Emulator, Part Three
Posted by News Fetcher on April 14 '13 at 11:15 PM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
I thought Gabriel the Younger’s bit of worldbuilding was pretty cool, here. When we were running through the setting with him, I asked if there was any chance a squirrel might scrabble in while the Good Guys and Bad Guys were locked in their traditional array and take a seat. He laughed, but I put a stop to that quick. This is some profoundly serious B.
Brenna suggested that the Throne was probably glamoured in such a way as to preclude Tyrants below a certain weight, or above some ill-defined “squirrel threshold.” It’s fairly clear by now that she’s carrying water for the rodent hegemony. I want you to imagine living under his tiny thumb. Imagine your children straining under the yoke of an increasingly onerous suite of acorn-related decrees.
When I’ve had time to play a game, a state of affairs which is ruthlessly conspired against, the venue is never in question: it’s Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon. I did not follow this game, I did not “anticipate” it with the hyperawareness available to us now, and I thought the old Luigi’s Mansion was cool but probably wouldn’t have adopted it as a lifestyle.
That is precisely what I have done.

2013 Child’s Play Invitational
Posted by News Fetcher on April 12 '13 at 02:00 PM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
Considering the today’s comic strip is about golf, this seems like a good time to mention the 2013 Child’s Play Invitational. This year We will be playing at Inglewood Golf Club in Kenmore Wa, rather than down in California.

Inglewood is a beautiful course and a great venue for our event.

Date: Monday, May 20, 2013

Time: 11:45AM-1:00PM registration

Format: Shotgun start with a four-person scramble. Team with the lowest round score wins!

Obviously I’m a huge golf nerd but even if you’re not a great player you can come out and have fun with Jerry and I as well as the rest of the Penny Arcade crew. This is our third year running a golf tourney for CP and I can tell you that each year we get players of every single skill level. We have people who are swinging a club for the first time alongside teams of scratch golfers. Regardless of your score, this is always an awesome day.

So hit the CP site for all the details and get your tickets today!

I.

When I’m as sick as I am now, it’s incredibly difficult to sleep. We’ve invented ways of managing that part: today, in the year of our lord whatever whatever, stimulation of a type which the organism can perceive is in ready supply if not literally omnipresent. I can deal with that part. What I can’t deal with are the alien thoughts that are constantly testing my resolve, trying to pass themselves off as homegrown cognition. The externals that talked to Philip K. Dick gave him books, at least. These jagoffs ain’t giving me shit.

II.

Gabriel the Younger has other classes in the works, in various states of dress, but even the bedrock is comprised of some fairly novel material.

III.

When I backed the Pebble, that “second screen” watch for smartphones, I had every intention of choosing a red one and actually thought that I had done so. Apparently I didn’t, and it’s a good thing, because red ones were apparently harder to make - no doubt on account of their increased speed. What this means is that I have one on my wrist, now, and at the risk of spoiling the next paragraph I like having it there.

Strip Search!
Posted by News Fetcher on April 12 '13 at 08:45 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
New Strip Search episode is up and it’s a controversial one.

***SPOILER WARNING***

***SERIOUSLY THIS SHIT IS GETTING SPOILED!”

There’s not much I can say about this one really. Plenty of people love it. Sometimes reality shows let their own ridiculous rules get in the way of the real purpose of the show. We made a judgement call here to try and avoid that scenario. Some of you are mad because you feel like we’ve screwed with the rules of the game though and that’s totally fair.

I love both Nick and Mac but after looking at those two comics I was incredibly disappointed. Remember that for me the previous elimination had just happened the night before. I looked at the work in front of me and I felt like Lexxy deserved one more shot. Does it break the “game”? Don’t worry, there are plans in the works and that’s all I can say without spoiling it. (stole that line from my man Nick)

The comments are already going crazy over this one, so head over and join them or follow the discussion on Twitter with the #stripsearch tag.

Strip Search!
Posted by News Fetcher on April 11 '13 at 07:45 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
The latest episode of Strip Search is live and it’s another great one. I’ve seen some posts on the message board asking to see the artists making more art. Well here you go.

When Graham says “it’s time to meet the creators” he really means it. Tycho and I had not met any of the artists until they walked onto the elimination stage. We had our spies keeping us updated on the happenings in the house but we were not actually there. So it’s been really awesome for me to get to watch all these challenges that I heard about during filming but never actually saw.

Remember you can chat with other Strip Search fans via the comments thread after the episode or using the #stripsearch tag on Twitter. I know for a fact that all the artists watch both places and love interacting with you guys.

Unlike pretty much every other reality television show our artists own everything they create on Strip Search. Erika has posted a big run down on the site listing all the merchandise the artists have created. If you loved something you saw on the show chances are you can buy it from them right now.

Last but not least please subscribe to our PATV youtube channel so you don’t miss any of our awesome shit. We have a ton of great shows besides Strip Search on there. Also the new season of PA The Series will be starting up this year and we’re working on bringing Gabeart back with a new style.

