Extra Credits: Games For Good
Posted by News Fetcher on June 05 '13 at 01:45 PM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
It is our great pleasure to know the crew from Extra Credits, and I have suggested to James over there that I am at his service; he’s just given me an opportunity to prove it.

We spoke on the phone at length last week, as long as our respective schedules could possibly allow after failing to meet up for nearly a month. He told me he more or less wanted to dedicate a year of his life to creating a public conversation about what games are and what they can accomplish. Like, “move to Washington D.C. and become a citizen lobbyist” type stuff. Act as a catalyst to get grant funding moving toward electronic games that further this dialogue. It’s a fairly clear evolution of that they do with their show, and it makes a lot of sense to me. If it makes sense to you also, you’re in luck: they’re crowdfunding the whole shebang here.

Marvel Heroes
Posted by News Fetcher on June 05 '13 at 12:00 PM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
I’m probably not going to play anymore Marvel Heroes. After the prologue I arrived at the Avengers headquarters and immediately saw tons of the free heroes as well as a few of the purchasable ones. It looks sort of silly to see five hawkeyes running around but I figured this was the hub where you buy shit, get outfitted and group up so it’s not a big deal. Tycho and I formed a party and jumped into the first zone. Now I was imagining that it would be an instance that Tycho and I would share and we would beat up some dudes together similar to Diablo or torchlight. That was not the case.

It’s actually a zone similar to an MMO with tons of people running around killing mobs that spawn, get beat up by roving bands of heroes and then re-spawn. So we arrive in the zone and immediately notice that all the bad guys are already dead. We begin moving through the city streets and find more corpses scattered around. Eventually some bad guys spawn behind and run to catch up with us. I’m not sure why some gang thugs would run towards the Thing and Daredevil but they did and we beat them up. All the while we see groups of heroes running around just like you would in any other MMO. Over here you see three Scarlet Witches beating up some dudes. Around the corner you find four the Things and a couple Spidermans doing the same. Eventually we found a massive group fight against Electro and joined in. I was one of five the Things hitting this dude and I felt like a complete jackass. It’s very cool to be the Thing. It’s dumb to be one of many the Things. Also I have a hard time believing there are many bad guy type problems that five the Things could not solve.

Marvelous Heroism
Posted by News Fetcher on June 05 '13 at 10:00 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
I had installed Marvel Heroes during a Beta Weekend, and it had been continually updated, so when it actually came out at ten yesterday morning I was in a very good position to play it.

I emerged from the introduction more impressed than I expected to be - far more. As Daredevil, my clubs really seemed to be hitting these jagoffs and they were not fans. What’s more, there was a nice loop where I could strike multiple jagoffs, conferring a slowing effect, which I could then capitalize on with an attack I’d just skilled into that hit all opponents and did extra damage to those who had been slowed. Then I hit some other guys, and I hit the Green Goblin, and then I left.

Gabriel had a similarly enjoyable time in his own shard of that universe, and we immediately tried to get into the next missions together. The icon you’d think would let you add and interact with friends is actually the list of all the superheroes you don’t own; the actual friends list looks like two speech bubbles and is over by the chat window, which is like… I don’t even know what it’s like. Maybe it was a test. Anyway, we passed it, and entered a mission.

That is the moment we have collected in the strip.

We have some new offerings in the PA store that I wanted to share with you.

First up is a brand new Strip Search T-Shirt

If you’ve been watching the show you’ll recognize our “ready, set, art” catch phrase and the wastebasket of broken dreams.

Next we have the Kill Streak shirt.

This one comes from the Call of Duty strip we did a while back.

Finally we have a huge sale on First Party stuff going on. With Father’s day just around the corner this might be a good time to pick up some classy gaming gear for Dad.

Here, Have Some Truth
Posted by News Fetcher on June 03 '13 at 11:00 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
When you have made a successful game, making a sequel is just what happens. it’s natural! Physics asserts itself, and the notion condenses out of the solution.

I don’t mean that making it is autonomic. Even telling other people to make things is exhausting; ask Jeff, who has maintained a tyrannical atmosphere the last few weeks to get On The Rain-Slick Precipice 4 out the door on Friday. But whether or not a project like that is undertaken at all is more straightforward.

Asheron’s Call had done well, that was the one I’d actually lost myself in completely, and since making a sequel to successful games is what you do, they made another one that collapsed in months. You can see the “mad science” aspects of the plan from our current chronojuncture: the creation of an ultrabeast, leveraging existing DNA, who has the same food source as the original organism. It’s not something you should do. This is how conventional wisdom turns people into dumb animals.
For years, NC Soft enunciated a discrete plan - to make and sustain a host of massively multiplayer games that invariably caught the players churned out of other genre entries. Their own, and others. EVE Online has simply reinvested in the original game. But if you are operating World of Warcraft, we know now that you don’t make a “World of Warcraft 2.” The reality is that we’re on World of Warcraft 5 already, and it’s still not done.

PA DLC FIN
Posted by News Fetcher on May 31 '13 at 02:45 PM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
The Kickstarter is over, and I feel confident saying that this particular Kick has been well and truly catalyzed.

I feel like I should go to Merriam Webster Online and pick a good synonym for overwhelmed, because I already used overwhelmed in the update on the project page over there. Flabbergasted oughta do it. I hardly know what to do with a mandate at this threshold! What I intend to do is make a huge pile of podcasts, claiming undisputed ownership of your commute; hopefully we are of one mind on these matters.

