Sand and Acquisitions Inc.

Sand is up to part nine now and we’re starting to bring this little story to a close. Thanks to everyone who has emailed or tweeted me about the project. It makes me really happy to hear from so many people who are enjoying it. It’s been a lot of fun for us revisiting a project that we started almost 18 years ago. This is sort of like the reboot only we’re the ones doing the reboot I guess. Also no one ever saw the original.

I talked too my sister this morning and she mentioned that years ago I gave her a drawing of Sand and it’s been on her wall ever since. I asked her to take a picture of it and it’s too funny not to share with you all.

So here is what the main character looked like back in 1996:



That’s 17 years ago. That’s two years before we started Penny Arcade. Hard to believe.

Anyway I think we’ve got one more big page of Sand left to wrap the story up. That will go up on Monday and then we will get back to video game and dick jokes. Meanwhile here is a nice high res version of my favorite panel from today’s strip.

Sand, Part Nine

Part nine of Sand is available, and I think there’s only one more. That’s why it took us so long to get around to it - it’s, uh… I guess Elaborate would be the word. It’s ten “strips,” total, but many of the strips are larger than standard. This would have been a month at least according to the regular schedule. At the very least.
So, a lot of Australian stuff happened in Australia. If you try to tip a person who has provided a vital service and done so with aplomb, they will treat you like you are trying to hand them a cobra. It was bonkers. But! Nestled into the rest of the superstructure was an hour or so of time slash heady discussion with and about the Oculus Rift. Ben over at PAR has, partly due to his mission and partly due to his unbounded fascination with its potential, taken a leadership role in Rift reportage. He brought the equipment out with him, and once I wrapped up my post I walked the eight or so blocks to over to his place to see it. Technically, for me, it was twelve blocks. I passed it and had to walk back. I’m tough; I can handle it.
The figure Ben cut in the room was that of a kind of Oculus Rift dealer, smirking with secret knowledge of his wares, distributing samples with ease. Erika, Levin, and “Gabriel” had beat me to the room and were already impressed. He cycled us through Quake, some kind of Space Lander, and a rollercoaster which might have been the highlight. Part of the fun is trying to create a haptic space for the user to be further immersed. I could tip and rock Levin’s chair for the rollercoaster to sync things up, and when he returned the favor it was on the border of “too much.”

I’m back!

I’m back home from Australia now and I had an incredible vacation, or should I say holiday? I brought a ton of stuff to manage the long flights, and hotel downtime. I figured I’d toss up a list of what I enjoyed.

Games!

Mario and Luigi: Dream Team

This game is actually already out in the UK and Australia. If you haven’t played any of the other Mario RPG games they really are awesome. The writing tends to be much better than the average mario game and Dream Team is no exception. I’m about ten hours in and I’m loving the story and the dialog. It’s genuinely funny and refreshingly self aware. The gameplay is a mixture of overworld puzzle solving and classic turn based RPG battles. It’s a ton of fun and the way they switch things up in the “dream world” sections really keeps the game fresh. I love it!

Halo Spartan Assault

This is a top down dual stick shooter for Windows 8 set in the Halo universe. Sadly it’s a dual stick shooter that doesn’t support dual sticks as of right now. I’d love it if I could just use my 360 controller. As it stands you can use mouse and keyboard or touch controls. I’m playing it on my Surface Pro and I prefer the mouse and keyboard but on the plane the touch controls were more convenient and worked fine.

I caught the last of the MC Frontalot/Protomen shows Sunday night, and in abrogation of my typical “politely refuse offered drinks” policy I instead accepted them graciously and applied them directly. When I woke up, I had the distinct impression of being on the deck of a ship - a sensation which has not abated. When I walk down the hall, I won’t lie: I cut a fairly jaunty arc.

I also had several more conversations related to whether or not we would ever return to Australia for any reason, let alone because we now operate an annual convention in Melbourne. It’s not my expectation that an individual will read every update, and indeed, such a policy would be unreasonable. But when you couple that with the fact that I have a condition which makes it difficult for me to promote my own Goddamned work, opportunities for crack-slipping abound. There are three PAX shows, and one of them takes place in Melbourne. Specifically Melbourne, VIC. Also, Zeboyd and I finished On The Rain-Slick Precipice Of Darkness with Episode Four. Oh! And I’m in Australia.
There is a washer and dryer in this room, the one we’re staying in, and we’re just about done washing everything so that we can pack our suitcases with clean clothes for the return trip. There is something about that - something symmetrical, parenthetical - that feels so good you just have to sit and vibrate for a little while. It feels like you’ve discovered some hidden victory condition when you pull it off; I can see multipliers and points of various kinds leaping right off the luggage.

Australians respond with such fervor over slights against their towns and are so quick to distribute these slights that I can’t tell to what extent any of this is even true. I don’t know if this is evidence of actual pride of place or if it’s like the World Wrestling Entertainment version of pride. People approaching the microphone during Question and Answer panels would typically bootstrap their question with a fusillade of sorts against their erstwhile foes.

People from Melbourne were very, very insistent that their town was better than Sydney generally but also in every conceivable particular. People from Brisbane have a high opinion of Brisbane I noticed, as well. They think it’s a good town. People from Perth seem a little shy about it. Everywhere else, it’s apparently open war.

I’m from a town that I like, too. But I don’t get offended when people say that Portland is somehow better than Seattle, because that’s the kind of fabulism one associates with the worst excesses of no wait I get it.
Ben described being in Australia as like owning a kind of Creative TARDIS, in that it gives you wackily long leads on things, but if you just congenitally have a weird relationship with time you’re still going to be worried about it. I have a watchface for my Pebble that says the time here and at home, but not the date, so there is always a tiny crack through which worry may slip. The practical end of that is that even though I’m halfway across the world, the post is going up with the strip - something I never seem to manage at home. Terror is the answer, apparently.

