New Pinny Arcade Site
Posted by News Fetcher on November 12 '13 at 03:45 PM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
Pinny Arcade has gotten so big that we felt like it deserved its own site. You will probably still see Pin News pop up here until we get people used to checking the new site for Pin info…pinfo? It has its own blog that we will use to highlight upcoming pins as well as give you a behind the scenes look at how they get made. You’ll see sketches and designs from me and the rest of the pin team here at PA. We will be using it during PAX to announce pin meetups and trading opportunities. We will also try and give you more in depth looks into projects like the Pin Ultimate edition.

Eventually it will have an incredibly robust pin encyclopedia…pincyclopedia? This will show you all the pins and give all sorts of info about them like how many were made and if it’s still in production or not. In addition to all that we’ve given Pin Pals their own form! So head over and check out out. We just launched it a few minutes ago so go give it a good once over and let us know if we missed anything. Also be sure and check out the new official Pinny Arcade Twitter. This will give you direct access to all of us on the Pin team.

PAX Australia Tickets Are Live
Posted by News Fetcher on November 11 '13 at 06:45 PM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
The first one was a blast, even at the venue we had, where we had to construct hallways out of canvas and pipe. The main question was, were attendees ready to PAX - PAX as a verb, to PAX properly? The answer came swiftly. It was an answer in the affirmative! There was zero ambiguity. PAX is something we discovered, not something we invented. And it was present in a profound way.

So we’re ready to do PAX AUS 2.0, with all the upgrades a full version number increase entails. That means a new venue, one not primarily used for equestrian events: it’s at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre, which is large and might even be considered vast. That means larger theaters (“theatres”) at a minimum. The new dates are just about a year or so out from now: October 31st through November 2nd. You can get tickets to the event I have just described right here, and you absolutely should.

15 Years of Penny Arcade!
Posted by News Fetcher on November 11 '13 at 02:15 PM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
It’s hard to believe but this month (November 18th specifically) marks Penny Arcade’s 15 year anniversary. We honestly had no idea what we were doing when we started. Certainly we didn’t intend for it to become what it has. When I look back at those first comics I remember those 21 year old kids living in a shitty apartment, eating Top Ramen, playing games and making comics. It seems like such a long time ago but when I read one of those old strips I remember exactly what we were doing and why we made it.

15 years is a big deal and to celebrate we are making some special stuff. All of this will go on sale in the PA store on November 18th.

First up is the limited edition 15 year anniversary pin.

This is an official Pinny Arcade pin with a limited run of just 2000 pieces. This is a dual layer pin. Think of it like two pins stuck together. In this case the year and the old Gabe and Tycho are on one layer while the new G&T are another layer on top.

Next up is the 15 Years of PA scarf.

Then we have a brand new Gabe T-Shirt that you’ve probably seen me wearing at PAX and stuff for a while now.

<img src="http://art.penny-arcade.com/photos/i-mQj32DD/0/L/i-mQj32DD-L.jpg"

This is probably my favorite shirt we've done. We're doing a ladies version too.

We’re also re-doing the classic Wombat shirt for the Ladies.

The update sports a new Wombat design and comes on a deep V neck women’s shirt.

Finally I have redrawn the very first Penny Arcade strip and we are making it available as a print.

Child’s Play!
Posted by News Fetcher on November 08 '13 at 12:30 PM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
Jamie just delivered a massive Child’s Play announcement and I wanted to share it with you all. Here’s Jamie’s post from the Child’s Play site:

With the holiday season upon us, we wanted to share some exciting news from Child’s Play. Due to the incredible amount of support from gamers around the world, we’ve been working on a new initiative to benefit children and their families in domestic violence facilities. Those of you who happened to be at the PAX East 2012 Q&A with Mike and Jerry may remember the original announcement:

Since then, I’ve spoken with dozens of domestic violence shelter advocates across the country to understand how they operate and how we can best benefit them. With an entirely new initiative, we wanted to take our time and ensure we were making the most impact possible with your donations. Unlike the network of hospitals we serve, domestic violence shelters operate on a much smaller scale and can have specific needs and challenges: Anonymous locations, apartment-style housing, multilingual families, and more.

