Sweet Streams Are Made Of This
Posted by News Fetcher on January 20 '14 at 11:30 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
Today’s comic strip actually came right out of a stream we did last week. I was playing AC and joking with folks in the chat about the shanties. We were all laughing about how a captain might adjust his “playlist”. Tycho and I will be at it again today playing more AC IV. The plan is to start around 2:00pm pacific time.

By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
We’d seen the Kickstarter for Bible Adventures: Call of Abraham mentioned all over, and it reminded us of The Bible Online strip we’d done a ways back. But that was very much in The Far Side vein, single panel type stuff, and I thought there was room to investigate it further. The new game is more of a single player RPG, but we couldn’t leave well enough alone. That’s correct: in our humorous .jpeg, we were less than entirely factual. Call the police.
The pitch is poor; we may accurately call the offer they’ve made of Bible Adventures: Call of Abraham a Kickstopper. I bear ‘em no ill-will. We talked for a very long time in the 4th Panel we filmed for it about the ways in which their whole deal places the Jesus Cart before the Game Horse, and the results are inevitable. It won’t be in a position to deliver its spiritual payload because it either won’t get finished, or because it’s not engaging enough to establish rapport.
Then I read the pitch again, and remembered a bunch of stuff about that context. I grew up in the kind of Christianity these fellows are pitching, so I know some things about it. There are really two philosophies as regards the creation of sanctified cultural product: there are those which are produced to lure the heathen, and provide succor to the faithful. You see that in bands which are “Christian,” but you have to find out after the fact: lyrically, the message is… diffuse.

Stealth Jesus.

The incentives for kindness in an environment where survival is a function of resources and nobody knows each other are… perhaps they aren’t non-existent, but we can call them “ephemeral” and retain accuracy. Society is a story we have chosen to believe, because the alternative - while readily observable and undeniably true - is monstrous. And if you would like to see the most ancient human narrative played out in a kind of disemvoweled hyper-efficiency, I urge you to install and play Rust.
You can play DayZ and acquire some of this foundational knowledge, also. Videos which contain this information are readily available. But, again: Rust scours away the basics. It makes you look right at it. Perhaps nine times out of ten, not killing someone is synonymous with killing yourself. With a rock. To the head.
There are some established physical structures in Rust, remnants of some kind, dayzeevian warehouses and whatnot with crates that may or may not include shrapnel of various kinds from a previous civilization. One of the more illuminating experiences was finding a pistol in one of these boxes, and watching the waveforms it gave off careen around the space.

A Stream Come True
Posted by News Fetcher on January 15 '14 at 09:45 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
On Monday I played some AC IV here at the office and streamed it from the PS4 out in the lobby. Tycho ended up joining me and as I played a few other folks from the office stopped by to watch and chat. It was a lot of fun and I’m gonna go ahead and do the same thing again today. I’ll start playing around 1:00 pm pacific today and you can watch right here:

Watch live video from CWgabriel on www.twitch.tv

You can go to my Twitch channel if you want to join in the chat. You can also “follow” me from there if you want to get a notification whenever I start up a stream.

Low Self Estream

By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
I’m gonna do an afternoon stream today from the PA office. I’ll be playing some AC IV. I’ll probably start around 2:00pm pacific and you can watch it right here:

Watch live video from CWgabriel on www.twitch.tv

Also I believe I have fixed it so the volume is off by default when the stream starts here on the site. I had a few people complain about forgetting they had the PA page open and then hearing gunfire and explosions. Let me know if it worked.

Three things
Posted by News Fetcher on January 13 '14 at 09:45 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
Thanks to everyone who showed up to play games with me over at Snapdoodle on Saturday. I ended up playing about five or six games of Forbidden Desert with a different group of people each time. I got to talk and trade pins with a bunch of folks and overall I’d say the night was a huge success. A few people asked if it was something I’d be doing again and I think I probably will. Also thanks to Snapdoodle for hosting us. They are a small store and we sort of took over the place. I saw people sitting on the little stools playing games on tables meant for toddlers. Everyone I talked to had fun though and I know the Snapdoodle folks were really happy with the whole thing.