Gabriel’s son, also a Gabriel, has taken on the task of creating his own roleplaying game. That seemed like something we should catalog, and we have begun to do so. It’s currently six strips, and it looks to stay there. I have a lot to say about it.
BIOSHOCK INFINITE SPOILER WARNING!!! I have every confidence that you have played Bioshock Infinite, assuming that you wanted to; it’s the sequel to Bioshock, so it’s the sort of thing people make time for. I’m going to talk about it a little bit, mostly talk around it, specifically having to do with the fact that Gabriel and Kiko lost their connection with it. Like I said: you have probably played it. But if not, go away. I don’t think I’m doing anything outré, but people really flip wig about thpoilerth and talking about whether or not a person did or did not spoil X, particularly when you should have played it already, is the most boring shit imaginable.
Bioshock Infinite is a game about… a lot of things, and the mirror it uses to reveal them is a universe that is refracted into a potentially “infinite” number of permutations. What this means is that nearly anything is, was, or will be possible. When anything is possible, it becomes very difficult for some people to apply any value to a given arrangement of the board.

That’s Not Funny
Posted by News Fetcher on April 08 '13 at 09:15 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
I’m not the crazy Kickstarter that Tycho is. He kicks something new every day. I told him I just don’t have the patience to invest in something cool and then wait months or even a year for it to be real. In fact I’ve only ever kicked two things in my life. The first was 13th Age which I think is an incredibly cool new RPG setting. The second I just donated to this weekend. It’s a documentary called “that’s not funny”.

I love documentaries and this is one that I really want to see. If you watch the trailer you’ll see that it hits pretty close to home for me. It’s essentially a documentary about humor and specifically offensive humor. This is a topic that gets discussed a lot among the artists here at PA and my various creator friends. What can and can’t you make jokes about? Should anything be off limits? I find this stuff fascinating and I’d love nothing more than to see a bunch of comedians and writers I admire talking about the subject.

The director has expressed an interest in speaking with us for the film but I don’t know yet if that will happen. Our policy has been not to talk about the dickwolves stuff but it’s been more than a year now. It was pretty interesting and it certainly had a lasting effect on me, although I’m not sure it was the right effect. It’s something I need to think about.

But honestly it won’t matter if his movie doesn’t get funded. I’m not linking it because I want to be in it. Like I said I’m not even sure I want to talk about that stuff again. First and foremost I just want it to be made so I can watch it.

It is amazing how long and how energetically we can discuss the unknown. If I were feeling philosophical, and this almost never happens, I would wonder aloud about how fundamentally human that is. The raw energy we dump into the unshaped void. The strange fish that return with us, home.

We made a comic strip, also. I wouldn’t say it explores those themes exactly! But we don’t actually know a lot. And what we do “know” is bizarre. It’s a very odd business, this phase. I mean, I know things I think are true, but they’re so fucking insane that I could never say them aloud. They’re the sort of things you would tell a mole to flush them out. I don’t want to get flushed. If they announce it, I’ll tell you which thing it was. I’m not sure we’ll be waiting long.

I spoke to Stannis Torquemada over at Kunchorki about the piece, his piece, that catalyzed the most recent round of palantir gazing. The problem I had with the piece was that later, in what I assume to be the article’s “thorax,” he talks to people who say that the article itself isn’t true. But I learned that it’s vital in his line of work to “salt” (my word, not his) an article like this with caveats and other bugaboos to create the impression of a quantum truth even when you have absolutely trusted sources you believe in, because it’s not really a rumor then. Hence, the dance. He went to “print” with that headline because that’s what he wanted to leave you with. I recognize the importance of this ritual as a writer, if not a reader. That is to say, it is a localized problem.
Super localized; in fact, it might just be me.

Because their shit tends not to work at launch, and because by the time it does work I’m typically enamored of some kind of free to play browser strategy nonsense, I stopped picking up most EA titles new. Gabriel won’t be without golf titles though, his allegiance to the courses of his youth demands it, and he has rededicated himself to the sport. So.

Almost immediately upon execution, the game played an extended video detailing all of the new stuff it had, presumably because if it had not done so you wouldn’t be able to tell. The standout feature this time around is the ability to travel through time and golf against the dead, which isn’t anywhere near as cool as that might imply. We have said it before, but it bears repeating: they are essentially operating a Golf RPG franchise here, and I don’t know how well the annualized model serves the thesis. Especially when your hard-earned progress and precision face-making is obliterated every time you, as the true enthusiast, decide to re-up. That repeat customer is the customer they want; here’s hoping the next round of hardware might allow for something a little more organic than the all-or-nothing model. If any franchise ever wanted to be F2P, it’s this one.

Ducks
Posted by News Fetcher on April 04 '13 at 09:00 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
When we did our Kickstarter last year we thought it would be funny to include a few joke backer rewards. One of them we decided to pull right from this Penny Arcade strip about Kickstarting things. The reward was that I would shout your name while chasing a duck. I want to reiterate that this was a JOKE and we did not think people would actually expect me to do it.

But yeah everyone totally expected me to do it.

So here it is. Nearly an hour of me saying names and bothering ducks. We have included a handy watermark in the corner that shows what letter I am on. This should allow you to skip to your name pretty quick.

Some other quick notes about the video

-Yes I am bad at pronouncing names. In my defense a lot of them were handles with numbers and shit in them.

-It’s only first names or handles. So if we had 100 Bobs donate I only said Bob once and that Bob was for all the Bobs.

-I realize that I’m not “shouting” and I apologize for that. Also some people have suggested I’m not really “chasing” but only “following”. This is a real discussion that people are having.

-The woman in the background is one of the owners of the farm. It was actually very difficult to find a farm with ducks that would let us come and do this. She agreed to it but wanted to watch the entire thing.

-Finally if you have not subscribed to the new PATV YouTube channel now is a great time. We would really appreciate it.