Within our pilot program, we have domestic violence facilities that provide emergency housing, long term housing, counseling, legal advocacy, and a variety of youth and family care programs, but there was one unifying factor to each and every one: They’re in need of ways to support, entertain, distract and interact with traumatized youth. One of our pilot applications summed it up perfectly:

“The very nature of family violence eradicates trust, self-respect, and physical and emotional wellness in all victims, but none more so than with the children. These “hidden victims” are often the most vulnerable, overlooked and the least likely to receive appropriate services during a time of intense trauma.

Canis Superior

The best part about Call of Duty: Ghosts is the dog, you’ve heard that. You might even know it yourself. The strange part is that as I sit down to type this, it’s seems like the only part. The only part I can remember.

I’m not sure I’m going to play through the campaign until I get one of the new boxes; one of them comes out next week, and another one comes out a week after that; it’s not like I can’t find the strength or whatever. I’m not playing the new Assassin’s Creed on current gen hardware, either. But in the portion of the campaign we played, I get mad if I don’t have the dog. And in multiplayer, these fucking dogs eat throats daily. If you want a picture of the future, imagine a dog eating a human throat - forever.

There are like a hundred dog comix you could do. We talked about it for like a fucking hour. I don’t know how this came to be the one! Be sure to give it a second. But the running dialogue we have is almost exclusively related to where the dog is at any second. I’m starting to think we should record these first hours or so as podcasts, who knows.
What I do know is that I haven’t won a single game in three nights of playing. Kiko doesn’t like anything, so not liking Ghosts isn’t a particular surprise - the levels are “rat’s nests” the spawns are placed nonsensically, he has filled up more than one lunch with observations of this kind. He’s excellent at shooters, though - he sees it a different way. I always die, all the time, in every game; it’s hardly data. But what he’s telling us to do is to go back to Black Ops II. Immediately. Which strikes me as bad news for this iteration of the product. A ball was dropped, somewhere.

By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
We have turned to people “in the company” to sort of project manage the things we want to accomplish. Jeff regularly harangues me about the Lookouts novel, and Mike Hayes (nee Fehlauer) prods Gabriel until he starts sanding the edges on the Thornwatch GM’s Guide. Too hard at work, frankly. There’s too much focus. He needs to ease off the throttle a bit, to reintroduce those lumps and failures and delicious oversights that have brought me such comfort in the past, that ones that have so pleasantly situated my place in the universe.

There are a couple businessy things that need to be seen by the maximum number of people, so I’m going to make a place for them right here in the post. Are we ready? Let’s go.

- We are hiring, right now, for a PAX Event Director. Robert wrote the posting, so you can have every faith that it is a robust indicator of our desires for that person. PAX currently represents three shows - PAX Prime, PAX East, and PAX Australia - but you can probably guess that it won’t stop there. It needs somebody. It’s entirely possible that it needs you.

- Child’s Play is 10 years old this year, which is weird to think about, because the way my memory works I can recall sensations and experiences at such a high resolution that they seem fresh. There’s nothing I don’t know about it; trying to stuff four times the reasonable amount of cardboard into the recycling bin where Gabe used to live, having to jump around in there, trying to make his garage fit the coagulated enthusiasm and generosity of a global gamer community in toy form. I would leave his apartment at midnight and come back again the next morning by nine to do it all again.

Thornwatch
Posted by News Fetcher on November 06 '13 at 11:30 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
I’ve set a goal of this time next year as a release date for Thornwatch. Is that doable? I don’t know but I’m going to work as hard as I can to try and make that happen. So over the next year as I’m working on the game I’m going to share as much of the process with you as I can. I’m gonna start with a basic overview of the game and how it works because honestly I’m not sure I’ve done that yet.

