News - Top Of The Morn
Posted by News Fetcher on September 16 '15 at 11:00 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
Eris Morn is basically spooky high school lunchroom girl, but in space. She has a perfectly good reason for being sad, but still. She’s kind of a Debbie Downer. I wouldn’t change her at all; I love her. She has to be there. In the new Pantheon they’ve developed, she’s the Keeper of the Weird. Now that they’ve allowed Story to sit at the big kids table along with the Shoot Shoots and Mr. Melee, questgivers have been unfolded in three dimensions. Inflated, if you will. There was a Destiny before, but it was not this Destiny.

The people I really knew over there mostly don’t work there anymore, an index of the terrible birth pains that produced the game. I don’t know everything that happened, and I don’t really ask. It would probably require an Eris Morn to catalog the pain of it with any accuracy. In the triage, their relentlessly iterated, masterclass loop was the thing that survived - and they built around it, frosted it, until… I don’t think I can escape from this paragraph with my metaphor intact. I was going to say something about how it was a firm skeleton, but now I’m going in this frosting direction, and the idea of a frosted skeleton is just gross. Would it be better to to suggest a process of accretion from a seed crystal? I don’t know. But it’s pretty clear, I think, that The Taken King isn’t in the Expansion As Usual category.
It’s become a truism that Destiny 2.0 is Destiny 1.0 and Destiny 1.0 was a Early Release. I can’t speak to it too much because I came in late, around the time of House of Wolves, when a lot of the big philosophical work was already underway. I never suffered beneath it, as you might have. I got in at the right time.

I can remember trying to get Gabriel to try Forza 5, hoping it might give him something to use on the system at all, but the launch was rough in general and eventually the whole box ended up in the closet. It would emerge for a season, groundhog-like, and then return chastened to its hole.

I can’t remember if I talked about it or not, because I’m always talking about shit, but sometimes there are leading indicators for these things: switching to the PS4 for Netflix meant I wasn’t going back to the Xbox One for much of anything there for awhile, wasn’t connected to the continuum there. Gabriel was trying to buy Mad Max on the PS4, and it wouldn’t let him for some reason, so he grabbed it on the Xbox One. Then he started giving a shit about what else was on there. Now he’s played well over a day in real time of a racing game he’s never liked before and indeed has specifically refused.
The cards are part of it, certainly. “Cardification” is more or less definitively the go-to route for prolonged engagement now; some games are only that, and nobody complains. I’ve read that it’s an unnecessary addition in some quarters, and maybe that’s true if you think cars are really awesome or whatever, but if you occasionally consider non-car topics in your daily life you might find that these collectible mods and single-serving buffs offer something akin to a zesty condiment. I’m asking for the opposite of no cards, in fact. I want more cards that do more things. I want to slot cards into the Drivatar, for example. Optimally, I would be able to play Forza 6 on a kitchen table using nothing but cards. Baby steps.

News - PATV!
Posted by News Fetcher on September 14 '15 at 08:16 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
We don’t actually get to pick the games that we play for the First 15. This means that sometimes we end up playing some real stinkers. It also means that occasionally we discover an awesome game that neither of us ever would have picked up on our own. That’s the case with today’s episode.

Deception IV: The Nightmare Princess is game I had never even heard of, but holy hell was it fun!

Before I became a Webcomic superstar I worked at a Circuit City selling computers. I used to chat with the guys back in car audio because our departments happened to be near each other. They used to install some pretty ridiculous systems in their own cars and I remember hearing about how they “protected” their equipment. I guess it was not uncommon to attach razor blades to the back of your newly installed stereo. The idea being that a thief would reach back there to yank out your gear and end up shredding their hands on rows of these blades. I’m not sure how effective this stragegey was. Personally I think I’d rather have someone yank out my CD player and leave, rather than bleed to death in my car. I remember hearing later that one of these inventive installers got in trouble with the police. Something about setting traps for human beings being illegal. The reason I mention that story is because Deception IV: The Nightmare Princess is a game about setting traps for human beings! I didn’t see any razor blade encrusted stereos, but there were plenty of bear traps and an entire section of traps labeled “shame” so that seems cool.

News - Forza 6
Posted by News Fetcher on September 11 '15 at 10:31 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
I have tried a few Forza games over the years but never really got into any of them. I don’t think I’ve done more than a handful of races across all the previous Forza games. By contrast, I got a review copy of Forza 6 last Tuesday from MS and I have already put 22 hours into it. So what happened?

It was a commercial. This commercial actually.

The last racing game I really got into was Ridge Racer Type 4 on the original Playstation. This game came out back in 1998 when Tycho and I were roommates and just starting Penny Arcade. We became obsessed with this game. We would race the same tracks over and over again trying to shave fractions of a second off our times. I’ve played the occasional racing game over the years since, but never really got back into one in the same way. When I saw that commercial (and specifically the Ridge Racer portion) I was reminded of how much fun I used to have with racing games and I decided I’d give this new Forza an honest shot.

By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
Apple was always a cult, but now it’s a cult based on a cult. The revelation has been attenuated, interpreted, made progressively less divine until you see a presentation like the one they gave the other day.

