By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
There is a new Mario Party, and apparently it’s “good,” but Mario Party is almost a genre unto itself and as a thus may be considered an exemplar in a self-defined context. Rhetorically, it’s a sundered condition. But! It’s fast and crazy, and bright, and gravitational in a way, like a Welcome Sign. People who are actually good at games don’t necessarily like operating in contexts that don’t recognize their virtues. Or, as sometimes happens, games simply arrive at the wrong time. It might not be for everybody, but I think…

There is a lot about the Horizon Festival that probably seems very good at the time, but will eventually lead the kind of televised documentary with a lot of scary music that often flashes between full color and black and white very quickly. As a videogame, fully ensconced within a simulation that cannot spill into a world where mortals share the roads with it, it’s… hm. I’ve only played it on an Xbox One X, on the kind of television that understands things like HDR and 4k, and it’s difficult to describe it without resorting to hyperbole. (A sidenote. Being…

I almost never play games on phones anymore, unless I’m on a plane and it’s literally all I have with me. The last one I investigated deeply was Paladins Strike, which is not new by any means, and that was only because I happened to be into other Hi-Rez shit at the time and Michael can be very convincing. It was cool, but requires Internet, which makes the primary usage case questionable for me. A lot of phone games require Internet, even if you think they wouldn’t, or shouldn’t necessarily given the content, but here we are. Keek and Gabe play all…

These fuckin’ pets, man. I’m not even a regular player and I want to get a piece of this hound. Okay. So, let’s see. There’s a couple videos that you should check out, starting with the most recent Acquisitions Incorporated: The “C” Team. The first hour or so we have a special guest, namely Matt Mercer, whose full bonafides would take too long to relate but let’s just say he’s McCree from Overwatch and he’s also Dungeon Master of the most famed campaign currently being played in public, Critical Role. I…

The Shame Hole
Posted by News Fetcher on September 26 '18 at 11:20 AM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
Gabriel hates Kell’s Grave as a Gambit map. I mean, I have maps I’m scared of: Cathedral Of Stars, the one that got unlocked on the raid completion, is mostly a suite of opportunities for me to look at the underside of the map. But I don’t carry motes unless I pick one up on accident and then have to get four more just to make it worth the trouble. Gabe carries motes. And, apparently - I’m getting all this second hand - falling into the acid with fifteen motes feels real bad. We’ve been trying to figure out this “Nightingale”…

Stuck Pigment

By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
Mike and I receive Tattoos very differently. This fact is discussed in today’s strip, but there is another way you can become acquainted with it, and that is to watch the video embedded tastefully below these words. The tattoo artist terminology for someone who takes a tattoo in this way is “A Box Of Cats.” Watch G & T: Tattoos from PennyArcade on www.twitch.tv I have a different reaction. Which is to say, not much of one. I’m nowhere near as entertaining as Gabe is. I “go remote” when subjected to various kinds of stress…

So much stuff going on today. Yeesh! Okay. Let’s go. I don’t consider the PlayStation retro yet, largely because features a ton of 3D stuff, but I’m open to the idea that the event horizon has claimed this portion of the medium’s history. I suspect if I asked my son he would say that the PS1 is Retro because it is Old, but he’s fucking twelve. Everything is old compared to him. We imported Jumping Flash back in the day, so we were overjoyed to see it on the Classic - obviously FF7 is a draw, that’s gonna sell a machine…

The Craw Eternal

By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
I feel like a sweatshop that the worker willingly enters constitutes a kind of labor market endgame. Like the opt-in Surveillance State we acknowledge and worship every time we tag a photo, we really have to take a second to think about this. But nobody has a second. I deeply resent the fact that one can accurately and succinctly describe the actual world we live in and sound like a fucking AM radio whackjob. It’s true that these are choices people are making, ostensibly with the knowledge that this type of “employment” has none of the strictures commonly…

This Is Why I’m Hot
Posted by News Fetcher on September 17 '18 at 11:20 AM
By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
We knew that including the actual image I received in the comic would provide delight purely as a hidden object game, but I wasn’t a hundred percent prepared for how viscerally people would feel it. In the past, I’ve either helped him build a computer or he’s bought them online. This one isn’t even technically for him, it’s for Gabriel the Younger, and they put the whole thing together… together. I try to adhere to a robust moral praxis, but I can’t pretend not to be mesmerized by case lights that sync with your mouse, keyboard, and…

By Tycho@penny-arcade.com (Tycho) from Penny Arcade:
I’ve had a chance to check out Cody Blorpfor (esq.) on PS4 and Xbox One X now in Blackout mode, and I’ve had fun everywhere I’ve played it. The Base PS4 gets a workout for sure - I don’t know if it’s some kind of dynamic resolution thing happening or if it’s simply my ocular fluid crystallizing due to my advanced age, but the game really would rather be running on the newer boxes. The Xbox One X doesn’t give a shit about it, near as I can tell. I think it could mine Bitcoin in the background. What I’ve seen online has a good…