Thornwatch is a tabletop RPG that has a GM running as many as five players through adventures set in the Eyrewood. Player’s choose a character class each with its own unique deck of cards that can be customized as the game progresses.

There are four types of cards that make up each player’s deck. These are SKILL, ATTACK, POWER, and TACTICS cards.

Skill Cards

There are six types of SKILL cards in Thornwatch. These cards are used to fuel your character’s attacks and powers. Strength, Vitality, Mind, Spirit, Dexterity, Will. Each class deck uses two skill types so for example the Blade (rogue) deck uses Dexterity and Strength while the Sage (wizard) uses Mind and Will. Here are all of them:

SPIRIT

You know the songs and ways of the secret Gods. You have walked alongside the invisible spirits who shape the Eyrewood and you can call upon them to help or harm. You can communicate with the denizens of the wood and sense the motives of beast and human with incredible clarity.

MIND

All your life you have been drawn to the study of books and scrolls. You have cultivated a sharp mind and you wield it like a blade. Ancient Puzzles and devious riddles unravel under your gaze. You are perceptive and mindful of your surroundings and no detail escapes your scrutiny.

STRENGTH

Mail Bag
Posted by News Fetcher on November 04 '13 at 02:00 PM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
I got this mail today and saw a tweet with the same sentiment last week. I figured my response might be interesting to more than just the person who sent the mail.

“We get it, dude. Pins. PINS! I’m sure they’re a high-margin item and you guys have kids to put through college, but damn. Every day with the pin posts.”

It’s funny I used to think the same thing but it turns out lots of people come to the site, read the comic and then don’t even look at the news posts. We talked for months about PAR, put it on the front page of the site every day for a long time and people would still come up and ask if we ever thought about making a news site. We decided to run a survey and it turned out the majority of people were simply unaware of all the shit we were doing because we only mentioned it once or twice on the site. It was incredibly eye opening. If we want people to know about something we have to keep talking about it. Obviously it annoys you but all I can say is that I got mail from people today who honest to GOD had no idea we were making a Pin Ultimate edition. I don’t feel great about hammering on it all the time either but we have learned it’s the only way to make sure the news reaches our entire audience.

hope that helps.

So yeah I’m trying to keep posts about things like merchandise, contests, promotions and other cool projects up on the site multiple days. Some times that involves me just shifting the date so a post shows up again after it was supposed to drop off the front page. I don’t like that though and if I’m going to have to talk about something a lot I would at least like to have new information each time. It’s a delicate balance and I hope I’m not pissing too many of you off. Just know that if you see something day after day that you already know about, it’s not for you. It’s for the people who are seeing it for the first time.

Pin Ultimate
Posted by News Fetcher on November 04 '13 at 11:30 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
We received the finished version of the Killer Instinct Pin Ultimate edition here in the office last week. You can do all the awesome artwork and design that you want but it’s still scary waiting for that final version to come back from the manufacturer. This is one of if not the most complicated merchandise projects we’ve tried to build here at PA and I am so happy with the final product. When it showed up last week all of us on the pin team ran from office to office showing it off.

Here’s the display case itself. You can click on all these pics to get a larger version.

You can see it is made up of three panels. The third panel folds inside so that when the case is closed it can protect your pins. We don’t want them bumping up against each other and scratching. When you want to open it up that third panel folds back around and is held in place by little magnets inside the case. This way you can sit it on a shelf open almost like a book. It’s a really smart design and all the credit for it goes to Kiko. I think he did an awesome job.

Here it is opened up.

You can see the background features original concept art from the game. It also has spots for all your character pins as well as each months engagement pin. The graphic design was done by Levin and again I think he just killed it.

Finally I have a couple close up shots of the two pins that come with the Pin Ultimate edition, Jago and the KI logo.

Kara’s line in the last panel was delivered, by her, at the time; everything else must be considered l’esprit d’escalier.