New Strip Search

Contracts. yuck.

It’s no secret that Tycho and I have a bad history when it comes to contracts. The most famous one is probably when we thought we were signing a deal with a company called EFront for hosting and advertising, but actually signed away all the rights to the comic strip. We also lost our book rights after signing an especially bad contract. We spent a lot of time and a lot of money getting ourselves out of those deals and now we have Robert our personal business asshole to make sure we never do it again.

The reality is that there are a lot of people who are more than happy to take advantage of artists and you need to be on your guard. This challenge had some funny moments in it and we tried to make it entertaining but it’s actually a super important lesson. I wish we had learned it when we were just starting out.

The Law Of The Jungle
Posted by News Fetcher on May 31 '13 at 10:00 AM
By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
My co-conspirator suggested that he had been up until midnight playing videogames, the way a young person might do, which was amusing to me because we were independently engaged in a similar (if not identical) enterprise.

It turns out that the perfect antidote to content-free angst regarding the precise dimensions of a next-generation console’s “rights shredder” peripheral is to play actual games on devices which are out and available. I know! Perhaps they’ll describe the precise contours of their dystopia at E3: the origin of the nutritive fluids we’ll absorb, or what will happen to those whose bodies reject the IMPERATOR implant. It might even be the same thing! But I’m finished for the time being with the void-worship, scrying pool ultrapopulism. That’s time I could be investing in banana acquisition.
As a very young boy, I had an Odyssey², an early American console that had a keyboard for some reason, which is why I suspect my mother tolerated such a thing in the house: it had, somewhere within itself, the possiblity of education. I had a Commodore, then an Amiga, so the consoles my friends owned were interesting but not a source of any true envy. I had Warlords II, for fuck’s sake. It’s like… man, get out of here.

Gabeart
Posted by News Fetcher on May 30 '13 at 09:00 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
Thursday is new Gabeart day. Watch me draw last Thursday’s comic strip:

You can see I had a really hard time with the third panel. Struggling with a drawing is one thing but doing it while a camera is watching is a bit more stressful. I think it’s interesting though and it let’s you see just how anal I am about expressions. You can’t see it in the video but behind the camera I’m acting out the comic and saying the lines over and over again trying to figure out the right face. Eventually I nailed it though and I got a lot of great compliments on that strip specifically calling out the third panel. So that made me feel pretty damn good.

In other art related news, here’s my sketch and the raw inks from the new Daughters art I posted yesterday.

DLC Update
Posted by News Fetcher on May 29 '13 at 11:45 AM
By Gabe from Penny Arcade:
We are nearing the finish line with our DLC podcast Kickstarter and we’ve added one final stretch goal to the mix. If we manage to crack the 200k mark we will deliver a podcast for a game session of Lost Lands. That’s right the tabletop RPG created by my 8yo son. He will GM a game for me and a few of my friends and we will record the entire thing for you.

I’ve played Lost Lands a few times now and it’s great. It’s goofy and ridiculous but also surprisingly cool in a few ways. That’s not just me being a Dad either. He ran his game for Scott a few weeks ago and after hearing the basic mechanics Scott turned to me and said “wow I might actually use that idea in my game.” It’s pretty amazing what kids can come up with when they don’t know what they are “supposed” to do. Needless to say I am incredibly proud.

The update to the Kickstarter includes a few other bits of info including the image for the poster that backers will receive.

Thanks to everyone who has supported us via the Kickstarter. It’s because of you guys that we can keep making stuff.

Marshfellow

By Tycho from Penny Arcade:
LEAGUE JUDGMENT: MARSHFELLOW, THE SWEET PRINCE

Candidate: Marshfellow Ser Pufflin
Date: 33 March, 24 CLE

OBSERVATION

As a mount, clouds make for slow travel. A cloudling, even slower. And Cirrus was a cloudling with ADHD. You do the math.
Every minute it seemed there was a fascinating lichen, or a new plant, or a rock - a fucking rock - that necessitated intense concentration until such time as it was forgotten absolutely in search of the next wholly useless stimuli. This is how Marshfellow Ser Pufflin came to arrive at the Institute of War almost twenty years after his departure from the Moistlands.
He thought of this as he thoughtfully knotted the cloudling’s mist-reins on the mountrod.
“Stay here, Cirrus,” His Deliciousness warbled, like a penguin encased in gelatin. “Where I go, I go alone.”

REFLECTION

Steel. And heat. And hot, white blood.

He felt himself squozen through the twin fallopias, pressure beyond measure, as his consciousness fired into the mold. It gave him eyes, to witness his making. It gave him arms, to gouge out the eyes. It gave him a mouth, to catalogue every moment of his terror.

In the midst of these horrors, a tiny cloud bobbed. The cloud was looking at nothing in particular, as hard as it could.
“Cirrus, for Fuck’s sake!” cried His Expansiveness. “I told you stay out-fucking-side!”

“You’re a marshmallow, man,” said Cirrus. “I mean, you’re a marshmallow-man.”
“That’s a machine that makes marshmallows, and it made you, and now you’re a marshmallow man. This is the least complicated, least majestic origin imaginable. You came out of a machine that makes an infinite number of dudes exactly like you. That’s what’s up.”