I tried Assassin’s Creed Black Flag and loved the first bit but lost interest when it switched from being about Pirates to working at a software company. Normally that would be it for me but I decided to give it another try when I got sick last week. I pushed through the Abstergo stuff which I found crazy boring and then got back to being a pirate. I really like the ship to ship combat and I have to say I’m glad I gave it another try. I’ve played 16 hours now and I’m about 25% through the game. I’ve had to play through one more of those Abstergo sequences but for the most part I’m just sailing around it my pirate ship killing dudes and having awesome pirate adventures. I don’t normally give games a second chance but I’m really glad I did in this case.

Finally if you want to see an uncensored version of today’s comic strip…you’re a sicko. I can hook you up though. Click here to see Gabe’s cartoon ding-dong.

They didn’t actually cancel HBO, Game of Thrones is almost back on. But if you were carrying a sub to HBO specifically to watch people fuck in plate mail, it’s an itch you could almost certainly scratch via these streams.
It’s true, though, that a percentage of the traditional television watchings at Chez Krahulique have been absorbed by this service. You never really know what you’re going to get, and it’s always on the precipice of getting fucking bonkers. People operating digital peepshows where the “payment” for the various “revelations” was a certain level of viewers is, for me, just kinda… huh. Sony has a fairly complex messaging problem here, as they literally have a button on their controller that says “share,” and they can’t stop this without eroding some measure of their thesis. But “Playroom” exposes them to some incredibly fucked cultural blowback. It’s not my brand; I don’t care what they’re doing if everybody is into it, but, uh… I’m not sure they are? All the time?
There are people here at the office, and maybe at your office, or maybe in your house because it’s you, who find the weird reverse surveillance culture thing immensely disturbing for some reason - it just, I don’t know. It tickles their neck. There was a point where the gathered throng was watching people who were watching television, and it sent some signal skittering up the nerve trunk inside my spinal column.

Ben Kuchera Lands At Polygon

I was overjoyed to see it, too. It’s a good match; it speaks well of both parties. I was curious what he’d think about something like Project Christine, that modular PC thing from Razer, and I don’t have to wonder now because he just wrote about it.

Two Jobs
Posted by News Fetcher on January 08 '14 at 11:45 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
The first is “Account Manager for PAX Australia.” You don’t need to be from Australia to apply, but you should definitely understand if you apply for it that Australia is super far away. Check a map. B]

The second is for somebody to help Jamie - something in the vein of a Child’s Play Administrative Internship. Actually, it’s not in that vein. It’s literally that. Check ‘em out.

For those who play the preview pane game, the snapshot for today’s comic must certainly rank high; with no crass art gumming up the works, only my intention remains. But you can hardly parody these fucking names! Even so, people are probably more likely to take something called “lunesta” than they are to orally ingest (S)-6-(5-Chloro-2-pyridinyl)- 7-oxo-6,7-dihydro-5H-pyrrolo[3,4-b]pyrazin-5-yl-4-methyl-1-piperazinecarboxylate. At least, I would. It’s a real mouthful. Where would you put the pill?

I said you should grab the Bravely Default demo on Monday, and I’m going to reiterate this recommendation today in more detail.

“Final Fantasy” is a crystalline structure that means a bunch of things. We can invoke it, and communicate a week, or a month, or a lifetime of information. That’s the part we knew going into Bravely Default, that contained within its fractal structure there was this other shape. But! There are things which are not that, and wouldn’t that be more interesting to discuss?

It has MP, which is used by the various classes in its Job system to “set it off” in various ways. But there is another resource, called Brave Points, which - combined with Default, the new “guard” option - make up the name. Generally you get one per turn, but it won’t surprise you to learn that there are ways of getting more than your linear share. So now that there is another way to gate powerful attacks, there are abilities which use BP instead of MP. You can also choose to go into debt on Brave Points, giving up future turns in exchange for immediate use. “Turns” as a resource, congealed into these points, is a cool idea. Managing a boss who is stockpiling turns to paste your crew works as gameplay. It works.