I was fucking around in a part of Melbourne called Fitzroy until after midnight when I realized that I had an abstract but more or less functional map of the town running as a background process. It was blurry, but the lines were all in the right places; it was all a matter of increasing the resolution. So of course we had to leave in the morning, right as I was getting it all dialed in.

Australian troll game is pretty strong, cryptozoology coupled with just the right proportion of fact: my favorite was the story an Enforcer told me about a lesion you can get from a bite that grows more lesions on top of the existing lesion. But I haven’t seen any of the spiders I’m supposed to watch out for. The only spider we saw of any kind was a Spider Roll my mom got in some laneway sushi hole, and honestly we were happy to see it.
While at PAX Aus I talked to somebody from Satellite Reign, the inexplicably unfunded successor to Syndicate. I don’t know if it’s Kickstarter fatigue, or if I am the only person who remembers Syndicate, or what. But I like what they’ve got to say - I backed it earlier today. Which is probably still your tomorrow, because globe.

There have been a couple fairly high profile delays in Kickspace, but as somebody who has made things even a thousandth the complexity of a retail game I’m pretty impressed that any games get made. I wouldn’t say that somebody else shouldn’t be mad, as they paid in on what is essentially a broken promise. But, again: every subtle force in the universe conspires against the creator.

I have learned a lot in the last few days.

I became acquainted with the ever-returning savory phoenix known as Vegemite. I learned that there is a song associated with that dark ichor. I learned that I sign things with a “texter,” as opposed to a marker. Most interesting to me was learning that the update schedule I thought I was keeping - the one I’ve kept for the better part of fifteen years - is wrong. The strip actually goes up in the evening, not the morning. And the post arrives on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
I’ve tried to help my son understand this last bit, something like ten times, but I can’t get it to take. He thinks of time as something immutable, as opposed to a tool we have made. When you look at how the the actual time zones are laid out, it looks like a kid drew them.
From two different people, I learned the words “frutescent” and “scripturient.” At first I thought he said “scripturion,” like some some kind of word-warrior, and I reacted viscerally. Alas.

Sand Part The Third is up. No, you haven’t missed one; I’m including the pitch in the sequence.

Time has been moving in a strange, thick sort of way. I don’t feel particularly put out by it, it’s not really debilitating, but I’m much more aware of its passage. So when I think about yesterday, each discrete experience is like a train car pushing through a tunnel filled with jam.
At one point a drizzle turned into sheets and sheets of cold water, and Gabriel and I had to take shelter together in a stable. Do with that image what you will.
I also ended up downtown somehow. This was very surprising, because I thought that I was already downtown. I wasn’t anywhere near downtown. I saw the Southern Cross station from the Cab and and sorta flipped out, to the amusement of the driver. I was headed that direction to attend a party of some kind, loaded with tons of early builds and interesting people throughout the continuum of the Melbourne development community. It was on the forty sixth floor of a building and the walls were all glass. I had to stare out of them for awhile before I tried to engage with the event at all.

Pinny Arcade was huge at PAX East and that makes me incredibly happy. Doing this right has literally taken us years and seeing how much fun everyone had with it was super rewarding. I loved trading pins at the show and I actually spent pretty much every free second I had posted up someplace trading. At one point I intended to pop by the PA merch booth and trade some pins. I traded non stop for two fucking hours! When I think about how rad the entire experience was I just can’t stop smiling. So I’m super excited to do it again at PAX Australia next month. We will have the Pinny Arcade core set available as well as a special PAX Australia set you can only get at the show.



So let’s talk about the new pins for a second.

It was clear at PAX East that the PAX logo pin that came in the set was usually the first to get traded away. I understand why, it isn’t a cool character like the other pins. With that said though, I also think it will end up being the most collectible as it was the very first Pinny Arcade event and it has the date on it. Now being as this is the very first PAX Australia I would encourage Pinny Arcade collectors to keep that logo pin!

Upside down Thomas, Gabe and Tycho are in this set as well. They are all upside down because…you know Australia and shit. Thomas is also sporting the brand new PAX Australia scarf. All four of these pins will be purchasable as one set from the merch booth at the show.

The fifth pin is a brand new Chandra pin based on the artwork I did for a MtG coloring book a while back. This pin will only be available at the Wizards of the Coast booth.

A few hours into the Melbourne flight, I was more or less covered in vomit. But I was so happy for something to do that I was - in a way which might be difficult to understand - tremendously relieved. There was something unexpected to manage with a “challenging” material that wasn’t related to the destruction of the plane. It was, in its incalculably moist way, optimal.

I didn’t really sleep on the trip, which felt long but not as long as I expected. My expectation was that it would not actually end at any point, that it would be a new state of being inexorably woven with my physical and psychic selves, so this must be seen as an improvement. Getting out of the Airport once we landed was Kafkaesque, but whatcha gonna do. Sometimes people want to bring nuts into your country that you don’t want in there! Those people must be stopped at all costs.
Melbourne is actually pronounced Mel-Byn, as though it were a wizard; I learned this from Scott And Kris, who are also Kris and Scott. They’re on their way to the San Diego Comic Con, a convention I’ve attended for more than a decade solid, and this is the first time I haven’t been there since I started going. I know how to feel about being here, which is great. But I don’t know where to file the other thing.
