Monaco Prints!
Posted by News Fetcher on May 22 '13 at 03:45 PM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
They’re all done, and they look great. If you’ve enjoyed seeing my associate’s take on the individual characters, high quality prints are available either as a set, or individually. Kiko’s new “Scorestreak” shirt just came back from our shirt printer, and we have it for the ladies and also for manz.

Child’s Play Tournament Results
Posted by News Fetcher on May 22 '13 at 02:45 PM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
So before the tournament we let everyone place side bets on who among the PA staff would have the best score. All the money went right to Child’s Play and those who backed the right horse so to speak would get their names posted on the site. Well I am sad to say that Robert Khoo and his team took the honors with a score of -4. My team played hard but we only managed a -1. So here are the names of Robert’s supporters:

Amber Armstrong

Ben Wallis

Brandi Murphy

David Hanson

Dwayne McDonald

eric lee

Jacob Rogers

Jon Bankard

Jonathan Serna

Jordan Parker

Kevin Dent

Kyle Lichtenberg

Liam Hesketh-Jost

Matthew Dannevik

Paul Ference

Richard Amtower

Ryan Furlong

Thomas Barbour

Trevin Forkert

Wil Shipley

Xavier Velasquez

A score of four under par is pretty good and it was enough to beat me, but it didn’t come close to winning the tournament. Here are the real winners from Monday’s game:

1st Place with a score of 62:

EricKnapp

DavidMann

JJRichards

DanElenbaas

2nd Place with a score of 64:

GeneChoi

DavidHanson

AaronMcDonald

BrianKostol

3rd Place with a score of 67:

AlexBenson

EdBolt

JamesGillooly

PhilippeOnetto

Longest Drive: Brian Kostol, 340 yards

Closest to Pin: Gene Choi, 5’5”

Thank you very much to everyone who supported us with the side bet donations and everyone who came out and played. We had an awesome day and together we raised just over 30,000.00 for Child’s Play! Now I call that…a hole in one.

By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
With Gabriel’s adoption of the Surface Pro (and thus, a gaming capable PC) as a lifestyle totem, we have penetrated so far into weirdo territory that I will hear beepboops of unknown provenance over there and wonder where they’re from. We played Sanctum back in “the day,” liked it, and then interred it for some reason I don’t entirely recall. I knew the sequel was coming out, and I was gonna say we should play it, but he beat me to it. Get your head around that shit.
We haven’t been able to play it for the last couple days because of the Child’s Play Invitational and the Xbox Thing, but man oh man. I like Tower Defense games that are also Action Games, of which I find Orcs Must Die 2 to manifest the gold standard. We’ll see where this goes, though: Sanctum 2 offers up to four players and an interesting progression mechanic, so I think there’s a lot left here for us to find.
As regards the Xbox Unveilination, Gabriel has described it as “a massive fuckup.” He did that just now, a few seconds ago, and I was surprised to learn upon leaving the event yesterday that most people appear to agree.
I expected to languish there during an extended treatise on how mothafuckas are gonna be watching teevee in the future, when the TV stuff was more interesting than almost anything else. It’s the kind of daily use technology that isn’t sexy to most people. It’s why I’ll sift a hundred shots until I find the one with a clear picture of the current UI. I am a fetishist; I’m into kinky shit like “prices” and what I perceive to be “live game footage” and “implementation.” I strongly suspect that Galabriel is allergic to the Kinect, you can’t make him use it. But they want to. So, there’s that.

MS stuff
Posted by News Fetcher on May 22 '13 at 10:30 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
I was at the Xbox One reveal yesterday morning and overall I found it pretty disappointing. I feel like I wasn’t the target demographic for the presentation. I like to watch TV but what I like more is playing video games. I don’t care about sports games and EA has taught me over the years not to believe any of their pre-release bullshot videos. I also hate the Kinect. Every time I try to use it for playing a game or navigating the Xbox, the result is unreliable and frustrating. I like Call of Duty but their high resolution, motion captured dog and hyper intelligent fish didn’t get me too excited. The box itself looks cool in a retro sort of way and I dig the new controller but I need to see some games. I guess that will have to wait until E3.

There is a Microsoft product that I do love though and that’s my Surface Pro. I use it for drawing comics when I’m not at the office, for playing games, and just as my general purpose computer. You can see in today’s strip I’m playing Sanctum 2 on it and I’m sure some people will think that’s some sort of paid product placement. I want to assure you that’s not something we do here at PA. You can’t actually buy that from us. The best you can do is give us something and hope we like it enough to integrate it into our lives. That’s exactly what happened with the Surface Pro. I’ve had a lot of people ask me what games I play on it and I thought I’d put together a little list.

The Shame Hole
Posted by News Fetcher on May 20 '13 at 09:00 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
What I actually said was “Yes Jamie, Thank You Jamie,” but that comic sucks. This comic improves substantially on reality.
I met one of the guys on my team at the first Golf Tourney we ever did, and we kept in touch - he’s pretty sturdy, as I recall. And the “format” is Team Scramble, one of several co-op variants, which has everyone hitting from the best position each time and ultimately sharing in the best score. I would never say that this meant you should bet on my team, or whatever, or follow my curse-laden journal of horrors on #CPGolf, but it does elevate the possibilities from “that’s genuinely insulting, shut up” to a score below two hundred strokes.
All primary writing tasks for On The Rain-Slick Precipice Of Darkness 4 - the culmination of the games I started writing in 2008 - are now complete. Enemies, items, attacks, dialogue, all of it. Good god. I have to type it here so it will be real and maybe the muscles in my neck will let go.
There wasn’t going to be a third game, let alone a fourth one to finish it out, and I want to thank people for making sure we understood that you hadn’t forgotten it. I would also like to thank Zeboyd Games (which is really just thanking Robert and Bill) both for having the courage to do what they’re doing and also for being down to perform this kind of unholy resurrection. It has occasionally been terrifying, like any prolonged psychic exposure. I enjoyed it, in aggregate. I will miss it.