We’ll start talking about something else on Monday, I’m sure - but the site is sort of about what we’re doing, and this is what we’re doing now. We’re hooked. It’s like when you made a friend at school, and all you want to do now ever is play with that one person all the time.
The whole Wakfu/Dofus/Krosmater axis feels super French to me, which makes sense, because it’s made in France. I’m not saying that it’s bad to be French or something, it’s fine. But the whole thing is powerfully, overwhelmingly fucking French. Apparently this Goddamn company also has a turn-based sports game, which, I mean, gah. Let me take a breath every once in awhile, you fucks.
I’ve played a few excellent betas for “massive” games - Wildstar is something you need to be keeping track of, for example. But playing playing betas especially in that genre is supremely contraindicated. It’s like making a sculpture out of icicles, it’s the definition of impermanence. And then it converts all the keen interest you did have into boredom when the game comes out and you’ve already done the first twenty or thirty or forty hours.

Eyrewood Halloween
Posted by News Fetcher on October 31 '13 at 09:15 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
I got some really great entries into my Eyrewood Halloween Costume contest. They were all awesome so I’m actually going to give everyone who entered a Tithe print pack! I did have some favorites though and I’ll make sure they get an extra special prize pack with some Lookouts pins and anything else cool I can stuff in the box.

1st Place

PA reader Chris says that he and his wife were especially inspired by the Tithe as they have a little five year old daughter of their own. Chris’ wife is an accomplished seamstress and put together this costume based on Hanna’s in the Tithe. I may actually end up having to draw this one at some point, it’s just too cute.

2nd Place

Jessica says she actually started working on this costume as soon as the Tithe began running on the site. She says she finished it just as the last strip ran! She looks like she stepped right out of the Eyrewood!

Third Place

Heather still has some work to do on her costume. She says she originally gave herself a deadline of PAX East but at the last minute decided to try and get it done for Halloween. It’s such a perfect version of the Mother from the Tithe I love it already and can’t wait to see it all finished at PAX East!

The Rabbit Hole
Posted by News Fetcher on October 30 '13 at 10:45 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
It came up in conversation yesterday, but for some reason the closer we get to these new platforms the happier I am with the platforms I have. All the Orcs Must Die 2 DLC I never bought when it came out, like twenty dollars worth, is on sale for like six bucks right now. I had more than six dollars of fun with it last night. You can get a pack that includes all the DLC and the game itself for a little over six bucks. This is what I wrote about it when I was playing it the first time, and it holds up. That has to be one of the best deals I’ve ever seen, not simply as a mercantile transaction, but as a matter of dollars spent to joy produced.

Every platform has this for me right now. Even tabletop, which must be considered the original “platform.” Gabriel bought a game because it was beautiful, except it turned out to be incredibly savvy also; but it was like the glowing bulb on an anglerfish, and we ended up into these fucking people for all our free time and paying them to play their free games. We’re on Wakfu now, which is an MMO for people who think the combat in World of Warcraft is too responsive and exciting.

Krosmaster Arena
Posted by News Fetcher on October 30 '13 at 10:15 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
I had seen Krosmaster Arena for sale at PAX Prime and I immediately loved the art on the box. I wasn’t able to pick it up at the show but when I saw it again this week at a game shop near the office I had to grab it. The little figures were so awesome I even picked up a set of them as well before I had even played the game. I figured worst case scenario the game sucks and they will just look cool on my shelf. The good news is the game is fucking awesome. The bad news is now I have to buy a lot more of these little bastards.

Krosmaster Arena is a physical version of a digital game that you can play inside the games Wakfu or Dofus. I know that’s strange but it’s sort of like how you can buy and play a real life version of Tetra Master from FF IX. I personally had no experience with the digital version as I had never played Wakfu or Dofus before.

So what sort of game is it? To me it’s sort of like a tabletop MOBA similar to League of Legends or DOTA but without the tower defense. It’s about choosing a character from a diverse roster of heroes and battling in an arena against your friends. You could also describe it as a PVP version of Super Dungeon Explore or If you’re not sick of comparisons already it also feels a bit like a turn based Power Stone.
