The Emerald Dream, Part Three
Posted by News Fetcher on March 23 '13 at 09:00 PM
From Penny Arcade:
It is incredibly strange to have something be true for the first thirty seven years of your life and then cease to be so. I found my parents’ divorce at eighteen quite startling, but that was a Deeply Localized Fact that did not have an effect on incarceration rates. Remember that all of this hubbub is about a substance that has, as its primary effect, the not doing of anything.

Because of the winky, nudgy way “the marijuana” is always characterized until it’s time to go to jail, and because of the sort of but not actual legality, it’s hard to know what’s actually true sometimes. I am told that the situation implied by Wednesday’s strip is, for example, profoundly illegal. Ha! Wow. That’s good to know. I wonder if they have wi-fi in prison.

It’s an ongoing process in my state, and crucial parts of it are yet to implemented. Long term, Washington’s intention (and even some proponents disagree with this aspect) is that a stoner is the equivalent of a drunkard. We accept that such people exist, are members of society, and until such time as they endanger others they do not become our concern. This is a fairly radical reconception of the user, who before we might have described as a wastoid, a shivering thing Outside The Wall who is in ways definable and indefinable the Other.

Real Talk part 2
Posted by News Fetcher on March 23 '13 at 09:00 PM
From Penny Arcade:
I got a lot of interesting responses to my post on Monday. It sounds like I’m not the only one out there who avoids things because they are illegal. With the laws about Marijuana in Washington flipping I’ve heard from quite a few people in my position of being mid to late thirties, never having tried the stuff and curious what it’s all about. So I’ll go ahead and break down my first experience with it. Get ready for REAL TALK part 2.

It’s worth mentioning that I’m actually writing this while incredibly high. Not on weed though. I’m on a plane on my way to Boston.

Like I said in my last post Tycho gave me the “hook up” but I still had no idea what to do with it. I’d never smoked anything in my life. So I had a couple very close friends come over to my house and help me out. They took me out into the garage and got everything ready for me. Even knowing it wasn’t illegal anymore I was still super paranoid. It’s hard to flip that switch when you’ve spent so long thinking that what I was about to do would send me to jail.

They gave me the pipe and told me just to breath in. Taking a bunch of hot smoke into my lungs didn’t feel great. After one “hit” they had me stop and wait a few minutes. They asked how I felt and then had me take some more. We repeated this process a few times and each time I responded that I felt normal. I was starting to think it wasn’t going to “work” because I had heard that sometimes SSRI medication can actually negate the effects of marijuana. Then it hit me.

EP. 6 PRESSING BUTTONS

If you think this is hard, try doing a Reddit AMA. I was actually asked how it feels to be a worthless piece of human garbage. I said it keeps me busy.

Don’t forget to chat about the show using #stripseaech on Twitter

The Emerald Dream, Part Two
Posted by News Fetcher on March 23 '13 at 09:00 PM
From Penny Arcade:
One of the crazier things about marijuana prohibition is/was just how bad they have been at prohibiting marijuana. If I were walking through Seattle’s University District, I think it would be difficult not to get some. This is the kind of trufact which can be ascertained just by going outside, by attending a concert, or (especially) by attending an outdoor concert. Gabriel used to complain about it at the Dave Matthews shows he’d end up at, and I was like, man. Listen.
Listen to the lyrics of the songs.
It doesn’t require any sorcelations to get, is the long and short of it. People who go on to become President are not strangers to it. So the idea that it’s some kind of toxic alien fungus is the sort of lie that requires tremendous effort to maintain. Arguably, they haven’t succeeded.

The Indie Megabooth is a PAX fixture now, in a way I couldn’t possibly have imagined when I first saw it at East.

At PAX Prime - a show some have scandalously called the “good and true PAX” - several of my favorite games of the entire floor were tucked back in that labyrinth of low-fi pipe and drape. The density is good for me, because holy shit is my time at these shows spoken for. It seemed like it was good for the developers back there, too - there’s a lot about making anything that is lonely, for lack of a better word, and being physically near people with whom you share a set of very specific problems must be refreshing. I think it is entirely possible that this state of affairs might serve you well, also.