I once attended the opening ceremony for Sakura-Con, they invited us for some reason, and they sat me next to a Japanese cultural ambassador which was double terrifying, because try as I might I could not match his tone of serene reverence for the proceedings. I don’t even have that gear. I am the part of this machine that grinds reality into paste.
It was an anniversary for the show, and there was a point during this opening thing where they proceeded to cut, serve, and eat a cake on stage. I have no fear of cake, ask anybody. But that’s not when you do that. Apple just sat up there and ate cake after fucking cake, and I wouldn’t even say these were earned cakes. They weren’t even their cakes, to maintain the metaphor. Indeed, in many cases they just said they were going to start doing shit everybody else has been doing for literal years, all to the hooting of their lobotomized aerie. In the same way that Nike endeavored to brand the calorie, Apple is trying to brand the .gif. This is a rudderless outfit whose inertia alone is carving the Earth.
I’ve floated in and out of that context for years; there isn’t anything really wrong with Macs, but eventually I remember that I like playing videogames on computers and wake up as though from a dream. Every other use for a computer has been relegated to that of a terminal: my “computer” runs on a Google rackmount somewhere, I interact with it via browsers from anywhere. Originally, I had typed “bowsers” there. I want to make it clear: I definitely don’t interact with the Cloud via multiple evil turtle kings.

News - PA Scholarship Entries Due By Sep. 17th
Posted by News Fetcher on September 09 '15 at 05:30 PM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
Hey! We have a Scholarship, which is how you know that we are the real deal and wholly dedicated to legitimate stuff. Here’s an index of just how real: if you don’t send in your shit by September 17th, you can’t have the scholarship. That’s what’s up. I mean, you might not get it, even if you did send it in. We only have the one per year, which is why I examine these entries with incredible care. But if you need school moneys, and aim to positively impact the game industry with your education, well, I know a guy.

Hopefully Gabriel will deal with his dumb work or whatever so we can play Armello again in the afternoon. His aesthetic and the game’s aesthetic are at odds, maybe, but it all kinds works too. I had a profoundly frustrating game myself last night, testing out some stuff with River, who is an archer wolf lady that can fire shots into battle before fights start. There are dice, which means randomness, which for some is a deal breaker; but you can make a bulwark against randomness by expanding your hand size a little, and using them to . I tried, and failed, to penetrate the castle’s defenses for four consecutive turns, utterly ready to win, and on six dice I never got the one symbol I needed. It taught me something pretty serious, which is that if I want to win, hoping to win isn’t sufficient. I can curate my hand until I have a bounty of symbols and then make a play. I have no idea what I was fucking thinking.

We don’t usually cover tech news, but the new Apple shit is on point - and plus, we’re starved for clickviews. So we’re going to start live coverage of the press thing so that we can root around in that company’s ribcage together. Buckle in! Or up! Interact with the buckle in whatever way makes you most comfortable.

News - Mad Max
Posted by News Fetcher on September 08 '15 at 09:15 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
I’ve been playing a bunch of Mad Max and I managed to capture this goofy glitch.

I have no idea what’s happening there, but I don’t think it was supposed to work like that.

I think I finally realized why I like this game so much. It’s very much like one of my other favorite games, Assassins’s Creed: Black Flag. These sorts of open world games don’t usually grab me because I get bored traveling around the map. In Black Flag and Mad Max they have made the act of getting to the next objective just as exciting (if not more so) than the rest of the game. In Black Flag it was ship to ship combat on the high seas and in Mad Max it’s car combat in the wasteland.

If Mad Max was just the car combat and the ridiculously customizable car, it would be a great game. Taking down a convoy is one of the best feelings I’ve had in a video game. yanking guys out of their cars with a harpoon gun, blowing off their tires with a shotgun, all while driving super fast, it’s just a blast. Some of the best moments in Mad Max happen while you’re on your way to someplace else.

When you’re not fighting guys from your car you’re running around doing open world type stuff. The hand to hand combat is similar to the Batman games but more brutal. Mad Max is Batman if Batman carried a shotgun and liked to kill people. If you like these sorts of games, Mad Max is an excellent example of the genre. Even if you tend to think these open world find all the stuff games are getting boring, I’d check it out. The car combat and setting make it worth giving Mad Max a try.

Also, here’s some art:

My son Gabe is turning 11 tomorrow and I drew him his favorite Pokemon.

By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
Gabriel is enjoying Star Wars: Aftermath, at least, this is what I’ve been told. Generally I take it upon myself to tell him whether or not he likes something, based on what is appropriate to like. Imagine a sign like they have at a carnival, you must be this tall to ride this ride, except instead of vertical height it measures the density and efficiency of your synapses.

It might be a little while until I can commit to reading the books again; it’s not really a position that’s enunciated in the strip, but it’s where I sit whenever I’m not trying to avoid inadvertent prophecy. I’ll try out the film, and if it works, I can fill in the cracks and stoke enthusiasm retroactively. The model is more like a peat fire than a wood fire.
The previous sentence was included exclusively for my own pleasure. Any utility you might have derived thereby is wholly unintentional.
