Skirmish, Part One
Posted by News Fetcher on April 06 '18 at 09:02 AM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
It’s gonna take me a bit to get used to this “show starts on Thursday” thing. Here’s the strip. I was building an AT-RT with my son the night before I flew to Boston; I was overjoyed because somebody finally made models he found interesting enough to build. I think the larger vehicles especially are very, very nice - Gabe was pleased with the AT-ST he and the boys put together, but I’m partial to the Airspeeder sculpt in particular. Including the flaps separately so you can really nerd out on the degree of fucking apertures is kind of a grace…

Never Mind That: A “C” Team Story
Posted by News Fetcher on April 04 '18 at 03:32 PM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
One of the most humbling things about Acquisitions Incorporated and The “C” Team in particular is how much fan work it seems to generate. One enthusiast, Nurse Normal, has created a lot of work that I know we just think of a canonical. Early in the second season, Dragonborn narcissist Donaar Blit’zen is exposed to a material that obliterates memories. I’d heard that Ryan Hartman and Nurse were working on a project, and I’d seen parts of it, and so when I needed to choose a memory I chose the one they had been working on together. They…

That’s So Gabe
Posted by News Fetcher on April 03 '18 at 11:30 PM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
I grew up quite Churchy, for lack of a better term; eventually I couldn’t square some of the concepts. Then religion was simply the casualty of a mother who wanted her son to remain alive and a son who thought he was smarter than every other living person. I often refer to it as a Snake Handling sort of church, but there weren’t literal snakes; it was just a lot of stuff that, again, I couldn’t square. The Speaking in Tongues type stuff is one thing, not really a fan of that, but other people in the room claiming to translate the nonsense another person had said…

Freedom
Posted by News Fetcher on April 02 '18 at 12:51 PM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
Far Cry 5’s Hope County is a fallen place in desperate need of liberation, and one of the ways you know this is that occasionally a person will be tied up, muttering to themselves, and you can press X to LIBERATE them. Of course, once they’re liberated, they’re free to be operated on by elaborate systems that sustain the game’s world, which means that they have an opportunity to enjoy some “emergent gameplay.” It happens a nontrivial percentage of the time. I’m not very far into it; it’s hard to move forward when there is so much to the left…

A New Record
Posted by News Fetcher on March 30 '18 at 11:00 AM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
I feel like this one happened kinda fast. Soon we’ll arrive at a point where we can power our societies with the rise and fall of the heroes we create and destroy. If we’re going to continue in our effort to transform the Earth into a perpetual reality show, we’ve only begun to witness the grotesquerie. The effort to annihilate Ninja hasn’t been mounted with the same vigor as previous campaigns, they have instead mounted a sumptuous, nuanced narrative, possibly because sites have done everything possible to associate themselves with his rise.…

The Rub To Race Ratio
Posted by News Fetcher on March 28 '18 at 11:03 AM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
We used to play on Dark Iron. I introduced it in that way so that people who knew what the phrase meant had a moment to value their secret knowledge, but that’s a PVP server in WoW. In a song off The Impossible Kid, Aesop Rock describes an environment so uncivilized that it’s possible to catch rabies simply by walking to your mailbox and that’s exactly the kind of place it was. It might still be, who knows. No doubt part of its reputation as a heinous crucible for warriors came from what I presume were higher populations; more spinning teeth to catch other…

Autovore
Posted by News Fetcher on March 26 '18 at 10:40 AM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
Maybe a decade or so ago, somebody launched an AM radio station that supposedly catered to “my” biases as opposed to the biases of a nefarious and scheming other. I could only listen to it for about five minutes before I had to turn it off. Being force-fed my own beliefs only makes me question them. This is more or less how I feel when I watch a trailer for Ready Player One. Mr. Grob Dobalina enjoyed reading Ready Player One quite a bit, enough to buy Ernest Cline’s next book, Armada. Gabriel could not finish it, even though I don’t know…

Vitamin B

By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
Like many multiplayer shooters, Overwatch is also a place to hang out. That’s more or less how I’ve used it; I felt like I understood it as much as was necessary to provide incisive, GoldenBoy-tier commentary on the failures I generate simply by being around. Gleeb felt like playing Overwatch with Kara on the stream last Friday, so we did, and when I started navigating Moira’s approach to things I got hooked. So slow, but with a weird ghosty dash? Ikarugan, multipolarity skills? I was in love immediately. I’d seen the kit on paper, didn’t get me…

Sea Of Thief
Posted by News Fetcher on March 21 '18 at 10:20 AM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
The story is very, very old, and you know it already, but I can distill it for you. A new online game came out and it doesn’t really work. At least, it doesn’t work for Mike, or his family. We’ve catalogued the level of functionality he’s been able to glean in the strip. It seems like some people can get on, at some times, so I’ve included this fact pursuant to the Reasonable Rhetoric clause all public intellectuals are meant to uphold. Now that I’ve done it, I’m weapons free. But I don’t even want to be mad. …

Polymath

By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
We were trying to figure out The Ninja Phenomenon before he was playing with rappers or some shit, and now it’s even more difficult to pull this apart. But we can talk about the sort of shit this motherfucker gets up to on his stream. The shooter substrate beneath his play is excellent. His UI manipulation is cartoonishly fast. His building looks instinctual. I can understand each of these modes in essence because I do primitive versions of them. But for a normal person, a human person whose soul is not in hock to Lucifer, they aren’t all happening at…