We had some technical difficulties this week and the result was that a couple of our shows ended up being late. I apologize for the mess up.

Here’s the new episode of Gabeart that should have gone up yesterday.

And here’s the latest episode of Strip Search that should have gone up earlier this morning.

Sorry about that.

Increasingly Damn Late
Posted by News Fetcher on May 17 '13 at 09:30 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
“Too Damn Late,” like Strips Which Include Div, is a specifically Gabriel form. I relent when when we are exposed to a glut of news which might individually make for thin gruel, but leveraged in this context are appropriate. The cadence is also fun to model. Anyway, the stars were right.
Electronic Arts has dicussed the wealf they’d stacked as a result of Online Passes, part of Project Ten Dollar, which was itself a kind of retail counterinsurgency. With the advent of new consoles, cost conscious players will almost certainly stay or adopt the existing platforms, which are as robust as they’re going to get; that could be part of it. You’d think they would take any revenue at this point, but EA has the kind of problems ten million dollars don’t fix.
Is this an olive branch to the realspace edifice that undergirds big launches? Does it imply that there is another way - a global code for games themselves, or a platform level capacity - to obviate this program? I’d hew toward the second, but nobody knows any Goddamn thing. Well, some do, but the things they’re telling me sound like the crypt-songs of face chewers being projected into orbit by bath salts. Functionally speaking, it’s all negative space. Portents and omens.

CP Golf Tournament
Posted by News Fetcher on May 16 '13 at 02:00 PM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
The Child’s Play invitational golf tournament is coming up next Monday and we have cooked up a sort of home game. You can hit up the Child’s Play site and place a little side bet on your favorite Penny Arcader. All the money we raise will go directly to Child’s Play. The winning team will get bragging rights and all of their supporters will be listed on the Penny Arcade site.

So hit the CP site for all the details and place a bet on your favorite PA golfer. Oh and it’s true that I did have Lasik yesterday but I’m healing really well and I don’t think it will effect my golf game.

Next Stretch Goal: Rewards From MC Frontalot And Paul & Storm
Posted by News Fetcher on May 15 '13 at 03:45 PM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
Longtime friends of the site have collaborated on goodies for backers. When we hit the next goal, MC Frontalot’s twenty track “Favoritism” LP will be joined by Paul & Storm’s “Do You Like Star Wars” and the “Learning Town Soundtrack” on the flashdrive you get at the $55 dollar pledge. That little flashdrive is starting to get pretty plump, kid.

Oh! And Front also has a new video, entitled “I’ll Form The Head,” which you can see here:

Randy Pitchford At PAXDEV
Posted by News Fetcher on May 15 '13 at 11:00 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
Robert asked me to mention that Randy Pitchford was handling the Kickoff Session for PAX Dev. I have done so! Now, I don’t know what I should do next. I don’t really have a plan, and frankly, it scares me.

Deets

By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
I am surprised virtually on a daily basis to find that my memories are all my memories.
They don’t seem like it. I wouldn’t have done the things this other person did. Well, except for hooking up after a D&D session. That’s still on the table, which is a double entendre obviously. Occasionally I can muster sympathy for that folded-in creature, and say that he did those things because the options available were constrained. It’s a fairly common mechanism for deceiving oneself. The reality is that I had a dilapidated framework for assessing the priority of a given activity.
Okay, so, this is the Golden Age. I’ve never been so happy. I mentioned it in passing before, but I only gave a couple examples. I didn’t even mention Card Hunter, which is a game that keeps me up far too late, withering my ancient husk until the bark peels clean off.
I could write an unlimited amount, but I won’t. I will write about a very specific thing: deckbuilding, as a mechanic. Games like Dominion or Ascension successfully made the intricate metagame of a CCG into the main event, with (what started as) single boxes that contained a gradient of playstyles. Even so, systemically, this is still deeply intimidating to most people. Ascension’s limited auction size makes it more inviting, but still: you can fall right through the floor of those games. There’s a lot going on. It’s scary.

It is; it just is.

Strip Search!

By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
Another elimination episode and this one is pretty crazy.

***SPOILERS***

***SPOILERS***

***SPOILERS***

There’s a lot of discussion about how heated the banter got in this one. Everybody reacts to the stress of the elimination stage differently and it was pretty clear that Monica wasn’t going to take any of my shit. I’m not stranger to snark as a defense mechanism (hell, I built a career off of it) so it honestly didn’t bother me at all. Both artists turned in great comic strips and in the end we just had to go with our gut.

Monaco Prints
Posted by News Fetcher on May 13 '13 at 02:31 PM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
I love Monaco. I love the game play, I love the music, I love the art. I love it all. For fun I started doodling the characters just as sort of a fun drawing game. I wanted to take the little pixel people from the game and try fleshing them out into full blown cartoon characters. At first it was just something I was doing for fun but we reached out to Monaco creator Andy Shatz with the idea of selling them as prints. He liked the cartoons and so we teamed up to make Penny Arcade your official source for Monaco merchandise. We’ll start with a set of prints based on my designs but we’ve got ideas for all sorts of other cool stuff.

(click for big)

So here are my designs for all the characters. We’re working out the details for the prints now but it should not be too long before they are in the store. I’ll keep you updated. In the meantime, go play some Monaco!
