We will be bringing a brand new version of Thornwatch to PAX South this week and I’m really excited for you all to see it. You might remember that at PAX Prime last year we announced a collaboration with the folks over at Lone Shark Games. The scope of the game immediately changed from a single game focusing on the Thornwatch, to a series of games based on Thornwatch, Lookouts and the Daughters of the Eyrewood. We revealed the new Eyrewood Adventures plan during a panel and you can watch the entire thing right here if you like: In the months since that panel we’ve all been hard at work…

A Near Thing
Posted by News Fetcher on January 25 '16 at 12:23 PM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
I didn’t actually call, but there’s a case to be made. I wouldn’t let any adult care for children, if it were up to me. No fucking way. Adults are just really tall, really weird children. They don’t know shit. The Witness - like Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak - is a game that I thought would never come out. Not because it wasn’t in active development or something, not because people didn’t want them to come out; not because a shadowy cabal managed to erect barriers at every turn. Just because, like The Force Awakens…

Real World Applications
Posted by News Fetcher on January 22 '16 at 12:43 PM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
More great advice from me. The strip started out being about some of these weirdass monsters in Xenoblade, alien monsters, alien space unicorns, fongroids (?), and assorted other quadruped a-holes where the A does not stand for ass, but Alien. There are a few “arts” we have, special attacky things, that do extra damage from certain positions - backstab or flank type stuff. Except there are a couple of these Goddamn things that are so weird it’s not super clear what even constitutes the “back” or “front.” Luckily, they foresaw…

Martin Randau
Posted by News Fetcher on January 20 '16 at 02:03 PM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
We have always called the villains you get matched with Randos of various stripes, and for some reason we assumed that everyone did, but I can’t find a lot of evidence for this connotation generally. Urban Dictionary, a wretched hive of scum and at least one other thing, suggests that it means anything from a “random person or thing” to “a nickname for Randy” which I feel like covers the entire ragged spectrum of meaning. There is nothing which cannot be called a Rando, apparently, which at the very least makes it easy to incorporate into one’s…

Further Die Casting
Posted by News Fetcher on January 20 '16 at 02:03 PM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
“The die is cast” is roughly synonymous with “this is the point of no return,” like “crossing the Rubicon.” And I knew that’s what it meant, but the imagery I used to get there was different. I mentioned en Twittre that, until very recently - the last year maybe - I thought the phrase “The Die Is Cast” was referring to a manufacturing thing, like a shaping tool. The tool that will determine the shape of events is already made. I was overjoyed to learn I wasn’t the only one who felt this way. But there were…

The Die Is Cast
Posted by News Fetcher on January 20 '16 at 02:03 PM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
A game called Tharsis just come out from a group called Choice Provisions, which I’d never heard of. Game development at the “triple a” level creates tons of human shrapnel, though, and I assumed that it was another ill-used cadre fleeing the mothership - but “Choice Provisions” is just what Gaijin Games is calling themselves now. If you ever liked a game whose name started with BIT.TRIP, then you like their stuff. They’ve allied themselves with designer Zach Gage, who has made at least one game you like. But it won’t prepare…
